Sabah polls: PH has a delicate balancing act to pull off, says former CM Salleh
The Sabah Umno treasurer said that with GRS opting to forge an electoral pact with Pakatan in the coming state election, Barisan will leave it to Pakatan to manage the cooperation among the three parties.

"For Barisan, we chose to work with Pakatan early on... (as) we are the foundation of the unity government at the federal level. So this cooperation is a logical and responsible continuation," the former chief minister said in a Facebook post on Monday (July 28).
"How Pakatan manages cooperation with Barisan and GRS is none of our business.
"What is important for Barisan is sincere cooperation, and our focus is to strengthen the party on the ground.
"We want to win and help our coalition partners. We are not a two-faced player.
"Our approach is clear – honest, open, and for the good of the people of Sabah."
GRS and Sabah Barisan were partners in the 2020 state election.

They have refused to work with each other since Sabah Barisan withdrew its support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor in January 2023.
Sabah Pakatan filled the vacuum and kept Hajiji's state government afloat.
Salleh said the GRS decision to forge an electoral pact with Pakatan reflected that it has chosen to work with national parties and reject the "all local" approach adopted in Sarawak.
"The GRS decision to choose Pakatan as a partner for the Sabah election deserves respect.
"It ultimately rejected the solo path and chose to work with national parties. Of course, it has (its reasons)... and the people will judge," Salleh added.
"We in Barisan have been consistent from the beginning that a coalition with Pakatan is the best approach for stability," he said.

His comments followed Hajiji's confirmation on Sunday (July 27) that an electoral pact with Pakatan had been confirmed and they were just ironing out the details.
There has been no immediate official reaction by GRS coalition partners to Hajiji's announcement.
Salleh believes that GRS chose Pakatan as a partner because it wanted to work with the Prime Minister's party to ensure good relations with the Federal Government.
"This is in line with the need to guarantee political stability and development for Sabah," he said.
Over the last few weeks, Sabah Barisan and Pakatan have reached several agreements on seats to be contested in their negotiations in Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.

Sabah PKR chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud had also said that PH eyed for 25 or 26 seats. Currently, GRS has 38 state seats; Umno 11 and PH 7. Prior to the political meeting, Anwar will also close the three-day National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day at Sabah International Convention centre here at 9am.

Mohamad, who is also the Umno deputy president, said this is a key demand from the Sabah Umno-BN leadership, aimed at ensuring the party has representation and relevance across the state, Berita Harian reported. 'In the last state election, there were several parliamentary areas that had no BN candidates at all. This dampened the morale of the Umno-BN members and machinery as they had no role to play during the election. 'When people are not given the opportunity, some become disheartened and eventually leave the party, and that's not good,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the joint Umno divisional delegates' meeting, including its Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings, in Membakut today. Mohamad said BN should be allocated at least one seat to contest in constituencies with two or three state seats. 'This would lift the spirits of our party members and make them feel included in the process,' he said. Mohamad said the proposal would be discussed at the top level through Umno's negotiation committee and among the secretaries-general of the BN component parties. 'This is my message to the secretaries-general … do not disregard this request. Every parliamentary seat must have at least one BN candidate,' he said. Also present was Umno Supreme Council member and Kimanis MP Mohamad Alamin.

Gagasan Rakyat confident of retaining Karamunting seat
Hiew briefing Masiung following a meeting with the Gagasan Rakyat Karamunting committee members. SANDAKAN (Aug 2): Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) is confident of defending the Karamunting state seat in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election. Its Vice President, Datuk Masiung Banah, said this confidence stems from the party's strong grassroots presence in the constituency, led by incumbent assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, who joined the party in March 2023. 'We can see that Gagasan Rakyat's track record in Karamunting over the past three years is very strong, and we believe it will contribute one seat to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS),' said Masiung, who is also Gagasan Rakyat's Zone 10 coordinator. He was speaking during a final preparatory election briefing held at the division's office in Jalan Laila here on Friday. According to him, the party's election machinery is well-prepared, with its three main wings — Youth, Women, and Beliawanis — mobilised since the end of last year. He added that component parties under GRS and Pakatan Harapan (PH) are also gearing up to ramp up both small- and large-scale political operations in the constituency. 'All six Polling District Centres (PDM) have been activated, and I am confident that under George's leadership, GRS will secure a strong majority in Karamunting this time around,' said Masiung. Hiew first won the Karamunting state seat during the 14th State Election in 2018 and retained it in 2020, both times under the Warisan banner, before joining Gagasan Rakyat last year. Meanwhile, Hiew revealed that 85 per cent of Warisan branch chiefs in the constituency have followed him in supporting Gagasan Rakyat under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hiew, who previously served as Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, is now the deputy coordinator of Gagasan Rakyat for Zone 10 in Sandakan.
