Telangana Governor flags off eco-friendly livelihood initiative for tribal communities in Telangana
This initiative, funded through the Governor's Discretionary Grants, aims to support the livelihoods of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PvTGs).
The flag-off ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad on Saturday, a Raj Bhavan communique said.
Following the event, the Governor interacted with young members of PvTG communities, including those undergoing training in leaf plate production and as nature guides. These efforts are part of a broader mission to enhance sustainable livelihood opportunities for indigenous populations.
A group of 32 local youth, primarily from the Chenchu community—known for their deep-rooted connection with the forest—have been trained as nature guides at The Naturalist School in Bengaluru. With ₹15 lakh in support from the Hon'ble Governor allocated for the Nagarkurnool district, the program is designed to help these youth gain meaningful employment while enabling tourists to experience the Nallamala forest's cultural richness and biodiversity.
In his address, the Governor highlighted the cultural importance of tribal communities, describing them as the original guardians of nature. He reiterated his commitment to improving their quality of life through focused and inclusive development initiatives. He remarked that Adivasis live beyond the boundaries of caste, creed, or religion, and that their lives are deeply intertwined with nature and guided by time-honoured traditions. Living with simplicity and minimal needs, they derive contentment not from material wealth, but from their harmonious relationship with the natural world.
Commending the enthusiasm and potential of tribal youth, the Governor stated, 'These are not favours, these are your rights. This is your time,' encouraging them to seize emerging opportunities for growth and empowerment.
The event was attended by several senior officials, including M. Dana Kishore,Principal Secretary to the Governor; Dr G. Narendra Kumar, Director General, NIRDPR; Dr A. Sharat, Secretary, Tribal Welfare; Badavath Santhosh, Collector of Nagarkurnool; Rohit Gopidi, Project Officer, ITDA (Chenchus); and Dr A Ramulu, CEO, Indian Red Cross Society (Telangana). Representatives from Leaf Plate Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Raj Bhavan, and Red Cross district units from Nagarkurnool, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Adilabad were also present.

Indian Navy rescues 14 crew members from burning vessel in North Arabian Sea
New Delhi, July 1 (UNI) Demonstrating rapid operational readiness and unwavering commitment to seafarer safety, the Indian Navy rescued 14 Indian crew members onboard the Palau-flagged tanker MT Yi Cheng 6 in the North Arabian Sea. In the early hours of June 29, INS Tabar, which was on a mission-based deployment, received a Mayday distress call from MT Yi Cheng 6. The vessel reported a major fire outbreak in its engine room while operating approximately 80 nautical miles east of Fujairah, UAE, an Indian Navy statement said today. Responding swiftly, INS Tabar proceeded at maximum speed and reached the vicinity of the distressed tanker. Upon arrival, the naval team established communication with the vessel's Master and immediately commenced firefighting operations. Prioritising crew safety, seven crew members were promptly evacuated to INS Tabar using the ship's boats. All evacuated personnel were unharmed and received medical evaluations from Tabar's onboard medical team. The remaining crew, including the Master, stayed aboard the vessel to assist with fire containment efforts. INS Tabar deployed a six-member firefighting and damage control team with firefighting equipment. Their initial efforts, in coordination with the ship's crew, significantly reduced the intensity of the fire, which was successfully contained within the engine room. To strengthen the ongoing operation, 13 additional Indian Navy personnel-- five officers and eight sailors-- were deployed to support the firefighting mission. Sustained efforts by Indian Navy's firefighting team along with crew members have successfully brought the fire under control. Temperature checks and continuous monitoring are being conducted to ensure safety, while INS Tabar remains on station to provide continued support. The courageous and timely action by the Indian Navy not only ensured the safety of the vessel and its crew but also reinforced India's role as the first responder in the Indian Ocean Region. QUAD nations launch sea observer mission to boost maritime cooperation
