Celebrated jazz musician Madala Kunene was honoured at this year's Ugu Jazz Festival in Gamalakhe on Saturday.
The festival made a return after a five-year break with renowned stars including Zonke Dikana, Mondli Ngcobo, Amu Faku, DJ Bruce and DJ Happy Girl on the stage.
Madala, who was on a break due to health reasons, took to the stage to perform on the night and was handed a lifetime achievement award and a R50,000 cheque by the KwaZulu-Natal sport, arts and culture department.
'I've been honoured in the past, but this is the first time the award comes with a cash prize. I thank the organisers and the KZN government,' said Madala.
'As we close Youth Month, I'd like to plead with the youth to respect their elders and with men never to abuse women.'
More than 2,000 fans attended the relaunch of one of the South Coast's signature events on the entertainment calendar.
Event organiser Siyabonga Msomi of Coolsound Trading thanked fans for a successful event.
'We had expected a low turnout given the short time we had to put everything together and because it was a relaunch. It shows that people had been patiently waiting for the festival's revival. The real work begins now. We will take the feedback we've received and use it to prepare for 2026.'

‘F1: The Movie' races to $140m in opening weekend

F1: The Movie raced to the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend, earning more than $140m (R2,478,397,222) globally. That includes $55.6m (R984,000,000) in the US, with $25m (R619,552,500) of that coming on the movie's opening day on Friday, according to The Numbers. The movie, which stars Brad Pitt and was executive-produced by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, was filmed at F1 racetracks through the 2024 season. Pitt plays an F1 driver who comes out of retirement to help a struggling team while mentoring an up-and-coming young driver. According to Forbes, F1: The Movie outpaced Napoleon ($78.8m or R1,394,878,200 in 2023) for the biggest opening weekend for an Apple Studios film. However, with the cost of making F1: The Movie reportedly topping $350m (R6,195,455,000), it will need a continued run of success at the box office to make money.

Umhlanga actress inspires youth to be the change

Umhlanga actress inspires youth to be the change 'The Changemakers is a non-profit organisation that I started a year ago. It's dedicated to helping people and inspiring others to do the same. I wanted to do my part to bring about real change in our country,' said Sukuram. Sukuram holds a BCom in accounting but her heart has always belonged to the arts, particularly acting. 'I've loved acting since I was a little girl. It allows people to explore different characters and stories, and connect on a deeper level.' While she's made strides in her acting career, becoming the first South African actress to appear in multiple Zee TV series, it's her work with The Changemakers that speaks volumes about her commitment to social justice. 'We partnered with EnviroSpecSA to visit schools and teach girls self-defence. Self-defence is a vital skill as it empowers girls to protect themselves and gives them confidence.' Balancing a career in entertainment with activism isn't easy, but Sukuram said time management and passion keep her grounded. 'I create a calendar that accommodates both my acting and NPO responsibilities. I prioritise what matters most, whether it's preparing for a role or planning our next outreach.' Youth Month, she said, is a powerful reminder of what young South Africans are capable of. 'To me, Youth Month acknowledges the important role we play in shaping the future. It's about recognising our potential and giving us the tools to lead.' She encourages other young people to speak up and take action in their communities. Watch: Gen Z shares what Youth Day means to them 30 years into democracy 'Use your voice. Use your talents. Whether it's art, music, or leadership, your passion can create change.' Through The Changemakers, Sukuram hopes to continue addressing a range of issues, from GBV to education, and dreams of one day helping thousands of South Africans. She wants it to be an organisation that's known for getting things done, for being effective and impactful. 'You as the youth of South Africa are the leaders and changemakers of tomorrow. Keep pushing boundaries, breaking barriers, and striving for greatness. Don't wait for change, be the change.'
