Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up ▪ Speaking of the schedule release, is there a chance Advertisement Last season, just 3 of the 10 teams playing on Christmas were from the Eastern Conference. And the injuries to Tatum, Indiana's Tyrese Haliburton, and Milwaukee's Damian Lillard have widened the gap between the two conferences this summer. Advertisement The Lakers, Warriors, Knicks, Thunder, and Rockets figure to be locks to play on Christmas, with the Nuggets and Timberwolves not far behind. The Cavaliers won 64 games and are returning most of their key pieces. That would leave two more spots. The NBA will probably have to choose whether it wants to highlight a rising team such as the Magic or stick with a weakened Celtics squad with rich tradition and a strong run of recent success. Related : ▪ According to league sources, everything is pushing forward as planned ▪ Longtime Celtics assistant Matt Reynolds has been picked to coach Boston's summer league team. Reynolds joined the Celtics as an intern in 2013 and worked in the video department for about five years before becoming a special assistant to the head coach for three. He was officially named an assistant coach in 2022 and has turned into one of head coach Joe Mazzulla's most trusted confidants. During games, Reynolds is usually tasked with deciding whether to challenge a call. ▪ Mazzulla is constantly seeking ways to improve, and based on a hint from president of basketball operations Brad Stevens, it's clear that this pursuit has not been scaled back this summer. 'I know Joe has already traveled the world to meet with people and talk about some [coaching philosophies],' Stevens said. 'I think he was excited to do that. He's actually at a conference tonight talking about leadership. He's always trying to learn and grow. I believe wholeheartedly in him and our staff figuring out how to best maximize our team.' 'Still player-ref relationship, yeah.' ▪ ▪ Former Celtics forward Guerschon Yabusele appears to be back in the NBA for good. Yabusele parlayed Yabusele was just 20 when Advertisement ▪ The NBA is inching closer to empowering players to firing up deep end-of-quarter shots without worrying about misses denting their field-goal percentage. During summer league, missed 'heaves' will be recorded as team attempts only. To be considered a heave, the play must originate in the backcourt and come in the final three seconds of the final three periods, at a minimum distance of about 36 feet. NBA Twitter reacts to VJ Edgecombe's Sixers summer league debut
The Philadelphia 76ers began summer league on Saturday night when they took on the Utah Jazz in the Salt Lake City version. It was the first of three games the Sixers will play in Utah before heading out to Las Vegas on July 10. The Sixers took a tough 93-89 loss to the Jazz, but they have to be encouraged by the play of rookie guard VJ Edgecombe. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft showed off everything in his game as he scored 28 points with 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. He showed off his athleticism and made a few plays that showed off a surprising savviness for a player so young. Advertisement Also, Edgecombe won the individual battle with No. 5 overall pick, Ace Bailey who had eight points on 3-for-13 shooting with seven rebounds. "You don't golf, you play video games" - Gilbert Arenas thinks LeBron was trying to send a message playing golf in Cleveland
"You don't golf, you play video games" - Gilbert Arenas thinks LeBron was trying to send a message playing golf in Cleveland originally appeared on Basketball Network. LeBron James refuted rumors that he is plotting another comeback in Cleveland after he was seen golfing in Ohio with a "Welcome home" cap and visiting the Cavaliers' practice facility. However, one person who is not convinced about LeBron's denial is Gilbert Arenas, who said it's fishy that James hasn't said anything since the start of free agency, and then he shows up in Cleveland playing golf with a "Welcome Home" cap. "Hmm… It's been very, very quiet on these free agent streets, and you wanna show up, pop out in Ohio at a golf course with the 'Welcome Home' hat on," wondered Gil. "One, nobody golfs in Ohio, okay? Yeah, you only got one golf course in the top two hundred. Ain't nobody going there, okay? Two, we seen your swing. Ni—a, you don't golf, okay? That's not what you do. You play video games. Yeah, you Madden. Yeah, you like Madden and Call of Duty. So, you don't need to be on the golf course right about now in Ohio talking about Welcome Home," he added. "What's the plan, ni—a? Yeah. Huh? I got the checks. I don't got the plan. Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you think you're about to just leave us with the team we got, ni—a, you fool, okay?" James recently opted in to his $52.6 million player option to return to the Los Angeles Lakers next season. Still, shortly after that, his super agent, Rich Paul, talked to the media about his client wanting to compete for another NBA title and being unsure whether the Purple & Gold can build a championship-caliber roster this summer. The Klutch Sports founder's statement fueled speculations that LeBron might be trying to force his way out of Los Angeles. Among the teams immediately linked to him was, of course, his hometown Cavaliers, who were the second-best regular-season team in the NBA last season but could not advance past the second round of the playoffs. It's unclear whether Dan Gilbert and the Cavs are interested in the 40-year-old star. However, some experts believe that if the Cavaliers can pull off a Bron trade, he would be the veteran presence who could take them to the next James said, there is no truth to that rumor, and he goes to his hometown every summer and trains at the Cavs' facility while there. Arenas seemed unconvinced, although he sounded half-joking. Agent Zero threatened to kidnap Bronny if Bron doesn't return to L.A. "We got your son. Yeah, Bronny James ain't going nowhere, huh? Yeah, you ain't leaving your family, huh? You think you're the only one that got a plan around here, nigga? I got my mask on, boy. Hey, I'm showing up to Vegas right now. Huh? Operation: Hold Barney hostage until that ni—a come home," Arenas continued. LeBron Jr. is expected to play in the Las Vegas Summer League, which begins on July 10th. The Purple & Gold are currently in San Francisco for the California Classic, but Bronny did not play in the Lakers' Saturday game against the Golden State Warriors. He could, however, suit up for their Sunday matchup against the Miami story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 6, 2025, where it first appeared.
