Newport win Super Rygbi Cymru after beating Ebbw Vale 27-18
Tries by scrum-half Dafydd Buckland, impressive fly-half Jac Lloyd and full-back Carwyn Penny earned the spoils, and they were good value for it against a resilient, proud and determined Ebbw who kept fighting until the final whistle.
It was a fitting end to their anniversary year with the added sentiment of paying tribute to Brian Jones, 'Mr Newport', who died last month.
Added to the script, Black and Ambers hall of famers Elliot Frewen and Rhys Jenkins pulled on the famous jersey for the last time in this final.
It was Newport's day after they suffered Premiership final anguish 12 months earlier and Ebbw Vale will hope to follow their lead in 2026.
The Steelmen will be hurting after coming up short in a terrific campaign that featured 13 wins on home soil.
Newport's title triumph was a long time in the making and featured two near misses, so Jason Strange will urge Ebbw to just keep on building.

Both sides made a nervy start with Ebbw keen to make the most of the wind at their backs – at least it was initially on a sunny but blustery afternoon – as they attacked the clubhouse end.
The Steelmen were carrying hard and got reward for their early pressure when Evan Lloyd knocked over a penalty in the ninth minute.
The hosts tried to extend their lead through their trusty lineout drive but Newport held firm and forced an error from the resulting carries.
They got the reward for that when Jac Lloyd levelled from the tee in the 20th minute and the visitors then built up a head of steam.
Newport had lost flanker Kyle Tayler to an early injury and then Ebbw saw captain and hooker Joe Franchi limp off, a blow that was swiftly followed by the opening try in the 29th minute.
The Black and Ambers did a quick 'one-two' at the front of a lineout in the 22, hammered away and then scrum-half Dafydd Buckland spotted a gap and dotted down.
Lloyd converted but then, after a rapid attack from a quick tap, failed to judge the wind with a penalty and it remained 10-3 as half-time approached.

Ebbw's Lloyd got a long but central effort spot-on to make it 10-6 but Newport got a huge score with the final play of the half.
They worked space down the left and David Richards, with two strong carries, got them within inches.
Arguably they made hard work of it – and Ebbw must've been close to winning a penalty after trying to get over the ball – but eventually the fleet-footed Lloyd danced over and converted himself for a 17-6 lead.
Ebbw had turned around a 21-5 deficit against Llandovery in the semis and a huge line break by Ryan Jenkins got them hunting a response five minutes after the restart only for the attack to be ended by a knock on in the 22.
No bother, an almighty scrum earned them another crack and scrum-half Gruff Tough's cross-kick was gathered by Ewan Bowden for a try down the left that made it 17-11, with Evan Lloyd failing with the touchline conversion.
However, the Newport response was immediate with full-back Carwyn Penny gathering a boomed clearance, chipping over the top and then benefiting from a nasty bounce and hesitation to gather, just about stay up and dive over down the right.
Jac Lloyd's conversion was a peach and the visitors had stretched their lead to 24-11 with half an hour to go.
Yet back came Ebbw courtesy of a nightmare moment for wing Iestyn Galton, who tried to force an offload after being too casual in his 22.
The loose ball was snaffled by the hosts and lock Curtis Gregory went over from close range, Evan Lloyd making it a seven-pointer.
It was manic stuff and Newport were able to stretch a score clear on the hour through the boot of Jac Lloyd, 27-18 their lead.
The Black and Ambers thought they had their clincher when a hack ahead led to Jac Lloyd flicking the ball to Galton, who went under the sticks.
However, TMO footage – in play for the final – showed it had gone forward.
That was followed by shanked, ambitious long penalty effort by the Newport fly-half as it remained nip and tuck.
The clock was not Ebbw's friend and the Black and Ambers knew the importance of good discipline to keep the home side out of their 22 as the game entered the final 10 minutes.
However, a scrum penalty and then an offside led to the Steelmen having a shot at a five-metre lineout with 73 gone.
That led to influential lock Josh Skinner seeing yellow after the first attempt was illegally stopped, then ref Ben Breakspear gave another penalty that was sent to the corner.
Newport held up Ebbw over the line and dissent led to a penalty rather than a drop out.
The Steelmen kept coming but this, finally, was to be a black and amber afternoon.
Ebbw scorers: tries – Bowden, Gregory; conversion – E Lloyd; penalties – E Lloyd (2).
Newport scorers: tries – Buckland, J Lloyd, Penny; conversions – J Lloyd (3); penalties – J Lloyd (2).
Referee: Ben Breakspear (WRU).

