Heartbreaking Michael Schumacher update as F1 insider opens up

Daily Record05-06-2025
Michael Schumacher is still fighting after suffering a severe brain injury in a skiing accident in December 2013, with the F1 legend continuing to receive round-the-clock care.
Formula 1 enthusiasts have been informed that they are likely to never hear from legendary driver Michael Schumacher again after his horrifying ski accident more than a decade ago.
The 56-year-old German continues to receive constant care from a dedicated medical team and his devoted wife, Corinna, following a tragic skiing accident in December 2013.

Schumacher, who won seven world titles, is arguably the most iconic name and face in F1. However, he has been kept out of the public eye since suffering a severe brain injury after striking his head on a rock in the French Alps.

Medical professionals placed him into an induced coma which lasted for 250 days before Schumacher was eventually allowed to return home and continue his treatment. His family have fiercely guarded his privacy, with Schumacher now entirely dependent on caregivers.
Updates have been few and far between, but it's been reported that the stricken racer can no longer speak. F1 fans have clung to hope for 11-and-a-half years that they'll catch another glimpse of Schumacher, who remains tied for Drivers' Championships with Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari's current icon.
However, in a recent interview, those hopes have been dashed. Craig Scarborough, who has covered the sport for approximately 25 years and interviewed Schumacher multiple times, recently spoke to the Sun and revealed details about his condition, reports the Mirror.
"I spoke to someone who is very, very close to him and they just explained we're not going to hear any more from him," Scarborough said. "He's in a comfortable position as far as he can be with his state of health."
Devoted fans will be heartened to know that Schumacher, having recently become a grandfather following his daughter Gina's childbirth, is coping as well as possible given the dreadful predicament. However, those who were intimately acquainted with him often choose not to dwell on his present condition.

Commenting on the matter, Flavio Briatore, Schumacher's previous team principal at Benetton and current head honcho at Alpine, shared with Corriere della Sera: "If I close my eyes. I see him smiling after a victory. I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed."
These reflections are matched by remarks from Schumacher's former spouse, Elisabetta Gregoraci, who disclosed in 2020: "Michael doesn't speak; he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him, and I know who they are."
It is widely believed that one of the trio permitted to visit Schumacher outside his immediate family is ex-Ferrari boss Jean Todt, who lamented in 2022: "I can see him but of course, what I miss is what we used to do together. I watch Grands Prix with Michael."

Mick Schumacher, Michael's 26 year old progeny, took part in Formula 1 contests for Haas in both 2021 and 2022. Scarborough emphasises that Mick's presence is crucial for Michael's wellbeing and commends the family's decision to uphold their privacy.
"I think a lot of people demand stuff from him and I think that's wrong," Scarborough added. "He is himself, and his family have a lot to contend with. Until you've cared for somebody, I don't think anyone realises the emotion and the physical workload.Sign up to our free weekly F1 newsletter, Pit Lane Chronicle, by entering your email address below so that every new edition lands straight in your inbox!"The fact that they have been bold enough to withdraw from public life and not be tempted to do exclusives out there to various people, I think, is noble, and I hope that continues.

"I hope they can find happiness in the situation they find themselves in. He was a guy who enjoyed his personal time.
"He loved his family. He did lots of lovely things. He clearly liked a drink and he loved a big cigar. But he had lots of time to bring up his son."
Corinna, who married Schumacher in 1995, opened up on his condition during a 2021 Netflix documentary. "We're together," she said. "We live together at home. We do therapy.
"We're trying to carry on as a family. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. We're trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does."

Being British number one is my goal – McLaren's Lando Norris

Lando Norris said he wants to overtake Lewis Hamilton as the British number one as he admitted winning at Silverstone would be the crowning moment of his career. Norris heads into his home race fresh from an impressive victory over Oscar Piastri which puts him 15 points behind his McLaren team-mate ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix. The 25-year-old will have his own grandstand at Silverstone, hosting 10,000 of his fans, while he is also the leading Briton in the championship, two places ahead of Mercedes' George Russell. Hamilton is sixth in the standings, 110 points behind Norris and without a podium in his debut Ferrari campaign. However, the seven-time world champion has won a record nine times at Silverstone. 'From a British perspective, I have the best chance of winning the race and of course I am the one that is most likely to be fighting for the championship this season,' said Norris. 'Am I the British number one? I don't know. I don't know how much you have to take into account history. If you do, then Lewis is quite convincingly at the top – he has a lot more wins, poles and championships than anyone else put together. 'Being the British number one would be nice, that's my goal, the same as it is with any sportsman, whether it is in tennis or golf, you want to be the number one, but I would say I haven't proven myself to be there yet. But it is something I am working on.' Norris bounced back from the horror of crashing into Piastri in Canada by securing a dominant pole position in Spielberg and then holding off Piastri to claim his third win of the season. After winning the season opener in Melbourne, Norris claimed his second win of the year in Monaco. But when asked if winning his home race for the first time would be the crowning moment of his career, Norris replied: 'Yes. It is tough to put something above Monaco but if I could swap all my race wins for one, it would be for a win here, so that is the plan. 'Winning at Monaco and Silverstone is different. Monaco has the history, and it means so much to win there, but Silverstone is my home race and the one that puts the bigger smile on my face. And since a kid watching Formula One, it is the one I have wanted to win the most.' Norris will be keen to carry over his championship momentum from Spielberg to Silverstone. However, he has never won back-to-back races in F1. He added: 'I definitely felt more back on track in Austria but is not a guarantee I will have that here because it can be track specific. 'In Austria, I felt better and back in the rhythm. My lap in qualifying was one of the best I have ever done, so, yes, the old me was back. 'But I need that consistency and I need to prove that to myself. The win gives you more motivation and you want to feel as though you can use your home race as an advantage and I hope that is the case this weekend.'

