Nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2024, which were announced in February, include Mariah Carey, Phish, Outkast, Oasis, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, Joy Division/New Order, Soundgarden, the White Stripes, Joe Cocker, Bad Company, Black Crowes, Chubby Checker, and Maná.
To qualify for this year's ballot, each nominee's first single or album had to have been released in 2000 or earlier. Eight of the 14 nominees (Bad Company, The Black Crowes, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Maná, Outkast, and Phish) are on the ballot for the first time. They've all been eligible in prior years. (Chubby Checker has been eligible for the longest at 41 years.) This is the third nomination for Soundgarden, and the second for Oasis, Mariah Carey, Cyndi Lauper, White Stripes, and Joy Division/New Order.
The annual induction ceremony will take place in Los Angeles in the fall. A date for the ceremony has yet to be announced, but it typically takes place in October or November.
The unlikely combination of American Idol and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is sure to thrill Oasis' Liam Gallagher, who recently declared, 'RNR hall of fame is for WANKERS.' The musician also told The Sunday Times that the Rock Hall didn't seem to reflect rock and roll.
'As much as I love Mariah Carey and all that, I want to say: do me a favor and fuck off,' he said. 'It's like putting me in the rap hall of fame, and I don't want to be part of anything that mentally disturbed. Besides, I've done more for rock n' roll than half of them clowns on that board, so it's all a load of bollocks.'

Alice Cooper, Elton John, Judas Priest Pay Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne: 'The Whole World Is Mourning Ozzy Tonight'

Some of the biggest names in the music and entertainment industry are paying tribute to Ozzy Osbourne after his family confirmed the news of his death earlier Tuesday. Osbourne died at 76 following years of health issues, just weeks after he played his final show in Birmingham, United Kingdom, where he reunited with Black Sabbath. 'He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time,' Osbourne's family said. Justin Bieber's 'Swag': A Silver Lining for the No. 2 Chart Debut 'The whole world is mourning Ozzy tonight,' Alice Cooper said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. 'Over his long career, he earned immense respect among his peers and from fans around the world as an unmatched showman and cultural icon. I always saw Ozzy as a cross between the prince of darkness, which is the persona his fans saw, and the court jester. 'That was the side that his family and friends saw,' Cooper continued. 'He was and will continue to be a rock n roll legend. Rock n roll is a family and a fraternity. When we lose one of our own, it bleeds. I wish I would have gotten to know my brother Ozzy better. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and the rest of the Ozzy brood — our prayers are with you tonight. A titanic boulder has crashed, but rock will roll on.' In a statement, Mick Jones of Foreigner said he and Osbourne had 'been through it all together since way back — good times, writing songs, having a laugh until dawn.' 'He always had a wicked sense of humor and a kind heart. They live and sing amongst us and leave as we met them…a star. My deepest heartfelt condolences to Sharon and the family, who were his rock. It meant a lot, that night we both got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame together—hard to believe, really. Just glad we got to share that.' Elton John paid homage on Instagram, calling the Prince of Darkness 'a dear friend and a huge trailblazer who secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods — a true legend.' 'He was also one of the funniest people I've ever met,' John wrote Tuesday. 'I will miss him dearly. To Sharon and the family, I send my condolences and love.' The original vocalist of the iconic English rock band Black Sabbath, Osbourne had a sprawling music career with the group that led to his own successful solo career with other 100 million records sold worldwide. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Black Sabbath in 2006, then again for a second time as a solo artist in 2024. In a statment to THR, fellow metal icons Judas Priest said that 'our hearts are broken like millions around the world — words can't express the love and loss we are all feeling.''Sharon — may God surround you and your beautiful family with love, peace, and — you will never leave us. Your music is eternal. God blesses you now more than ever, after you blessed us all through your magnificent life.' Fellow English band Duran Duran paid their respects to the English star on Instagram as well. 'What can you say about Ozzy? Whatever it is, it's in a Brummie accent,' the band said. 'Hard to imagine a world without him, Ozzy brought so much joy, humor and raw power to the world, in a life of many chapters. Ozzy was a cat who had way more than nine lives. Thanks for the ride Ozzy, love from the other Brummies.' Jack White posted an old photo of Osbourne on Instagram, along with with a caption that simply read 'he made it.' Former lead singer of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, also wrote on X: 'Farewell Ozzy … what a journey … sail on up there .. finally at peace .. you truly changed the planet of rock!' Billy Idol shared a snapshot of himself with Osbourne from the night the latter singer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last fall. 'I'm so glad that I could be part of his solo induction into the @rockhall last October that I got to honor his achievements in the light of his passing,' he wrote on Instagram. 'Ozzy embodied the spirit of rock 'n' roll, and he performed right to the end as we all saw most recently at the back to the beginning concert. My condolences to Sharon Jack Kelly, and the whole family. My heart goes out to you.' Jason Momoa, who hosted Black Sabbath's final 'Back to the Beginning' concert in early July, wrote on Instagram: 'Love you @ozzyosbourne All my aloha @sharonosbourne and ohana. So grateful. RIP.' Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who served as musical director for Osbourne's final show, shared a photo with the late singer on Instagram, writing, 'Good bless you Ozzy.' Metallica's X account also shared an image with Osbourne with a heartbroken emoji. Zane Lowe also shared a photo with the Black Sabbath singer, writing, 'To have lived in a time… Rest in peace Ozzy.' David Draiman, of the heavy metal band Disturbed, wrote on Instagram: 'Goodbye my dear teacher… …a father to us all. …my friend. I love you @ozzyosbourne and I will miss you terribly.' Former MTV VJ Matt Pinfield took to Instagram to share a photo of a gold cane with the word 'Ozzy' on it. 'Ozzy I will always love and miss you,' Pinfield wrote. Thank you for this beautiful thoughtful gift and all the life changing music.' Read more tributes in honor of Osbourne below. Remembering Ozzy Osbourne: How ‘The Osbournes' made him more palatable for awards voters