Airdrie v Alloa: Diamonds boss will treat clash like cup final as side bid to top group
Airdrie and Alloa both have 100 per cent records ahead of today's Group C showdown Airdrie have put themselves into pole position to win Premier Sports Cup Group C – but boss Rhys McCabe says the now face a 'cup final' with Alloa today to top the table and reach the last 16. The Diamonds beat Premiership side Dundee 1-0 at Dens Park to open their group on July 12, and followed that up with a 3-0 win over Bonnyrigg Rose at New Broomfield and a 2-1 win at Montrose on Wednesday night. They now host Alloa today in a winner-takes-all clash. While that gives Airdrie a chance to qualify as group leaders and get a seeded draw in the next round, McCabe isn't taking anything for granted. 'It's a good opportunity, especially after the start we've had,' said McCabe. 'We've had good wins, good performances and clean sheets in there, so there are a lot of positives to build on – but we know we have to try to get the job done. 'Getting that first win against Dundee gives you the catalyst and the position that we're in, as a Championship club, you're looking strong. But you still have to go out and put those performances and results together. 'We've given ourselves a chance with a right positive start, but we're looking to continue that and not slack off. 'We've played different levels of opposition, we've been really strong defensively. There are loads of positives to build on, but we know the work is not finished.' Both Airdrie and Alloa have 100 per cent records and McCabe was full of praise for the Wasps ahead of their showdown. He said: 'Full credit to them for three really good results, and performances to go with that. It sets us up almost for a shoot-out. Hopefully we can go in on Saturday, get the job done, and top the group. 'It's a chance to go through seeded and win all the games in your group, so it becomes almost a final. That's the way I look at it. We're at home, we know the pitch, and we've got to make sure that we take the good elements of the last three games and tidy up on a few wee bits and bobs. We go into it at home with the full intent to win the game.'

Cliftonville Academy eager to put League struggles behind us in T20 Final clash with Instonians, says Jared Wilson
Wilson is player/coach of a side who have set aside their League struggles to be the surprise package of the shortest format, and go into the game with no fear. 'It's certainly been an interesting League campaign where we have lost a few games by small margins,' said Wilson. 'Against Instonians for example, I was on 95 as we were chasing 325 and there was a long delay looking for a lost ball and my concentration was broken, getting out the next ball. We lost that game by just 10 runs. 'There was another match where we also came out the wrong side of a tight contest versus Muckamore, and in that I and our overseas player Abhishek (Raut) got nought. 'If we had won both those then our season would have been on a different trajectory, and we would have been in the top six rather than in the bottom four. 'In the T20 campaign we have played some really good cricket and it's exciting to be in the Final. 'It's obviously going to be tough against Instonians who are flying in all competitions, but T20 cricket can be a bit of a leveller, making it a more even contest. 'They're full of confidence with the season they're having, but we have got a few wins recently that will help us in the Final. The South African born all-rounder came to Northern Ireland as a teenager, enjoying success with Ardmore and Newbuildings in the North-West, before switching to Cliftonville Academy where he started initially as a director of cricket, before moving to his current role. 'I came here to Ireland not really knowing anything about the place to be honest,' he said. 'I started at Ardmore where I really enjoyed it and we had a lot of success. I also captained Newbuildings to the Premiership and Faughan Valley Cup. 'We just missed out on the treble, beaten by Fox Lodge in the Senior Cup Final in one of the best games I've ever played in. 'The crowd, the pressure, the atmosphere. It was just an incredible occasion. 'I loved my time in the region, and still am based in Derry, along with my partner Shannon, and two sons Eden and Reuben who are aged four and two. 'It's a great place and the people are just so warm and funny. It was a bit of a change from Cape Town but six years later I'm still here and looking forward to the future.' He's relishing the opportunity to add more silverware to his collection, hoping an all-round team effort can topple the Shaw's Bridge side 'There's a massive buzz around the club ahead of the Final,' said the 25-year-old. 'It's certainly going to be one of the proudest days in the club's history and we have the players to achieve that. 'To win one of the biggest trophies in domestic cricket would be great for all at the club, and we will be trying hard to do that. 'We have a great opening partnership with Abhishek Raut, who has played in the IPL, and Frank Collins. They've laid the foundation with strong starts, and the middle-order has backed that up. 'We have a varied bowling attack with plenty of variety. Matthew McCord, John Glass, Ben Kane, Abhishek and myself have complemented each other well. 'We don't really have any superstars, but what we do have is a real team ethic. 'That's been the hallmark of our success in the T20's and If we all stick together and fire, there's no reason why we can't lift the trophy on Sunday.' The Final on Sunday is part of a double-header with Bangor meeting Cregagh in the T20 Trophy ahead of the main event (11.00am). There's also a busy League programme on Saturday with leaders Instonians hosting North Down, second-placed Waringstown travelling to Muckamore, and CIYMS at home to Lisburn. In the bottom four Templepatrick entertain CSNI, while Cliftonville Academy warm up for their big day with a home clash against Woodvale. In today's Premiership games, the top two meet at the Foyleview Arena with Newbuildings playing leaders Donemana in a dress rehearsal for next week's Senior Cup final. In the other games, Bready are home to Ardmore, Strabane host Coleraine, while Brigade entertain bottom side Eglinton. There are also three rearranged matches on Sunday with Strabane at home to Donemana, Newbuildings taking on Brigade and Bready meeting Eglinton.