New Delhi, June 30 (UNI) To strengthen maritime security and interoperability in the Indo-Pacific, the Coast Guards of India, Japan, the United States and Australia have launched the first-ever 'QUAD at Sea Ship Observer Mission' under the Wilmington Declaration. Two officers, including women officers from each country have embarked on board US Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Stratton, which is currently sailing to Guam, a Defence Ministry statement said. The cross-embarkation mission marks an unprecedented step in QUAD Coast Guard collaboration, enhancing joint readiness, operational coordination, and domain awareness in support of a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific. The mission reflects the vision laid out at the QUAD Leaders' Summit in September 2024 and signifies a deepening of operational ties between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Japan Coast Guard (JCG), US Coast Guard (USCG), and Australian Border Force (ABF). The QUAD at Sea initiative thus sets the foundation for a 'QUAD Coast Guard Handshake,' fostering stronger trust, coordination, and collective resilience amid evolving maritime challenges in the region. APEPDCL to provide electricity to 23000 PVTG tribal households under PM Janajati Adivasi Trijan Nyaya Maha Abhiyan
Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 30 (ANI): The Government of India is providing free electricity connections to houses without electricity through the Pradhan Mantri Janajati Adivasi Trijan Nyaya Maha Abhiyan, whose aim is to provide infrastructure to PVTG tribal settlements living in remote areas, a press release from APEPDCL said. For this scheme, officials from Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) have identified 23,000 PVTG houses without electricity in tribal villages and settlements under its jurisdiction. As part of the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Man Yojana program, the company officials have taken action on a war footing to provide electricity to remote areas under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. The electricity staff worked hard to transport the electricity poles, transformers, conductors and other equipment required to establish the electricity network to remote tribal areas that lack roads and transportation facilities. APEPDCL CMD Prithviraj Imadi would regularly hold special meetings at the electricity substations and provide necessary instructions to the staff, and would also personally visit the tribal villages to inspect the electricity meters installed free of charge for tribal households. Although establishing a network for tribal villages was challenging, the electricity staff, through their collective efforts, provided free electricity connections to more than 22,000 houses in a remarkably short period, bringing electricity to the tribal settlements. While the government's goal is to provide electricity to every household, some tribal villages located in the hills have not been connected to electricity lines. Some tribal families who engaged in shifting cultivation and periodically changed their residences on the hills were provided with five solar-powered LED bulbs, a fan, a charging point, two switchboards, and a solar plant stand. Each family was provided with electricity by providing a free package worth Rs. 50,000. To celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, village assemblies were organised for the PVTG villages that had completed electrification under the APEPDCL area. The company officials certified that all tribal houses in the respective gram panchayat had been electrified, and certificates were given to the village sarpanches who had cooperated in this effort. As of May 17, 23,024 out of 23,087 households without electricity have been connected to the power grid. Through RDSS, 15,102 out of 15,475 households have been supplied with electricity at Rs 48 crores. Through DAJGUA, 487 out of 3,745 families have been provided with electricity, amounting to Rs14.23 crores as of May 17. As part of the Government of India's PM Janman Scheme, electrification and housing are being provided to particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs), especially those in remote and migratory habitations with less than five households. Around 1,000 such tribal households have been identified. To address their unique needs, electrification is being implemented in three ways: Individual Solar Home Lighting Systems (SHLS) - Portable kits with solar panels, batteries, lights, and fans for migratory use. Solar mini-grids - For small, isolated communities, particularly those located on hilltops. Solar-Wind Hybrid Mini-Grids - For areas with mixed renewable potential. These efforts are primarily focused on the APEPDCL jurisdiction, which covers the tribal belts from Srikakulam to the Alluri Sitharama Raju districts. About 70% of the 14,312 genuine applicants of the PM Surya Ghar (PMSG) scheme under the Visakhapatnam-based Eastern Power Distribution Company of A.P. Limited (APEPDCL) are generating electricity on their rooftops. Solar Rooftop Photovoltaic (SRTPV) systems have been installed on the roofs of 11 districts under the North Coastal Andhra Power Distribution Company (Discom). (ANI)
