A mother whose two sons were tragically killed by their violent father during a visit authorised by the courts is campaigning for a shift away from the "pro-contact" mentality within the legal system.
Claire Throssell is urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to overhaul the family justice system following a chilling Women's Aid report that shows since her children's deaths, 19 more youngsters in England and Wales have been killed by a parent or guardian known for domestic abuse, despite being granted access rights.

The Nineteen More Child Homicides study says the victims ranged from a three-week-old infant to an 11 year old child, with all but one of the perpetrators being male and 15 of the murders committed by the children's fathers. In a heart-wrenching incident back in October 2014, Claire's own children, Jack, aged 12, and Paul, aged nine, were callously killed by their father Darren Sykes, who enticed them into the attic with the promise of a new train set before setting the house ablaze.
Claire, 53, from Penistone, South Yorkshire, has expressed her despair at the government's inaction, saying: "The government hasn't learnt anything since my sons were murdered. Children are dying and they are doing nothing to stop it."
Women's Aid is now collaborating with Claire to demand the government urgently reassess the family justice system, accusing the courts of continuing to fail in safeguarding children, reports the Mirror.

According to the charity, which monitors such tragic incidents, over the past three decades, 67 children have lost their lives to individuals with a history of domestic violence.
Before her sons were tragically killed by their father, Claire had alerted Cafcass (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service) and Social Services about the danger her ex-husband posed to their children.

She said: "In my court application I clearly stated he was capable of killing Jack and Paul. He had been repeatedly violent towards me and abusive to the boys.
"Even in the Family Court he was shouting at me and couldn't contain his temper, but still the judge gave him access to my beautiful sons, and now they are dead.
"I knew the boys weren't safe with him and the hardest part is Jack and Paul knew that too. They didn't like going to visit their dad. They knew how angry he could get and would beg me not to make them go, but there was a court order in place stating they had to see their dad twice a week."

It was during one of these access visits on October 22, 2014, that Claire's ex-husband intentionally set fire to the house, after cancelling the building and contents insurance. He also died in the fire.
Claire said: "The last words Jack said, as the firefighters desperately tried to rescue him, was 'my dad did this and he did it on purpose'."
Paul died on the same night, along with his father. Jack bravely battled for his life for another five days, before succumbing to his severe burn injuries and related medical complications.

The devastating loss has made Claire resolute in her campaign for changes in family law.
Determined to eradicate domestic violence, she is waiting for a reply to her meeting request with Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood. She said: "The pro-contact culture means dangerous and violent individuals are being given access to children. There is a systematic problem in family courts that needs addressing.
"How many more children have to be killed before the government stands up and listens?" After losing her sons, Claire resolved to do her part prevent further tragedies, saying: "I vowed after my sons died that I would do everything I could to stop another child being killed at the hands of an abusive parent, but I am fighting one government after another, who aren't listening."

Claire initiated a petition against presumed contact for the Child First campaign in 2016. Surpassing 100,000 supporters, it sparked parliamentary debate.
She added: "I can never bring my sons back, but I won't stop campaigning until the government stands up and does something meaningful to protect children."
In January, Labour MP Marie Tidball championed a call to abolish the presumption of parental contact in family courts.

Claire has penned a book titled 'For My Boys', set for release in October, and said: "I will not let Jack and Paul's deaths be in vain. There isn't a single minute of a single day when I don't think about my sons. Jack should now be 23 and Paul 20."
For My Boys by Claire Throssell will be published by Mirror Books on October 9th.

"Their lives were cruelly taken far too early, and I was robbed of the memories and lives we should have shared together.

"I implore Keir Starmer to think about this and prevent another parent going through the devastating pain and heartache I am forced to endure every second of my waking life.
"Does the Labour government want its legacy to be that of one who ignored the safety of children or one that did something to save lives?".
"No one should suffer the pain that constantly rips me apart and no child should be put at risk of a terrifying and painful death."

Farar Nazeer, CEO of Women's Aid, added: "It is clear that within the family court system there remains inequality, injustice, fear and oppression.
"All too often perpetrators are shielded by a system that does not prioritise the safety of adult and child survivors.
"There also remains a disproportionate regard for the rights of the perpetrator in the family court system, often at the expense of the rights of the child."

A UK government spokesperson said: "This was a horrendous crime and our thoughts are with Claire Throssell and her family.
"While judges already have the power to restrict parental involvement in a child's life, we are reviewing the presumption of parental involvement and will publish the findings and next steps shortly."
For My Boys by Claire Throssell will be published by Mirror Books on October 9. To preorder on Amazon now go to: https://www.amazon.co.uk/My-Boys-Claire-Throssell/dp/1917439326.

