Vaibhavi scores 85.33% in spite of personal tragedy

Hindustan Times06-05-2025
Pune: At a time when her father's inhuman death was headlining different narratives in the political corridors of the state and the Centre besides people converging at her village and home, Vaibhavi Deshmukh, daughter of Santosh Deshmukh, remained focussed to appear for the Class 12 exams.
Her father, the Massajog sarpanch, was allegedly abducted, brutally tortured, and eventually murdered on December 9, 2024. According to the police, the murder took place after Deshmukh confronted people who were allegedly trying to extort money from a windmill company at the firm's premises.
With 85.33 per cent in the Science stream in HSC Class 12 exams conducted by the state board from February 11 to March 11, Vaibhavi has showed grit grappling with the grief of her father's untimely and tragic death.
Deshmukh's murder had sent shockwaves across Maharashtra, triggering both political and social unrest. As the case unfolded and garnered public attention, so did the story of Vaibhavi's perseverance. Her subject-wise scores include 63 in English, 83 in Marathi, 94 in Mathematics, 83 in Physics, 91 in Chemistry, and 98 in Biology. Despite not being able to prepare better for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET) exams due to her involvement in ongoing legal and justice-seeking efforts with her uncle Dhananjay Deshmukh, she did not allow adversity to derail her board exam performance.
'My father would have been proud of my Class 12 results. I appeared for the NEET exam held yesterday, but I don't expect a high score. I demand death penalty for those who murdered my father and arrest of an accused still at large,' she said.
Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said, 'After losing father, Santosh Deshmukh, Vaibhavi overcame immense emotional and social challenges to score 85.13% in her exams. Her success is more than just academic — a symbol of strength, resilience, and hope.'
Baramati MP Supriya Sule said, 'Vaibhavi Deshmukh, the brave daughter of the late Santosh Deshmukh of Massajog, has achieved remarkable success in her Class 12 exams under extremely adverse circumstances. Her triumph is truly inspirational. Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for her future journey.'

Woman loses Rs 61.2L in digital arrest scam

Mangaluru: A woman fell victim to a digital arrest scam and lost Rs 61.2 lakh in Mangaluru. According to police, the complainant claimed she received a call on June 19 from an unknown person claiming to be investigation officer Sandeep from Colaba police station, Mumbai. Speaking in English, the caller alleged that someone was involved in illegal activities such as human trafficking and drug smuggling using the complainant's identity card, and the latter's Canara Bank account was being used for money laundering. The complainant later received some more calls on the same day. During these calls, the complainant was threatened that if the matter was disclosed to her husband or anyone else, her husband would lose his job. The next day, someone identifying himself as investigation officer Mohit Kumar made a WhatsApp video call. He reiterated the same allegations and collected the complainant's personal details, PAN card information, and bank account details. He told her her accounts needed to be verified and instructed her to transfer money, assuring her that the full amount would be refunded. Under fear and pressure not to disclose this to anyone, the complainant did not inform anyone about the matter. From June 21 to July 9, she transferred a total of Rs 61.2 lakh — in phases — via RTGS to various bank accounts as instructed by the unknown individuals. When the fraudsters continued to demand more money in the subsequent days, the complainant finally informed her husband and children and realised she was cheated. A case has been registered at the CEN crime police station.

MNS Workers Create Ruckus At Nagpur Bank Over Hindi-Marathi Row

Last Updated: MNS workers protested at Union Bank in Nagpur after it refused an insurance claim due to an FIR in Marathi, highlighting language tensions in Maharashtra. Amid the ongoing language row in Maharashtra, several workers of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) created a chaos at a bank in Nagpur following a row over the usage of the Marathi. Several MNS workers launched a protest against Union Bank of India's Seminary Hills branch in Nagpur after the bank allegedly refused to process an insurance claim because the FIR submitted was in Marathi. During the protest, the party workers allegedly had a verbal spat with bank officials who sought Hindi translation of an FIR registered in Marathi. The issue began after the death of a young man named Yogesh Bopche. Following his death, the bereaved family approached the bank to initiate the insurance claim process and submitted all required documents, including a copy of the FIR, news agency IANS reported. Nagpur, Maharashtra: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers staged a protest outside Union Bank over a demand for a Hindi-translated FIR for an accident insurance claim linked to deceased youth Yogesh Bopche's account. The family was subsequently denied the insurance compensation. Irked with this, the family reached out to local MNS leaders who reached the bank along with hundreds of workers to protest and created a ruckus. The incident has triggered serious questions about the functioning of banks and financial institutions in Maharashtra, with critics arguing that rejecting documents in Marathi not only defies legal norms but also hurts public sentiment. Meanwhile, bank officials told India Today that since the headquarters of the insurance company is in Kolkata, where no one understands Marathi. So, as a regular practice, Hindi translations of FIRs registered in accident cases are sent there along with the claim form. Language Row In Maharashtra The incident came into fore at a time when the Thackeray brothers– Shiv Sena (UBT's) Uddhav Thackeray and MNS' Raj Thackeray– have targeted the BJP-led state government for trying to 'impose' Hindi in Maharashtra and migrants for not speaking Marathi. Last week, an auto-rickshaw driver in Maharashtra's Palghar was thrashed in public, allegedly by the supporters of Uddhav Sena and Raj Thackeray's MNS over his refusal to speak Marathi. A video of the auto-rickshaw driver, a migrant, went viral, showing him arguing with another migrant from Uttar Pradesh, Bhavesh Padolia, at Virar station. He said in the video that he would only speak Hindi when he was asked why he was not speaking in Marathi. Earlier, MNS workers threw stones and vandalised the office of a businessman named Sushil Kedia, who had earlier issued an open dare to Raj Thackeray, stating that he would not be intimidated by MNS workers or be forced to learn Marathi under pressure. Earlier this month, a shopkeeper in Mumbai's Mira Road was assaulted after he allegedly refused to speak in Marathi.
