Controversy erupts in Beed after murder accused Valmik Karad's photo appears on political banner

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A controversy erupted in Beed after birthday wishes on banners put up for a Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) functionary carried the photograph of Valmik Karad — the prime accused in the murder of Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh — alongside top leaders from the state. Karad, who is currently lodged in Beed prison under stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), was prominently featured on a hoarding wishing NCP district general secretary Babasaheb Ghughe on his birthday. The banners also displayed images of deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, former state minister Dhananjay Munde, and ministers Pankaja Munde, Chhagan Bhujbal, and state women's commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar, among others. Ghughe could not be reached for his comment on the issue. Following objections, the banners — placed at visible spots in the city — were removed by the authorities. Speaking to TOI, Shivaji Nagar police station inspector Kishore Pawar said, "On Monday, the banner with Walmik Karad's photo was brought to the notice of our seniors, following which we reached out to the civic body, and we have been told that the banner was on a valid hoarding space. However, due to the objections, it was immediately removed. " Pawar clarified that no formal complaint had been filed in connection with the incident. Police have not registered any offence regarding the display of the banner. The Beed district body of NCP distanced itself from the controversy, citing that the banner was put up in a personal capacity and photos of political leaders from various parties were put on the banner. The controversy sparked outrage among family members of slain sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. His brother, Dhananjay Deshmukh, questioned the silence of senior political leaders over inclusion of Karad's photo. "We can see the banner of the main accused in the Santosh Deshmukh murder case at various locations. We were wondering whether the leaders, workers or minister felt good after looking at these banners," he said. Deshmukh further pointed out that several of these same leaders had earlier demanded a SIT probe and capital punishment for those involved in his brother's killing. "How did the leaders not see these banners? If this kind of incident took place in their family, would they have used the photographs of the accused in the same manner? We will wait and watch what action is taken," he added. Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was kidnapped, brutally assaulted, and killed on Dec 9, 2023. The motive, police said, stemmed from his opposition to an extortion racket allegedly targeting an energy company. Seven persons, including Karad—known to be a close aide of minister Dhananjay Munde—were arrested and booked under MCOCA. The other accused are Sudarshan Ghule, Vishnu Chate, Jairam Chate, Mahesh Kedar, Sudhir Sangale, and Prateek Ghule. One more suspect, Krishna Andhale, is absconding.

Maratha community members stage protest before Ajit Pawar during Beed visit

Maratha community members on Monday staged a protest in front of deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, demanding strict action against the accused involved in the attack on Maratha youth Shivaraj Divate, a resident of Limbuta village in Parli on Friday afternoon. The activists gathered before the gate of Parali rest house and demanded, 'Give justice Ajit dada.' The sloganeering lasted for ten to fifteen minutes, after which the DCM came out and gave a patient hearing to the activists. He was accompanied by MLAs Pankaja and Dhananjay Munde. Pawar promised the activists that strict action would be taken, after which the activists left the venue. Pawar, who was on a visit to Beed, was met with sloganeering by agitated Maratha activists, some of whom handed over a memorandum seeking strict action against the accused. Pawar is on his maiden visit to Beed after becoming the district guardian minister. He stated that the CM has reviewed the case and issued necessary instructions that such violent behavior will not be tolerated, regardless of the political affiliations of those involved. Pawar further said that strict action will be taken against all the accused and that the process to invoke the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) has been initiated. ' All the accused will face strict action. The process to implement MCOCA has started,' Pawar said. Currently Beed district has been witnessing communal tension and caste clashes between Marathas and Vanjari communities in the wake of the brutal murder of Massajog Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. The Deputy chief minister had issued directives to the Beed police to invoke stringent sections of Bharati Nyay Sanhita, including the invocation of MCOCA if needed, against the suspects. The victim claimed that he could have become Santosh Deshmukh part II had the necessary interventions by locals not taken place on the day of the attack. Tensions between the two communities have been on the boil since Deshmukh's murder, where the accused belongs to the Vanjari community. The district has also witnessed caste flare-ups from time to time, hinting at a game of one-upmanship and domination.

Youth assaulted in Parli, 20 face murder bid case

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: An 18-year-old youth from Parli was allegedly abducted and violently attacked by 20 people on Friday evening over petty issues. Beed superintendent of police Navneet Kanawat confirmed that 20 people had been charged, with seven already in custody. While returning from a religious gathering at Jalapur, Shivraj Diwate , who resides in Limbote village near Parli, was pursued by the assailants. According to police, the attackers, travelling on two-wheelers, intercepted Diwate and his friend who were on a motorbike. They gagged Diwate and took him to a nearby hill. In a now-viral video, Diwate can be seen being severely beaten with belts and wooden sticks. The viral footage of the assault brought back disturbing memories of Masajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh's murder on Dec 9 last year. "The assault stemmed from trivial matters and involved people of different castes. We have imposed serious charges against the perpetrators," Kanawat said. The SP dismissed any caste-related motivations and urged Beed district residents to disregard rumours about the incident. Currently receiving treatment at Ambajogai government hospital, Diwate told reporters that two passers-by witnessed his assault and raised an alarm, enabling his escape. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Want Lower Bills Without Changing a Thing? elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Learn More Undo "There was some quarrel at Jalalpur during the religious event, and I had only observed it. Vaibhavi scores 85.33% in spite of personal tragedy

Pune: At a time when her father's inhuman death was headlining different narratives in the political corridors of the state and the Centre besides people converging at her village and home, Vaibhavi Deshmukh, daughter of Santosh Deshmukh, remained focussed to appear for the Class 12 exams. Her father, the Massajog sarpanch, was allegedly abducted, brutally tortured, and eventually murdered on December 9, 2024. According to the police, the murder took place after Deshmukh confronted people who were allegedly trying to extort money from a windmill company at the firm's premises. With 85.33 per cent in the Science stream in HSC Class 12 exams conducted by the state board from February 11 to March 11, Vaibhavi has showed grit grappling with the grief of her father's untimely and tragic death. Deshmukh's murder had sent shockwaves across Maharashtra, triggering both political and social unrest. As the case unfolded and garnered public attention, so did the story of Vaibhavi's perseverance. Her subject-wise scores include 63 in English, 83 in Marathi, 94 in Mathematics, 83 in Physics, 91 in Chemistry, and 98 in Biology. Despite not being able to prepare better for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET) exams due to her involvement in ongoing legal and justice-seeking efforts with her uncle Dhananjay Deshmukh, she did not allow adversity to derail her board exam performance. 'My father would have been proud of my Class 12 results. I appeared for the NEET exam held yesterday, but I don't expect a high score. I demand death penalty for those who murdered my father and arrest of an accused still at large,' she said. Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said, 'After losing father, Santosh Deshmukh, Vaibhavi overcame immense emotional and social challenges to score 85.13% in her exams. Her success is more than just academic — a symbol of strength, resilience, and hope.' Baramati MP Supriya Sule said, 'Vaibhavi Deshmukh, the brave daughter of the late Santosh Deshmukh of Massajog, has achieved remarkable success in her Class 12 exams under extremely adverse circumstances. Her triumph is truly inspirational. Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for her future journey.'
