Kelly: Dolphins have big rookie class, with bigger expectations

Miami Herald09-05-2025
Zeek Biggers' calves are the size of tree trunks, and they're needed to hold up his 6-foot-6, 320-pound frame, which based on my Lasik-assisted eyes might be a conservative weight listing.
Probably a weight recommendation because this defensive lineman from Georgia Tech is a big man, arguably the biggest of all the newcomers on the field for Miami Dolphins rookie minicamp.
'Walking in and seeing my name on the locker, and name on my jersey is surreal,' said Biggers, the Dolphins' seventh-round pick. 'I had to take a picture of it.'
There might not be a more fitting name for a rookie nose tackle than Biggers, and it's fitting for the theme the Dolphins had, and seemingly delivered on with the eight 2025 draftees, and the 16 undrafted rookies added Friday.
These newcomers — from defensive lineman Kenneth Grant, the team's 2025 first-round pick to undrafted UCF cornerback BJ Adams — are BIG.
Big, but not flabby.
Whether they're strong and can lift last year's 8-9 team to new heights is yet to be determined. But this rookie class has just as much of a chance to deliver a handful of starters than any other crop of rookies since 2020, which was Tua Tagovailoa, Austin Jackson, Robert Hunt, Solomon Kindley and Brandon Jones' class.
That's five starters from one draft class? Can 2025 replicate that?
'In my mind it's all about work,' said Grant, who was listed at 6-3, 331 pounds, 11 pounds heavier than Biggers. 'I'm for sure going to step my foot down and show people I know how to work.'
Most of these rookies are in the best shape of their lives because of the NFL Draft training they have been doing since February.
Jonah Savaiinaea seemed svelte for offensive lineman weighing 336 pounds, 4 pounds more than Grant, and based on how he moved around during Friday's field work it's clear he has some athleticism to him.
Miami needs Savaiinaea to be an immediate starting left or right guard, and the decision-makers believe he can be, which is why they traded a third-round pick to move up 11 spots in the second round to select the former Arizona starter.
If he can't then that means the Dolphins will have to lean on Liam Eichenberg, a 2021 second-round pick who was re-signed despite his struggles the past four years (52 starts), for another season as a starter.
'I'm trying to prove myself to the vets that they can count on me, earning their trust,' Savaiinaea said. 'They don't care if you're drafted or undrafted, or just got signed. They want to see you put in that winning mentality. They want guys that want to win here. Being able to be a sponge and soak up all the information here. Take a look around at who are my vets, and [paying attention] to what they are doing.'
Rookie camp's about learning how to stretch, which field to run to when the whistle blows, learning how to watch film and digesting the playbook.
Next week, when the rookies are allowed to work with the veterans, is when the real fun begins.
'When you want to get on the field you do the studying,' said tailback Ollie Gordon II, the 2023 Doak Walker Award winner, who could potentially challenge for playing time, if not a starting role, as a rookie.
A limited grasp of the playbook is why De'Von Achane got off to a slow start his rookie season, before setting the NFL record for yards per carry.
Being a quick study, and Raheem Mostert's chest injury, led to Jaylen Wright's early rise up the depth chart. But the former fourth-round pick didn't have staying power because he wasn't diverse enough as an all-purpose back.
Gordon, who is a towering 6-foot-2, 225 pounds has a reputation for doing it all at Oklahoma State, but that was going against college players.
The NFL's the big leagues, and he will be required to wear his big boy pants if he plans to push for playing time.
Because of roster voids, and Miami's newly emphasized youth movement (that's what teams do when they are rebuilding) the 2025 team needs a handful of these rookies to play immediately — if not serve as starters — on offense, defense and special teams.
'You're here to take somebody's job, or get your job took,' Biggers said about his NFL debut. 'So [I'm] kind of just coming in ready to work and ready to do what I need to do.'

Dolphins agree to terms with Mike Hilton

The Dolphins doubled up on experienced additions to their cornerback corps on Saturday. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said that his client Mike Hilton has agreed to terms with the team. That news came after the Dolphins confirmed that they have signed former Patriots and Raiders corner Jack Jones. Hilton spent the last four seasons with the Bengals and his first four seasons with the Steelers. He had 73 tackles and an interception last season and has 520 tackles, 13 interceptions, 11.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries for his career. The Dolphins came into camp with questions at corner after trading Jalen Ramsey. They lost Artie Burns to a torn ACL in their first training camp practice and Kader Kohou left Saturday's session after suffering an apparent leg injury, but they have not given any update on his condition.

