50 ft high mandap collapses; one dead, 16 injured
The incident occurred in the coastal town's Chowpatty Mela Ground where the structure was erected for the Ramdevpir event which witnesses massive influx of people from across Saurashtra region.
The deceased, identified as Vanraj GoranIya, was one of the volunteers and he reportedly held one of the ropes of the nearly 50-55 ft high mandap when it started tilting to one side. As the structure gave way, Vanraj was dragged down and struck on the head by a blunt object, causing fatal injuries.
Vanraj succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
The 16 injured include 12 women but the wounds were not serious, said police.
Thousands of people had gathered at the ground when the incident occurred.
Rajesh Kanmiya, inspector of Kamla Baug police station, told TOI that the incident occurred during the 24-hour-long Ramdevpir Mandap Utsav, which began on Tuesday evening. Around 170 police personnel had been deployed for round-the-clock duty throughout the religious gathering.

Another female elephant ‘electrocuted' in state
Bhubaneswar: A nine-year-old female elephant was allegedly electrocuted in Dhenkanal district on Monday, marking the second such death in the state within 24 hours. The carcass was discovered on a private tick tree farm in Khajuriakata section under Hindol forest range. "Initial investigation suggests the elephant was electrocuted by a 240-volt wire," said Dhenkanal DFO Sumit Kar. The property owner has been detained for questioning. Forest officials conducted a post-mortem on Monday morning, with samples sent to the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) for detailed analysis. "While we await OUAT's confirmation on the exact cause of death, preliminary findings indicate electrocution," Kar told TOI. The electricity department has been informed about the incident and has filed a separate case under the Electricity Act. An 11-year-old female elephant was electrocuted in Naktideul area of Sambalpur district early on Sunday.

Eight terror suspects to plead guilty in Bengaluru prison plot case
Bengaluru: Eight defendants in the Bengaluru prison terror conspiracy case, including T Naseer with alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) links, have expressed their intention to plead guilty before a special court hearing National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases. The accused, currently in judicial custody at Bengaluru Central Prison, were arrested in 2023 for allegedly radicalising fellow inmates and promoting terror-related activities while in jail between 2017 and 2023. Prime suspect T Naseer, who was an undertrial in connection with the 2008 Bengaluru serial blast case, led the alleged terror activities, police said. The case is currently being probed by NIA. The third accused, Fathima, was arrested for allegedly providing monetary help and other assistance to the inmates. "Fathima was rushed to hospital Sunday after claiming to have consumed toilet cleaner. Doctors washed her stomach and found no traces of the cleaner. However, there were some traces of the toilet cleaner in her mouth," sources said.

Bank officer held for 27L fraud
Lucknow: The economic offences wing (EOW) of the UP Police on Monday arrested Chheda Lal Anuragi, former bank officer, accused of orchestrating Rs 27 lakh fraud by opening fake accounts in collusion with bank staff and others. He was arrested in Agra where he was posted as branch manager at Indian Bank, Holipura. EOW said that the case dates back to 2006, when Anuragi served as retail banking officer at the Allahabad Bank branch in Atarra, Banda. He along with other officials allegedly opened two fraudulent accounts using forged documents and IDs. Similar fake accounts were opened in Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Central Bank of India and Bank of Baroda. Using these fake accounts, chequebooks were issued and account payee cheques were deposited at Allahabad Bank's Atarra branch. Courier stafffalsely cleared these cheques, allowing payment of large sums. Investigations revealed that the original accounts held only nominal balances (as little as Rs 1,000–2,000), yet multiple high-value cheques were cleared.
