'Massive' 1,000 Pound Shark Caught at Popular U.S. Beach
Anglers dropped bait into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday morning, and they were met with the catch of a lifetime just a few short hours later. Trey Linder and Steve Callaway caught a huge tiger shark. The shark measured an astonishing 11 feet and 8 inches, and it weighed in at an estimated 1,000 pounds. Linder and Callaway posed for a photo with the shark before tagging it and releasing it back into the water near Pensacola, Florida. The anglers The anglers, who work with Shark and Shore, noted that it takes around three minutes to tag, take photos and release the sharks back into the water. The sharks are tagged for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and NOAA says that the summer is usually the best time to catch sharks. Shark biologist John Carlson says that coastal sharks come closer inland in search of warmer water so they can give birth, leading to more sightings in the summer months. The anglers were taken out on a boat from Coast Guard Yakers LBSF Charters, and they were able to bring the anglers near one of the biggest catches of their careers on. the water. The Florida Museum says that tiger sharks are the most commonly caught coastal shark in the United States. They can grow up to 2,000 pounds, and to over 18 feet. Tiger sharks aren't as dangerous as great whites, but they still pose a threat to those who are in the water. Tiger sharks account for the second-most bites on humans around the world, and they can sometimes mistake humans for their natural prey like sea turtles. NOAA lists several shark species on its website, as it continues to focus conservation efforts on dwindling or nearly extinct populations. "We are committed to sustainable shark management," the organizations says about its policies regarding shark conservation. "We manage commercial and recreational shark fisheries in the Atlantic Ocean and work with three regional fishery management councils to conserve and sustainably manage sharks in the Pacific Ocean." NOAA notes that it conducts research, assesses stocks, works with U.S. fishermen and implements restrictions on shark harvests. "We have made significant progress toward ending overfishing and rebuilding overfished stocks for long-term sustainability," they said. After catching and monitoring one of the largest sharks in the Gulf, the team has certainly done more than enough in and around Pensacola. This preseason, the Caps are headed to Hershey to face the Flyers
John Carlson hasn't been back to Hershey since he won the Calder Cup with the Bears in 2010. Carlson was just 20 then, at the beginning of what turned into a long career with the Washington Capitals. But the defenseman, now 35 and more than 1,000 games into his NHL career, will be back in Pennsylvania this fall. The Capitals are scheduled to face the Philadelphia Flyers in a preseason game at Hershey's Giant Center on Sept. 25. It will be the first time Washington has played in Hershey since 2006. This year brings the 20th anniversary of Washington's affiliation with the Bears, a partnership that has produced five Calder Cup titles and 69 players who made stops in the American Hockey League with Hershey on their way to playing for Washington in the NHL. Both sides have long been pleased with the affiliation, which last year was extended through 2030. The first phase of renovations at Capital One Arena, which is expected to be complete in time for the regular season in October, presented an opportunity for the Capitals to join forces with the Bears and celebrate the anniversary. Bryan Helmer, Hershey's vice president of hockey operations, said he has wanted to bring Washington to town for a preseason game since he got the job nine years ago. This year, the timing worked out. 'Every year, Bryan Helmer asks, like, 'Hey, just so you know, we'd love to have you guys up here if you want to do a game,'' Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick said. 'I know they're going to be really excited. The fans are going to be really excited. I think it'll be really cool for our guys, too.' 'We're so ecstatic and very excited about it, to have them come down,' Helmer said. 'It's a big year for the affiliation, being the 20th season anniversary, so that just puts the icing on the cake. … I know [Bears fans are] going to be very excited and this place is going to be rocking on the 25th of September.' For Carlson, heading back to Hershey will be a welcome trip down memory lane. 'It's a great idea,' he said. 'Obviously it's meaningful for me to go back there, and I have many memories there and owe a lot of my success to my development through those times. I think it's just exciting to do something a little different. Innovation is crucial and also a lot of fun.' Carlson has toyed with the idea of bringing his four children to Hershey for a playoff game in recent years, but the plan never fully materialized. Now, they'll get to see their dad play an NHL preseason game in the building where he made his debut as a professional in 2009. 'I think the fans will enjoy it. They're very, very passionate in their own way,' Carlson said. 'They're going to be just thrilled to have some ex-players, some Capitals. A lot of them, they might have never seen, you know, Rasmus Sandin play, but now they're fans of him and they get to see him, too. There's kind of all different angles of how cool it will be for the fans. I'm sure, knowing them, they're going to go above and beyond to make it an NHL big league atmosphere.' Last season, Hershey had the third-highest attendance in the AHL, with 9,744 in the building on average. (Giant Center's capacity is 10,500.) The fans in Hershey are dedicated and passionate. When Todd Nelson, who coached the Bears the past three years before being hired as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was moving into his new home in Hershey, a neighbor stopped by to introduce herself — and remind him that it had been 13 years since the Bears won the Calder Cup. Under Nelson's watch, Hershey won the Calder Cup in 2023 and 2024. The Bears also went back-to-back in 2009 and 2010, when Carlson was on the team. 'When you're a champion in Hershey, our fans don't forget about it,' Helmer said. 'They'll be very excited to see a guy like John Carlson back in Hershey and skating on the Giant Center rink.' In addition to Carlson, seven other players — Tom Wilson, Connor McMichael, Aliaksei Protas, Martin Fehervary, Ethen Frank, Dylan McIlrath and Alex Alexeyev — on Washington's roster at the end of last season spent time in Hershey along their journey with the Capitals. 'The affiliation has been so successful, and the relationship that we have with Washington, for them to have a preseason game down here is very exciting,' Helmer said. 'It just shows you how strong the relationship is to have them come down and show [off] the Capitals players and what they bring every day up there. To bring [them] down here is pretty sweet.' 'It's just been such a good relationship,' Patrick added. 'It's nice that we can show that we're invested in their community and their fans as well, because their fans are so supportive of us all the time.'

