Lithium Extraction Method: Old batteries in India will now play a pivotal role in meeting the country's lithium needs. In a major development, the scientists at the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) in Gujarat's Bhavanipur have reportedly discovered a new method to extract lithium from old batteries. Lithium is called 'white gold' because it is essential for mobile phones, laptops, and electric vehicles. 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' Mission to Get a Boost
The discovery by the scientists from CSMCRI promises to strengthen India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) mission and help extract lithium without harming the environment. It is important to note that currently India is totally dependent on imports to meet its lithium requirements.
As per the Times of India report, the latest technology could significantly reduce import costs. The discovery has been published in a major journal of the German Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie International Edition. Scientists say this technology will accelerate India's progress toward green energy. How Is Lithium Extracted from Old Batteries?
The process to extract lithium from old batteries is not easy. It takes 28 tons of battery waste to obtain just one ton of lithium. The existing methods are slow, expensive, and less effective. These processes usually involve extracting metals like nickel, cobalt, and manganese first, which reduces the quality of lithium and results in significant wastage.
Due to this, battery manufacturers are not very interested in sourcing lithium from old batteries. Moreover, traditional methods also harm the environment, making the battery waste business less profitable. The new technology discovered by the scientists will extract lithium first and in its purest form. After recovering black powder from old lithium-ion batteries, lithium is separated using anthraquinone salt and hydrogen peroxide. New Technology to Benefit Electric Vehicles If implemented on a large scale, the technology could greatly benefit battery waste handlers.
They will get better prices, and the environment will be spared from harm.
This is a major step for India as it moves toward becoming self-reliant in the field of electric vehicles and green energy.
This discovery will not only reduce India's import costs but also turn old batteries into a valuable resource.

Assam leads digital leap: NRL inks agreement with BSNL to host India's 1st 5G captive network

1 2 Guwahati: In a landmark move for India's digital infrastructure transforming core industries through next-generation connectivity, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in Golaghat district has signed an agreement with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to deploy the country's first 5G captive non-public network (CNPN) in the industrial sector. The agreement was formalised during a workshop organized by the union finance ministry here, setting the stage for a new era of industrial digitisation in Assam and beyond. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X hailed the development as a proud moment for the state and "A big leap for #DigitalAssam & #AtmanirbharBharat—ushering IoT, AR/VR, Big Data into our industrial future." A 5G CNPN is a private 5G network built by an organisation for its own exclusive use, separate from public telecom networks. The deployment of the CNPN will enable secure, ultra-reliable, and high-speed connectivity within the refinery premises, allowing NRL to integrate cutting-edge technologies. BSNL chairman cum managing director Robert J Ravi said the partnership exemplifies the telco's commitment to empowering India's strategic sectors with next-generation digital infrastructure. "The deployment of a dedicated 5G CNPN at NRL will mark a technological leap forward — not only in connectivity but in redefining how core industries can operate in the future. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Prices May Surprise You) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo As a trusted public telecom provider, BSNL is proud to pioneer this journey toward a self-reliant, digitally intelligent Bharat," he added. An official of the NRL said the integration of 5G CNPN will not only enhance operational efficiency and cybersecurity but also enable transformative technologies such as AR and VR-based training, digital twins, and real-time IoT applications. Model for Replication The deployment is expected to serve as a replicable model for other industrial sectors across India. The initiative aligns with govt's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and supports digital transformation of India's manufacturing and energy sectors.
