This preseason, the Caps are headed to Hershey to face the Flyers
The Capitals are scheduled to face the Philadelphia Flyers in a preseason game at Hershey's Giant Center on Sept. 25. It will be the first time Washington has played in Hershey since 2006.
This year brings the 20th anniversary of Washington's affiliation with the Bears, a partnership that has produced five Calder Cup titles and 69 players who made stops in the American Hockey League with Hershey on their way to playing for Washington in the NHL. Both sides have long been pleased with the affiliation, which last year was extended through 2030.
The first phase of renovations at Capital One Arena, which is expected to be complete in time for the regular season in October, presented an opportunity for the Capitals to join forces with the Bears and celebrate the anniversary. Bryan Helmer, Hershey's vice president of hockey operations, said he has wanted to bring Washington to town for a preseason game since he got the job nine years ago. This year, the timing worked out.
'Every year, Bryan Helmer asks, like, 'Hey, just so you know, we'd love to have you guys up here if you want to do a game,'' Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick said. 'I know they're going to be really excited. The fans are going to be really excited. I think it'll be really cool for our guys, too.'
'We're so ecstatic and very excited about it, to have them come down,' Helmer said. 'It's a big year for the affiliation, being the 20th season anniversary, so that just puts the icing on the cake. … I know [Bears fans are] going to be very excited and this place is going to be rocking on the 25th of September.'
For Carlson, heading back to Hershey will be a welcome trip down memory lane.
'It's a great idea,' he said. 'Obviously it's meaningful for me to go back there, and I have many memories there and owe a lot of my success to my development through those times. I think it's just exciting to do something a little different. Innovation is crucial and also a lot of fun.'
Carlson has toyed with the idea of bringing his four children to Hershey for a playoff game in recent years, but the plan never fully materialized. Now, they'll get to see their dad play an NHL preseason game in the building where he made his debut as a professional in 2009.
'I think the fans will enjoy it. They're very, very passionate in their own way,' Carlson said. 'They're going to be just thrilled to have some ex-players, some Capitals. A lot of them, they might have never seen, you know, Rasmus Sandin play, but now they're fans of him and they get to see him, too. There's kind of all different angles of how cool it will be for the fans. I'm sure, knowing them, they're going to go above and beyond to make it an NHL big league atmosphere.'
Last season, Hershey had the third-highest attendance in the AHL, with 9,744 in the building on average. (Giant Center's capacity is 10,500.) The fans in Hershey are dedicated and passionate. When Todd Nelson, who coached the Bears the past three years before being hired as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was moving into his new home in Hershey, a neighbor stopped by to introduce herself — and remind him that it had been 13 years since the Bears won the Calder Cup.
Under Nelson's watch, Hershey won the Calder Cup in 2023 and 2024. The Bears also went back-to-back in 2009 and 2010, when Carlson was on the team.
'When you're a champion in Hershey, our fans don't forget about it,' Helmer said. 'They'll be very excited to see a guy like John Carlson back in Hershey and skating on the Giant Center rink.'
In addition to Carlson, seven other players — Tom Wilson, Connor McMichael, Aliaksei Protas, Martin Fehervary, Ethen Frank, Dylan McIlrath and Alex Alexeyev — on Washington's roster at the end of last season spent time in Hershey along their journey with the Capitals.
'The affiliation has been so successful, and the relationship that we have with Washington, for them to have a preseason game down here is very exciting,' Helmer said. 'It just shows you how strong the relationship is to have them come down and show [off] the Capitals players and what they bring every day up there. To bring [them] down here is pretty sweet.'
'It's just been such a good relationship,' Patrick added. 'It's nice that we can show that we're invested in their community and their fans as well, because their fans are so supportive of us all the time.'