Play By Play: Capitals Come Up Short In Game 5 Loss To End Season
May 8, 2025; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson (74) scores a goal on Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen (31) in the third period in game two of the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Capital One Arena. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images It's that time, folks. After a couple of days off, the Washington Capitals are set to host the Carolina Hurricanes for a Game 5 match up that will hopefully see the Capitals extend their season. It's do or die tonight for the Caps. Final: 3-1 Canes. Look for Sammi's takeaways as we enter another offseason. Thanks for reading along. 3rd Period: 00:00 - 3-1 Final. Advertisement Jarvis seals it with an EN goal. 3-1. 1:59 - well. 2-1 Canes. 3:41 - HUGE save by Thompson. We're still tied but the Caps are definitely bringing it now. Big hit by Thomas Wilson. Big block by Chychrun. Just a much higher level of energy this period. I also appreciate that the refs are letting them play. - THIS. THIS IS THE PUSHBACK THEY'VE NEEDED. 13:34 - Caps almost break through but Andersen keeps it tied. 19:04 - PLD breaks through and gets a quality chance that's stopped by Andersen. Caps to the power play. Martinook attempted to remove Wilson's head from his shoulders with that hit. Hopefully Wilson makes him pay on the scoreboard. Advertisement - Away we go. 2nd Period: 00:00 - Capitals escape the second period still tied, after it looked like they had taken a lead. I mean they literally escape…Seth Jarvis rings one off the crossbar at the end of the period, after a poor turnover that should've ended the period more comfortably for DC. Shots are 17-9 in favor of Carolina. Capitals played a better period but they still need more. Carolina will start the 3rd with 19 seconds of power play time remaining. 1:41 - Hurricanes pressing. Thompson making some big big saves. TVR getting a penalty for a retaliation against Gostisbehere. Not an ideal time for that. Advertisement 9:21 - PK looking solid for the Capitals as they successfully kill off the penalty. - D.C. crowd really uniting around their general dislike of the referee right now. Overall, Washington is looking better this period. They strung together some good pressure in the offensive zone and showed how to beat this Carolina system. Now they just need to score more goals. 11:21 - Beauvillier with an interference penalty, because apparently that was interference. Caps to the PK. 12:33 - Canes kill the penalty. 14:33 - Caps back to the power play. And it's called back. Remains tied. 17:45 - Just like they drew it up. Broken play turns into a Matt Roy blast. Advertisement Play is offside though. It's being challenged but it will certainly come back. - The Capitals must be THN readers because it seems like they have more energy coming out this period. I can't help but think I had a role in this. We are underway in the second. 1st Period: End of the first period. Not sure what Thompson was doing swimming at the end there, but he also came up with some big-time important stops to keep it tied. Also an unfortunate post by Chychrun that could've given the Caps the lead. Shots: 8-4 in favor of the Hurricanes. The Corsi isn't as bad as you'd think a 51.35 percent in favor of the Canes. Advertisement That period could've been worse, but the energy level still needs to come up. The Capitals aren't playing much like a team that will be making golf reservations tomorrow if they don't get it into a new gear. Good thing for them is the Hurricanes aren't exactly playing like a team that wants to close out the series either. The Capitals can seize on this. 6:19 - Beau! 1-1! Not really a big energy play, but the crowd is alive. Sometimes you just have to take advantage of the other team's mistakes and Beauvillier did just that. Let's see if that breathes some life into that bench. Advertisement 9:00 - Someone needs to step up for Washington. There is zero energy right now and the crowd can definitely tell. 10:22 - Jordan Staal beats Thompson over the shoulder. LT really should've had that one. 1-0 12:30 - Ovechkin gets caught on a turnover and the Hurricanes kill some time off the power play. Capitals' PP looked disorganized and out of sorts until the last 30 seconds, when they finally string together some good play. Still scoreless. 14:30 - Caps going to the power play after a Dmitri Orlov hooking call. 17:44 - Caps controlling the play so far for the most part. Still no official shots for either team. Advertisement 20:00 - And awayyyyyy we go. Pregame: The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Capital One Arena. If the Capitals are to beat Carolina, they need something from Alex Ovechkin
RALEIGH, N.C. — It is both inaccurate and unfair to lay the blame for the Washington Capitals' deficit in their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series at the feet of one player. Hockey is a team sport. Nineteen guys took the ice Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes. There were mistakes all over the place. (Looking at you, John Carlson.)

Svechnikov, Andersen lead Hurricanes past Capitals 4-0 in Game 3 of 2nd-round playoff series
RALEIGH, N.C. — Andrei Svechnikov pounced on a loose faceoff puck for his sixth postseason goal while Frederik Andersen had 21 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals 4-0 on Saturday night for a 2-1 lead in their second-round playoff series. Svechnikov sprang into the circle to beat John Carlson to the puck and beat Logan Thompson at 12:34 of the second for the game's first goal in what turned out to be the start of Carolina's game-seizing surge.
