Punjab govt implementing several eco-friendly initiatives
LAHORE: The Punjab government is implementing several eco-friendly initiatives in the current calendar year including large-scale tree plantation drives, the establishment of a Climate Observatory and the promotion of electric vehicles and green technologies.
The government is also focusing on reducing pollution through measures like banning plastic bags below 75 microns and implementing an anti-smog plan, sources said.
The Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said, 'Large-scale tree plantation and environmental projects are being launched under Punjab Green Programme. We have a comprehensive plan to plant 42 million trees on 50,869 acres under Chief Minister Plant for Pakistan Initiative. About 1.375 million trees are being planted on 3,790 acres of forest wasteland under CM Agroforestry Initiative.'
The chief minister said, 'Scope of Green Pakistan Programme has been expanded, plantation of 466.463 million trees on 251,000 acres continues. Plantation of 5 million trees in rows on 10,223 avenue miles in canal area of Punjab has been activated.'
She said, 'Provision of world-class facilities for the promotion of eco-tourism in Lal Suhanra National Park and Salt Range are being ensured.'
The CM said, 'Wireless network, digital cameras, GPS devices and CCTV cameras are being provided for eco-tourism. Construction of an eco-friendly LEED certified multi-storey building has been started to establish a protected nature area, modern facilities have been provided for the staff.'
She flagged, 'Shielding Summits Programme for disaster prevention in the mountains of Murree and Kahuta, recruitment of 600 fire watchers, provision of fire vehicles and watch towers are being ensured.'
The chief minister said, 'Restoration of forest tracks and construction of tanks for spring water are also part of the project. Modern GIS-based protection system has been introduced, immediate detection of fire and encroachment is possible with drone, satellite and LIDAR technology.'
Maryam Nawaz Sharif said, 'Digital communication cell has been established, modern monitoring equipment and additional staff are being provided to the Monitoring and Evaluation Wing of the Forest Department. Digital tree enumeration in the form of rows and GIS-based survey have been started in Punjab.'
The chief minister said, 'Modern machinery has been purchased for forestry work, the process of plantation and forestry operations has been accelerated. Establishment of 104 Forest Command & Control Centers for 24-hour monitoring across the province is significantly increasing the capacity for forest protection.'

Labourers' kids offered free higher education
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that children of workers will be admitted to seven campuses of the COMSATS University and the Punjab government will pay their fees. The Punjab Workers Welfare Fund has invited applications under the initiative for free education for the children of industrial and mine workers. The chief minister said, "Doors of higher educational institutions are being opened for the children of every worker in Punjab. No child in Punjab will be deprived of education now." Children of disabled and deceased workers will also be provided free education at the university. The CM was informed that registered workers could submit applications by July 9 at the Islamabad campus, July 17 in Lahore, July 4 in Wah Cantt and Abbottabad, July 11 in Vehari and Attock and August 15 in Sahiwal. Bonus announced for sanitation workers

PHOTO: EXPRESS/FILE Following the collection of nearly 89,000 tonnes of animal waste across Lahore division on the Eid days, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a Rs10,000 bonus for each sanitation worker involved. "This year's Eid operation set new standards. Despite the intense summer heat, workers across cities and villages maintained exemplary cleanliness. I deeply appreciate their dedication and service," the chief minister stated. Lahore Division Commissioner Zaid bin Maqsood reported that the employees in the city had removed 54,888 tonnes of sacrificial waste. The division-wide total reached 88,927 tonnes. The commissioner conducted inspections at key locations, including Harbanspura, Canal Road, Shad Bagh, Amir Road, China Scheme and Lakhodair. He reviewed the road cleaning, visited central and temporary dumping sites and monitored field activities. He said no district in the division had witnessed operational lapses. According to the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), the 72-hour sanitation campaign was the largest in the province's history, with operations extending to Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib. The waste removal included 15,543 tonnes from Sheikhupura, 12,066 tonnes from Kasur and 6,430 tonnes from Nankana Sahib. The LWMC stated that more than 24,000 sanitation workers, operating in three shifts with over 5,000 units of machinery, ensured the execution of the plan. The infrastructure for the operation included 651 service delivery camps, 254 temporary collection points and 34 dumping sites. Approximately 2.4 million biodegradable bags were distributed to promote environment-friendly disposal. The company also reported receiving and resolving 20,268 public complaints on the Eid, with the majorityover 16,000coming from Lahore. Citizens utilised a helpline, app and social media to report issues. Real-time surveillance via Safe City Authority and drone cameras helped prevent illegal dumping in streams, drains and canals. The authorities registered 20 FIRs, seized three vehicles and imposed fines exceeding Rs300,000 for violations.