49ers Urged To Sign Purdy Protector Amid Impending Retirement
49ers Urged To Sign Purdy Protector Amid Impending Retirement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers have a decent offensive line. In their offseason rankings, Pro Football Network has them placed as the 15th best unit in the NFL with a respectable 80.2 grade. Advertisement Most of that production is credited to All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, who is among the most respected and feared linemen in football when he's on the field. Last season, however, he dealt with injury and the rest of the unit saw a concerning drop in production during his absence. Williams, who is about to turn 37, is in the twilight of his career, and while he hasn't slowed down much, retirement is imminent in the next few years. That is why ESPN believes the 49ers should get ahead of business with the rest of the offensive line and re-sign right tackle Colton McKivitz. "McKivitz's contract ends after the 2025 season, and the 49ers don't want to be stuck having to replace both tackles at the same time," reporter Aaron Schatz wrote. Advertisement This shouldn't be a major contract, but maybe a two-year cushion should suffice and protect the 49ers from the event of a surprise Williams retirement. McKivitz has starting experience in San Fran and has shown considerable improvement each season, but he's still got a long way to go in ultimately filling Williams' shoes. The 2020 fifth rounder had a down season in 2024, ranking 52nd out of 66 qualifying tackles with an 85.9 percent pass block win rate. As a group, the Niners O-line struggled more in protecting the pass than the run, especially toward the end of the year without Williams in the lineup. PFN noted that the 49ers gave up a 37.1 percent pressure rate to opposing rushers. That number seems inflated, but it isn't all the fault of the offensive line. Quarterback Brock Purdy held onto the ball for an average of over three seconds in the pocket, which was the sixth-highest mark in the league. Advertisement San Francisco is likely to let this season play out with McKivitz on a contract year, hoping he is motivated to perform at a high level and earn his next deal. Williams has assured fans that he believes he can play until he's at least 40, but on a relatively aging offense around young QB Purdy, it's never a bad thing to have long-term stability at crucial positions. How one Jaguars free agent signing has impressed Liam Coen, Trevor Lawrence this offseason
The Jacksonville Jaguars view wide receiver Dyami Brown as an ascending player. It's why the team prioritized signing him during free agency back in March. Brown put together a fantastic postseason with Washington this past season, which included totaling 229 receiving yards over three games, but overall throughout his career, he hasn't had all that much production. In fact, his 30 receptions and 308 yards in the 2024 regular season were both career highs. Advertisement But in Jacksonville, Brown will get more opportunities. However, opportunities in this regard don't only refer to the number of targets that may come his way, but it's also about what he's asked to do within this Liam Coen offense. With impressive speed, Brown can provide the Jaguars with a vertical presence who can stretch the field. He can also get the ball near the line of scrimmage on designed touches where his YAC abilities can take over. We saw a lot of that from Brown during his tenure with the Commanders. But Coen sees a wideout who can impact all three levels of the field, which is something that Brown is going to be asked to do with the Jaguars as they expand his route tree. "You didn't really see him work the intermediate that much [in Washington], and I think over the course of this spring, Trevor and him have gained a little bit of a chemistry on some of those intermediate in-breakers, curls, maybe outcuts," Coen said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN. Advertisement "... Part of the selling point to have him come here was, 'Man, we really want to continue to diversify your route tree and have you do more. You're not just a screen, jet sweep, vertical threat.'" Having receivers who can make an impact at each level of the field and do so in a variety of ways adds to that multiplicity element that Coen wants present in this offense. It becomes very difficult for defenses to get a beat on what's coming based on who is on the field or where players are lined up if each pass catcher can run a number of different routes. Through the OTA and minicamp practices, Brown has made a strong impression, not only with Coen but with quarterback Trevor Lawrence as well. 'Man, I've been super impressed with him," Lawrence said during minicamp. "His speed. Obviously, he is a threat down the field, which is important as a receiver who can stretch the field. But also, he's a really, really smart football player. Advertisement "He's picked up the system really quickly. He's always in the right spot. I think that's something about him, I don't know if you guys watched plenty of practices, he's gotten the ball a lot because it seems like he's always in the right spot."