Brexit a 'disaster' that 'ruined the country' - referendum 'should be repeated'

On the ninth anniversary of the day the UK voted to leave the EU, we asked readers to have their say on whether Brexit has been a success - and Mirror readers had a lot to say on the matter. Brexit has been slammed as a 'complete disaster' that 'ruined most of the country' in a poll marking nine years since the UK voted to leave the EU. Mirror readers slammed the European Union referendum, overwhelmingly voting that Brexit has failed. The UK marked nine years since the Brexit referendum on June 23 2025. The vote - which signalled the UK's intention to leave the European Union - ultimately ended a 47-year relationship with the political and economic bloc. ‌ Brits narrowly voted to leave the EU by 51.9% to 48.1%, a decision which lead to years of uncertainty across the country. A flurry of four different Conservative prime ministers ensued over a space of five years - including Liz Truss, whose premiership lasted just 49 days. ‌ Leaving the European Union has been proven to have made Brits' lives worse in at least six ways. Airport and port queues have grown drastically, food prices have spiralled out of control and small businesses have been forced to shut down. It has also become harder to work or study in the EU, music artists have been hit by a wave of barriers and NHS jobs have been left in chaos. To mark the 9th anniversary of the day the UK voted out, we asked readers to give their opinions on Brexit, with over 25,000 people voting in the poll. In response to the question 'do you think Brexit has failed?', an overwhelming 71% (18,565) voted yes, slamming the referendum as a 'disaster', while just 29% (7,520) voted no. Similarly, in response to the question 'do you feel better off since Brexit?', 78% (20,072) said no, while just 22% (20,072) said yes. We also asked 'should there be a second Brexit referendum?' and 'would you like to rejoin the EU?' - responses in both sections backed yes, with 66% (17,129) and 68% (17,572) respectively. There's still time to take the poll below - if you can't see it, click here. Results may change from those written above. ‌ What readers think In response to the poll, readers shared their thoughts in the comment section. Viking888 wrote: 'Brexit is a complete disaster. Ruined the country and most of the population.' While Bigal72 said: ' If it's been such a success why is the pound still 10% down making 40% of our food dearer.' Iron57 said: 'As far as the average person in the street is concerned, much of the pro Brexit propaganda that surrounded the leave campaign has been completely debunked. It's time for a proper debate where those wanting to remain can get their voices heard instead of having to listen to a steady stream of lies and half truths for those wanting to leave. Perhaps the remainers will also wake up this time and join the debate from the beginning rather than waiting until debate is lost.' Notanalt wrote: 'You got what you voted for, we left the EU, that the reality isn't whatever British exceptionalism fantasy you dreamed up for yourself is not the fault of anyone but you!' ‌ Suggesting Brexit is a failure, LynxVegas said: 'A vote like this should have had the agreement of every hamlet, village, town, city, county, region and country in the UK, British Isles, Commonwealth, plus all British ex-pats abroad, not just those living in the UK. A straight majority was unfair to so many people who wanted to stay in the EU. What are Brexiteers scared of? Lets have another vote.' Gozoman: 'The majority of people is not satisfied with the outcome of the previous referendum and after 5 years it should have been repeated.' However, on the opposing side of the debate, Nikgee said: 'Brexit has and hasn't failed. The main reason why Brexit failed was down to the politicians who screwed up the transition from the EU to being out.' What do you think? Do you agree with the readers' comments above? Nine years on from the Brexit referendum, h as leaving the EU has been a failure? Take our poll and have your say in the comments below.

Man duped by 'Jennifer Aniston' in 'deepfake' romance scam

Paul Davies from Southampton believed he was chatting to the Friends star. A devastated Friends superfan claims he was brutally scammed out of £200 by a fraudster posing as Jennifer Aniston. Paul Davies from Southampton believed he was chatting to the Rachel Green star on social media, before ' Jennifer ' asked him to hand over the cash so she could pay for her "Apple subscriptions" reports the Mirror. ‌ Paul claims he was bombarded with scarily realistic AI-generated videos and messages from supposed Hollywood stars, including fake clips of Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. ‌ The 43-year-old said ' Jen ' sent him her driving license as proof of her identity and he fell for it, not least because she told him she 'loved him'. Speaking to The Sun, he said: 'I've had fake videos from Jennifer Aniston saying she loves me and asking for £200. I believed it – and I paid.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The cruel scam saw him send £200 worth of non-refundable Apple gift cards to the alleged American sweetheart as Paul admitted: 'I got bitten. 'Once bitten, twice shy.' During their conversation on social media, ' Jennifer ' sent various sweet messages to Paul while also warning him not to contact Facebook because "you don't want problems". The twisted con is part of a worrying wave of deepfake, AI generated videos, which often forge someone's face, voice or entire likeness. ‌ Paul says he's been hounded by droves of deepfake videos, often claiming he's won a huge prize, endorsed by a fake celebrity. One video even showed a fake Zuckerberg declaring: 'This is not a scam - believe me' while flashing a phoney ID. 'They make it look so real,' Paul said. "It's been going on for five months. I thought someone would get in trouble for this, but they seem to be having a laugh – and getting away with it.' ‌ Paul, who admits his mental health has been affected by the scam, said he's sharing his story to protect others. It comes as another unsuspecting Facebook user was duped by a scammer pretending to be Brad Pitt. The con artist swindled a French woman out of nearly £700,000 by pretending to be the Fight Club star, despite actually living in Nigeria and never stepping foot in front of a camera. ‌ Interior designer Anne, 53, was tricked into funding a bogus cancer treatment for the so-called superstar after being sent AI-generated selfies and love messages. The sham romance dragged on for over a year, costing Anne her life savings, her marriage, and her mental health. Eventually a crack team discovered the scammer's identity, his Nigerian home, along with, sadly, 34 other victims.
