Steelers insider gives subtle update on T.J. Watt extension, fines
The possibility of T.J. Watt potentially receiving fines had some fans confused — and Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo broke down what's in store for the contract situation.
During Tuesday's Steelers chat on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a fan sought clarification on whether the Steelers could actually waive Watt's over $100k in fines for missing mandatory minicamp — and this was Fittipaldo's confident response:
"Yes they can and will in Watt's case once he does sign."
The biggest takeaway is certainly the language in his answer — that the Steelers "will" waive Watt's fines — which makes sense, as it's a drop in the bucket compared to the likely $40 million per year he's seeking.
Fittipaldo also explained in a separate answer that the contract negotiations were "fairly quiet" and could carry into "next month," but it remains to be seen if Watt will continue his holdout into July's training camp if a deal still hasn't been reached.
