A letter to the editor
I am writing on behalf of the elderly residents living at a retirement village in Pioneer Park, to raise serious concerns about the continued breakdown of the building's only elevator, which has been out of service for more than two months.
This situation has left many senior citizens, some in their 70s and 80s, essentially trapped in their apartments.
Climbing several flights of stairs to collect mail, attend medical appointments, or do grocery shopping is not just difficult, it's dangerous and, for some, nearly impossible.
We have been told by the caretaker that a vital part, needed for the elevator repair, must be imported from Germany.
However, no one has provided a clear timeline, and communication from the board of directors has been scarce.
We understand that maintenance issues take time, but this delay has gone on for far too long.
The physical and emotional toll on our elderly neighbours cannot be overstated.
Some now avoid leaving their flats altogether, fearful that they won't have the strength to climb back up.
One creative resident has even resorted to using a rope and crate system to help haul up groceries to the upper floors, something that should never be necessary in a retirement complex.
We are not trying to cause trouble. We are simply asking: How much longer must our senior citizens wait to be treated with the dignity and urgency they deserve?

Midrand SPCA hosts successful AGM, welcomes new member
The chairperson of the Midrand SPCA said they are thrilled to welcome a new member onto the management committee. Parts of Cape Town to face 10-hour power outage on Wednesday
The City of Cape Town electricity and generation teams will implement a 10-hour power outage to maintain essential electricity infrastructure in Athlone. The maintenance work will be carried out from 8:00 to 18:00 on Wednesday, 30 July, if all goes to plan, resulting in electricity supply interruptions. The City of Cape Town said it is important to note that interruptions to the electricity supply will only impact the highlighted area on the maps and only on the relevant date. Here's when you will receive your August 2025 SASSA grant
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed the grant payment dates for August 2025. The agency pays out old age grants, disability grants and child support grants. Other additional grants include the war veterans grant, the foster care grant, care dependency grant and the grant in aid. Here's when the SASSA payment grant dates will be for each grant: Old age grant- Tuesday, 5 August 2025. Disability grant- Wednesday, 6 August 2025 Child support grant- Thursday, 7 August 2025. SASSA has warned its beneficiaries about circulating fake news regarding a double grant payment in August 2025. The fake news claimed that SASSA will pay the grant on Monday, 12 August 2025, citing that the double payment was implemented to provide additional support to beneficiaries.