Hearts are going through their final preparations for the new Premiership season - and that has included plenty of transfer work. Aided by Jamestown Analytics, a number of new head coach Derek McInnes' signings have made an immediate impression in the Premier Sports Cup, winning all four of their group stage games to book a last 16 slot. They face Sunderland in Craig Gordon's testimonial before turning attentions to the first game of the league campaign vs Aberdeen, with winger Sabah Kerjota the latest recruit. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad As business continues up and down the land, here are some of the latest Hearts transfer headlines, including Andrew McKinlay updates plus a club hero's future latest with Sheffield Wednesday. Hearts transfer priority CEO McKinlay has admitted that amid a raft of incomings, there will now be attentions turned to moving some players on from Hearts. He said to Hearts TV: 'I'm not going to go into names in that regard. That's very much one the manager's view on things, now he's had a chance to assess the squad. And there will unfortunately be some players that are just surplus to requirements, just based on a numbers game. 'So, we will hopefully move some players out before the end of the window. Whether we bring any more in will depend partly on what goes out. It's not that we're not looking, not monitoring, and we'll always be doing that. But I think we're all feeling pretty comfortable that if things stopped tomorrow and that was the end of the window, yes, we'd have too big a squad if it was tomorrow, but we'd be happy with what we've got from an in's perspective. 'We're all pretty positive about that and we'll continue to make changes window by window with the analytics and we would expect to see the squad get better each window as we come through it.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Impressive Hearts transfer business McKinlay has also been left impressed by the business Hearts have conducted so far this summer, with more on the way. He said: 'We did use the analytics in January, but this has been the first summer window that we've used it and it's been great. It's been fascinating. I think it's fair to say, I hope this is the view of the fans, but some of the players that we've brought in so far have, they've hit the ground running. Some real excitement among some of these players. You can tell we're going to play in a different way. 'What we haven't had yet is the new width on the right that we've now got Kerjota in and I think as everyone knows, we're hoping to get Kabore sorted over the line as well. And so it's been brilliant.' Hearts hero's Sheffield Wednesday contract update Meanwhile, Callum Paterson is set to appear for Sheffield Wednesday in a friendly as uncertainty surrounds his future. The versatile fan favourite who played for Hearts between 2012-2017 is out of contract amid off the field issues at the Owls, but The Star claim Patterson is still with Sheffield Wednesday who want to sign him again after spending since 2020 at Hillsborough. Reporting states: 'Free agent former Sheffield Wednesday man Callum Paterson will step out in Owls colours in a behind-closed-doors friendly clash this weekend amid hopes a deal can be reached for him to re-sign for the club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Wednesday are operating under the terms of restrictions on what deals can be offered and struck and it is hoped that Paterson, who has 31 goals and 15 assists in his 186-appearance Owls career to date, will be able to formally re-join the squad after a period back training with the squad. Wednesday confirmed the 30-year-old would feature in a private run-out against League One Mansfield Town at Middlewood Road on Saturday.'
