Numaligarh Refinery Limited
(NRL) in Golaghat district has signed an agreement with
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited
(BSNL) to deploy the country's first 5G captive non-public network (CNPN) in the industrial sector.
The agreement was formalised during a workshop organized by the union finance ministry here, setting the stage for a new era of industrial digitisation in Assam and beyond.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X hailed the development as a proud moment for the state and "A big leap for #DigitalAssam & #AtmanirbharBharat—ushering IoT, AR/VR, Big Data into our industrial future."
A 5G CNPN is a private 5G network built by an organisation for its own exclusive use, separate from public telecom networks.
The deployment of the CNPN will enable secure, ultra-reliable, and high-speed connectivity within the refinery premises, allowing NRL to integrate cutting-edge technologies.
BSNL chairman cum managing director Robert J Ravi said the partnership exemplifies the telco's commitment to empowering India's strategic sectors with next-generation digital infrastructure.
"The deployment of a dedicated 5G CNPN at NRL will mark a technological leap forward — not only in connectivity but in redefining how core industries can operate in the future.

Officials told to speed-up land acquisition for Polavaram R&R, NH projects
District Collector K. Vetriselvi on Tuesday directed officials to speed up land acquisition works related to the Polavaram Project's R&R packages, national highways, and YSR Jagananna Saswatha Bhoohakku Mariyu Bhooraksha (YSR–JBM) survey units, and also ensure smooth clearance for 4G mobile towers of Airtel, Jio, and BSNL without inconveniencing the public. In a video conference held on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), the Collector reviewed the progress of land acquisition, R&R colony constructions, and 4G tower permissions with mandal and revenue officials. Highlighting the urgency of land needs for Polavaram-related R&R packages, the Collector said that around 5,000 acres are required in the district. While 800 acres have already been identified in Buttayagudem and Jeelugumilli mandals, another 600 acres have recently been marked. She instructed officials to complete the remaining land acquisition by August 15. She emphasised that Gram Sabhas must be held in all concerned villages after identifying land parcels. Officials, including RDOs and DSPs, should participate and engage with farmers transparently during these public hearings. The compensation must be paid strictly as per government norms, and the process should be voluntary and farmer-friendly, she said. The Collector also instructed that targets under the YSR–JBM survey units must be met, and land for national highway development must be handed over quickly. Regarding 4G tower installations, permissions should be granted only after field-level inspection, ensuring minimum public inconvenience and adequate distance from residential areas. Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy, ITDA PO Apurva Bharat, Special Collector S. Sarala Vandana, DRO V. Vishweshwara Rao, and other mandal-level officials joined the review virtually.

New Delhi: The Indian Army is working relentlessly to enhance the range of rocket systems under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) initiative. It is important to note that the Indian Army relied on Russian-made multi-barrel rocket launchers like the Grad and Smerch for warfare until now, but with the induction of the indigenous multi-barrel rocket launcher Pinaka, the Army's capabilities have seen a significant boost. Now, with the enhancement of its strike range, a new version of Pinaka has been developed. The extended-range version of Pinaka has successfully completed its user trials—the final step before being inducted into the Army. It is expected to be inducted soon. Here are some of the key features of Pinaka: Pinaka currently in service with the Indian Army's artillery The original Pinaka rocket is a free-flight rocket, meaning once it is launched, it travels up to its maximum range of 37 kilometers before impact. The current Pinaka rockets in the Army have a range of 37 kilometers, which has now been extended to around 75 kilometers. The extended range guided Pinaka is a guided rocket equipped with GPS navigation. The rocket can strike the target with precision after launch. In terms of accuracy, it can hit within approximately 25 meters of the target, which is considered highly effective. The rocket is pre-programmed, and once launched, it follows the set trajectory. If it deviates from its path for any reason, the onboard computer, aided by GPS, corrects the trajectory to get it back on course. Pinaka is equipped with an Inertial Navigation System (INS). This provides a major advantage: even if an enemy attempts to breach or disrupt the GPS signal via satellite interference, the INS will still guide the rocket accurately to its target. Pinaka system, when an entire battery is launched simultaneously, it can completely devastate an area measuring 1,000 by 800 meters. With the induction of the guided Pinaka weapon system, the Indian Army will gain a highly destructive and precise artillery system capable of wreaking havoc on enemy forces. The Indian Army plans to have a total of 25 Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers. A single battery of the Pinaka system consists of six firing units (launchers). Each launcher has 12 tubes, meaning one full battery can fire 72 rockets in total. All of these can be launched within just 44 seconds. Immediately after launching, the launchers change position and can be rearmed for another strike. The Army procured two new types of rockets for the Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS): Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type-1 (DPICM) High-Explosive Pre-Fragmented (HEPF) Mk-1 (Enhanced) rockets.