Dolphins add two veteran cornerbacks in Jack Jones, Mike Hilton

In one day, the Miami Dolphins have changed the outlook of their secondary. Former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Jack Jones signed with the Dolphins, the team announced Saturday morning. Less than six hours later, ex-Cincinnati Bengals nickel corner Mike Hilton joined the aqua and orange, according to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz This comes the same week that the Dolphins' cornerback room suffered a slew of injuries. First came Artie Burns' torn ACL on Wednesday. Then Kader Kohou suffered a leg injury during one-on-ones at Saturday's practice. Within hours, undrafted rookie BJ Adams was subsequently carted off the field. A fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Jones has earned the reputation of ballhawk as he has snagged an eye-popping seven interceptions in 42 career games. The 27-year-old has also turned four of those picks into touchdowns and amassed 136 combined tackles. 'We call him Jack Boy,' Dolphins cornerback Cornell Armstrong said of Jones, praising his energy and calling him 'a player that you want to be around.' The two briefly played together on the Raiders. 'He's going to get the ball. He's a hard worker. He has a lot of love for the game.' Jones, however, has ran into trouble off of the field. In June 2023, he was arrested on weapons charges after police allegedly found two firearms in his carry-on bag at the airport. Luckily, Jones reached a deal that dropped the charges in exchange for one year of probation and 48 hours of community service. Still, the Patriots waived Jones just five games into the 2023 campaign. The Raiders picked him up later that year. He appeared in seven games, starting just three. In 2024, Jones appeared to jump ahead on the depth chart, starting 16 of 17 games. He then turned in the best year of his young career: three picks, one of which he returned for a touchdown, 16 pass deflections and 69 total tackles. A coaching change in Las Vegas, however, led to the end of Jones' tenure in the desert. Roughly three months after Raiders named Peter Carroll as a head coach, Jones was released. Hilton, meanwhile, has 56 starts underneath his belt across eight seasons with the Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers. During that span, the now 31-yearold grabbed 13 picks and defended 56 passes. He also brings a bit of experience in the pass rush to the secondary, accumulating 11.5 sacks, 66 tackles for loss and 32 quarterback hits. An undrafted rookie who found a home with the Steelers, Hilton played the first four seasons of his career in Pittsburgh. His play landed him a four-year, $24 million gig with the Bengals. It's clear that Hilton certainly left a mark in Cincinatti. Following the news of his signing with the Dolphins, Bengals analyst Paul Dehner Jr. deemed the cornerback 'First Team All-Great Dude.' 'Won the PFWA Media Cooperation Award last year, was a team leader and a heart and soul of those stellar 2021-22 defenses and both playoff runs,' Dehner tweeted Saturday. 'One of the best free agent signings in Bengals history.' With the extent of Kohou's injury unknown, Hilton gives the Dolphins another experienced, nickel corner. He's taken the vast majority of his snaps – 4,714 to be exact – in the nickel. Outside of Kohou, the Dolphins didn't have much help in the nickel prior to Hilton's signing. Both veterans arrive in South Florida with a real chance to become a starter. Jones can create turnovers – his seven interceptions since 2022 ranks in the top 25 among all players – and the Dolphins certainly need that on the boundary. Hilton, however, can handle the nickel if Kohou opts to play on the boundary or his injury keeps him out for an extended period of time.

Dolphins RB makes confident ‘top back' declaration before training camp

The post Dolphins RB makes confident 'top back' declaration before training camp appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Miami Dolphins will be under immense pressure during the 2025 NFL season. Miami had a disappointing 2024 season in which Tua Tagovailoa was injured and the Dolphins missed the playoffs. One Dolphins player is ready to step up and make an impact during the 2025 season. Dolphins running back Jaylen Wright made a bold claim before the start of training camp. Wright feels he has the talent to become one of the best backs in the NFL. 'I just really feel like and I know I can be a top back in this league,' Wright said Thursday on Up & Adams. 'I feel like just my skill set, my ability and the system I'm in, it sets me up to be great. … It's a long season, staying the course, doing what I got to do every time I touch that rock, every time the ball comes to me just make a play. I'm very excited. I'm very blessed to be in this position. It's going to be a very great year this year.' Wright shares a backfield with third-year back De'Von Achane. Now that veteran Raheem Mostert is gone, Wright is ready to shoulder more of the workload in 2025. Wright also declared that he is ready for the Dolphins to diversify his workload. 'Pass game, I'm going to be way more involved this year,' Wright said. 'Way more involved just in everything. Run game, pass game, pass protection, everything, so it's going to be really good.' Wright had 68 carries for 249 yards as a rookie. He was minimally involved in the passing game, only managing three receptions for eight yards. The Dolphins will be counting on Wright to have a breakout season in 2025. Can Jaylen Wright help will the Dolphins back into the playoffs in 2025? If Jaylen Wright does have a breakout season, it could bring some stability to Miami's offense. But will that be enough to get the Dolphins back into the playoffs? The issue for the Dolphins is that they play in both a competitive division and conference. Miami would have to go through Buffalo if they want to guarantee homefield advantage in the postseason. Otherwise, they are at the mercy of other AFC teams in winning a wild card berth. Unfortunately, it may be Miami's defense that holds the team back. The Dolphins had concerns about their secondary before trading away Jalen Ramsey to the Steelers. If the Dolphins have trouble slowing down their opponents, they'll need to outscore them. Dolphins fans are hopeful that both their offense and defense will take a leap forward in 2025. Otherwise, it could be more of the same in Miami.