George Russell adamant he will not be leaving Mercedes: ‘Toto has never let me down'

George Russell believes he won't be leaving Mercedes at the end of the season despite speculation linking Red Bull's Max Verstappen with the team. Russell, who is in the middle of his fourth season with Mercedes, does not currently have a contract beyond 2025 despite a strong first half of the season. Four-time F1 world champion Verstappen has long been courted by Mercedes boss Toto Wolff and reports in Italian media this week state that the Dutchman is open to the prospect of joining the Silver Arrows next year. Russell revealed last week that Mercedes are in discussions with Verstappen. But Russell, who is in the midst of his first campaign without Lewis Hamilton as his teammate, insists he knows where Mercedes's loyalty lies. 'There's a lot of conversations behind the scenes that are not public and I know where their loyalty lies,' Russell said, ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix. 'It doesn't need to be public or broadcast to everybody, we've spoken a bit more in the last week. 'Every team has two seats available, it's normal that every team is considering what the future holds. I don't take that personally. I made it clear from the beginning that I'm happy to be teammates with anybody. 'Toto has never let me down, he's given me his word, but he's also going to do what's right for his team. For me, it's nothing to worry about. I don't think I'll be going anywhere.' Asked directly if he was speaking to other teams, Russell replied: 'No.' The 27-year-old, teammates with 18-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli this year, added that he hopes for a resolution in the 'next few weeks', before F1's summer break starts at the beginning of August. He signed off the press conference by stating: 'The likelihood I'm not at Mercedes next year is exceptionally low.' Verstappen has a contract at Red Bull until the end of 2028, but various reports this week have stated that he can activate a release clause if he is lower than fourth in the drivers' standings by the summer break. The Dutchman is currently third in the standings, 36 points ahead of Charles Leclerc in fifth and nine points clear of Russell in fourth.

George Russell ‘calling' F1 teams as Nico Rosberg proven right on Mercedes star

Toto Wolff's very public pursuit of Red Bull star Max Verstappen has reportedly sprung George Russell into action, with the Mercedes star's future now looking uncertain Nico Rosberg's previous comments about George Russell's precarious position at Mercedes seem to be hitting the mark, as Toto Wolff's chase for Max Verstappen heats up. The Silver Arrows' boss has not been shy about his admiration for Red Bull's No. 1 driver, and it appears Russell could be the one to make way for the Dutch star. Wolff's courting of Verstappen has been public knowledge for some time, while Russell's contract has not been extended beyond this year. ‌ Such is the speculation around Russell being replaced, Sky Sports ' Martin Brundle has even claimed that the 27-year-old is now ringing teams, looking to find a new home for his talents, as concerns grow over his future in F1. ‌ Former world champion Rosberg told Russell last season that his job was not safe, insisting that Wolff would never tire in his chase of Verstappen. The ex-Mercedes star looks to have been proven correct, which will pile the pressure on Russell to outperform team-mate Kimi Antonelli this season, with the British Grand Prix fast approaching. "George Russell is not safe at all because Toto still wants Max and he will try again for 2026," Rosberg said on Sky Sports in September 2024. "'Give up' does not appear in Toto's vocabulary. "So if Max does become available and I do think it's a possibility, then it is a shootout between George and Kimi next year. And it's a lot of pressure on George because he has everything to lose. He should be the one ahead because Kimi is 18 and completely new. It's not an easy situation for George." Sky Italy has claimed that Verstappen would be willing to consider a switch from Red Bull to Mercedes, with Wolff reportedly laying down an offer. Yet, Red Bull maintains that their star driver hasn't shown any eagerness to jump ship just yet. Brundle, sharing his insights on Sky Sports F1, reckons Russell is now scrambling for a backup plan amid the swirling rumours. "I think George Russell is nervous and ringing around a little bit," he said. ‌ "There's no smoke without fire. 2026 is massive, biggest change ever in F1 for the chassis and power unit and you guess Mercedes will be there or thereabouts. Would you put Red Bull (there) and can Max actually get out of his contract? Something's up." Wolff once again revealed his ambitions to land Verstappen to Sky Sports in late June but claimed it did not impact Russell's new deal with the team. "First of all, there is no delay in George's contract situation because it's pretty clear since a long time what our timings were," Wolff said. "We've known each other for such a long time, so there is no such thing as a delay. ‌ "But also as a team principal responsible for the best car brand in the world, it is clear you're exploring what a four-time world champion [Verstappen] is going to do in the future, and that could be a long time in the future. But that has no effect on us putting a signature on George's contract." Wolff added that Russell was aware of Mercedes' position on Verstappen. Mercedes' German chief has been the source of mixed messaging when it comes to chasing the Red Bull icon. ‌ Summer 2024 saw Wolff publicly declare his interest in Verstappen over for the time being - yet his short-term commitment to Antonelli and Russell did little to banish the rumours and instead just moved them a year down the line. As for Red Bull, they've not been shy about revealing that Verstappen holds an exit clause in his contract that reportedly allows him to leave if he moves lower than third in the World Drivers' Championship standings at a any point in the F1 2025 season. Vertsappen is currently third in the standings, just nine points above Russell in fourth. However, it is understood that the clause changes to the top four after the Hungarian Grand Prix, just ahead of the summer break. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has also conceded that Verstappen does have a release clause "based on performance". Speaking after the Austrian Grand Prix, where Verstappen was taken out of the race after a coming-together with Antonelli, Marko added that "there is no concern whatsoever about an exit" when it comes to Red Bull's prized possession. While team boss Christian Horner has called the ongoing speculation as "a lot of noise."
