Delhi Police bust fake Noida call centre, nab 8

Indian Express01-06-2025
The Delhi Police Friday busted a fake call centre operating from the basement of a Noida building and arrested eight people allegedly involved in a credit card scam. The police have also seized 24 mobile phones and a diary with a log of Rs 6.5 crore of defrauded transactions.
According to the police, the alleged fake call centre was being run by Vikas, 28, and Kundan Singh, 31, along with Divyam, 22, and five women – all of whom were arrested – for the last seven months.
'Upon sustained questioning, they disclosed that their telemarketers contacted individuals over the phone under the pretext of increasing their credit card limits, subsequently sending them a malicious link to collect their account details,' Sachin Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Outer, Delhi Police, said.
The case came to light on March 22, when a complainant approached the Cyber Police Station (Outer), claiming that he was defrauded of Rs 6,000 after he got a call from people claiming that they could boost his credit card limit.
'The fraud was committed under the pretext of increasing his credit card limit, during which the accused obtained sensitive card details and the OTP from the victim through malicious links and fraudulent phone calls,' DCP Sharma said.
After checking Internet Protocol Detail Records (IPDR), Call Detail Records (CDR), and IMEI searches of the phone number from which the complainant received a call, the police tracked the device to a building in Noida Sector-63.
'The location of the primary accused and the operational hub of the call centre was identified in the basement of Building D-60, Sector-63, Noida. A raid was subsequently conducted at the specified location,' said DCP Sharma.

Jobless UP man's IDs used for Rs 250cr multi-state GST fraud, 5 held from Raj

Meerut: UP Police's Special Task Force (STF) arrested five men from Barmer district in Rajasthan on Thursday for allegedly running a multi-state GST evasion racket by using a jobless Muzaffarnagar man's stolen identity to create over 100 shell firms registered in Delhi, Rajasthan, UP, etc. , but operated in Karnataka. The fake firms were used to issue fraudulent bills to real companies, helping them evade crores of rupees in taxes, the quantum of which is still being assessed. The trail began on Sept 3 last year in Muzaffarnagar, when GST officials found a firm named AK Traders allegedly involved in a Rs 248 crore tax fraud. It was registered under Ashwani Kumar, a jobless man from Barsu village, who had no knowledge of the firm. He told officials he had shared his PAN and Aadhaar numbers over a phone call after being told he was applying for a job. He had also paid Rs 1,760 as a registration fee. The matter was handed to UP STF after an initial investigation. STF found that AK Traders, registered as scrap and marble traders, had issued e-way bills to seven shell firms. These firms passed on fake bills to over 100 fictitious companies in different layers, which then routed them to genuine businesses in several states of South India to help them avoid GST. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo ASP (UP STF) Brijesh Kumar Singh said the five accused — Ratna Ram, Om Prakash, Hanuman Ram, Budhram, and Santosh Kumar — were residents of Barmer and knew Labhuram and Suresh, the two masterminds from the same region. "They would lure job seekers, take their ID documents, use them to issue SIM cards and register companies on the GST portal," Singh told TOI. He said the five had shifted to Bengaluru two years ago and followed orders from Labhuram and Suresh to issue e-way bills. "They got paid Rs 3,000 for each bill issued," Singh added. The scam operated by shutting down each fake firm within days to dodge detection. "Since there were no actual purchases or sales, the firms avoided depositing any GST. The layering of firms was designed to confuse investigators and obscure the money trail," Singh said. Each company seeking a fake bill transferred money to the bank account of a bogus firm run by the masterminds. After deducting a 10–20% cut, the rest of the money was returned to the client in cash or into a different account they named. Singh said, "None of the GST collected was ever deposited with the govt. The companies were closed soon after issuance of bills, leading to losses worth crores."

Cops crack 1.5cr land grab with Aadhaar fingerprints

T'puram: The fingerprints on Aadhaar cards and the mobile numbers linked to them helped trace the accused who snatched a property worth Rs 1.5 crore at Kowdiar by forging documents and impersonating the original owner. Police arrested Merin Jacob (27) of Puthu Parambil near Manacaud near Punalur and Vasantha (76) of Cheenivila Palakkad Veedu near Maruthoor at Karakulam. Vasantha posed as Dora Asariya Crips, the original owner of the land, and Merin as her step-daughter. Vasantha registered the property in Merin's name and she sold it for Rs 1.5 crore. The probe team, however, suspects the involvement of a larger network behind the crime as they feel two women alone cannot organise a crime of such magnitude. The accused forged all documents related to the land and Dora's identity card to snatch the land. The fraud came to light when a relative of Dora visited the village office to pay land tax and discovered that the land was sold and someone else was paying the tax. A case was registered soon and the police identified the property's new owner. He claimed he had bought the land by paying the money to Merin, who claimed to be Dora's step-daughter. The new owner also claimed that Dora was with Merin when the land was registered in his name. "When we examined the registration details at the sub-registrar office, we obtained the thumb impressions in the register and copies of the Aadhaar cards. The accused created two fake Aadhaar cards, in the names of Dora and Merin. However, the Aadhaar numbers in the cards belonged to the original Aadhaar cards of Vasantha and Merin, and the mobile numbers linked to the Aadhaar cards were also the same. The thumb impressions in the Aadhaars and the register at the sub-registrar office matched, and using the mobile number, police soon found the address of the accused. They were soon taken into custody, and arrests were recorded," said the probe team.