Music superstar. Reality TV personality. Father. Ozzy Osbourne is dead at age 76 following a prolonged battle with Parkinson's disease, according to a statement released from his family on Tuesday. He leaves behind a lasting legacy in the public eye and on the awards front. "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning," the family said. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time." More from Gold Derby 'Freakier Friday' director on Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan's bond on and off set and why the body-swap sequel is 'a fantasy-slash-nightmare' Burning Oscars questions heading into Venice, TIFF, and Telluride Born Dec. 3, 1948, in Marston Green, Warwickshire, England, Osbourne rose to fame in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath. He departed the group in 1979 due to substance-abuse issues, but continued to reunite with them through the decades. Osbourne launched a solo career in 1980, eventually releasing 13 successful studio albums. Dubbed the "Prince of Darkness," he rose to infamy in 1981 when he bit the head off a dove after meeting with music executives in Los Angeles. Then in 1982, he bit the head off a bat, which he allegedly thought was a rubber toy. Osbourne's controversial early career was almost entirely ignored by major awards bodies. Midway through his career, he won two Grammys for Best Metal Performance for "I Don't Want To Change The World" (1994) and "Iron Man" (2000). It wasn't until MTV's celeb-reality show The Osbournes debuted in 2002 that he became much more palatable to awards voters. The Osbournes was a docuseries loosely inspired by 1950s sitcoms, with Ozzy fitting into the role of the oddball dad, Sharon Osbourne as the kooky mom, and Kelly Osbourne and Jack Osbourne as the rebellious teens. Ozzy went viral — or, at least, the 2002 version of viral — every time he mumbled something outlandish, and for his frequent guttural shouts of "Sharon!" The reality show followed the foul-mouthed family members as they moved into their expensive Beverly Hills home, and America was transfixed every time they verbally clashed with each other or those around them. In one classic scene, the Osbournes threw a ham across the fence at their neighbors. "This is a picture of his wife's c--t," Sharon laughed maniacally. Lucy and Desi, they were not. Following the enormous success of The Osbournes, which ran for four seasons on MTV between 2002 and 2005, Ozzy Osbourne became a beloved member of society and was suddenly no longer seen as the standoffish musician who bit the heads off winged creatures. He was finally inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — twice — first with Black Sabbath in 2006, and then as a solo artist in 2024. Would those inductions have ever happened if Osbourne's personality hadn't first received a massive overhaul in front of millions of TV fans? The artist also received 10 additional Grammy bids in the post-The Osbournes era, winning for Best Metal Performance for "God Is Dead?" (2014) and "Degradation Rules" (2023), plus Best Rock Album for "Patient Number 9" (2023). And he was even awarded the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award. The Osbournes itself was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards, winning for Best Non-Fiction Program (Reality). Since Ozzy and family weren't producers, they didn't get to share in that victory. But he did claim a surfboard at the 2002 Teen Choice Awards for Choice Personality. Buoyed by the success of the TV show, Osbourne received his long-awaited star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame about a month after it premiered. The star can be found in front of Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum — a fitting location that serves as a testament to his truly unbelievable life. What turned out to be Osbourne's final on-stage performance took place on July 5 at Villa Park. This milestone "Back to the Beginning" concert, shared with rock giants Metallica and Guns N' Roses, featured Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward singing with Osbourne for the first time in 20 years. Ozzy Osbourne is survived by Sharon, Kelly, Jack, and their third child, Aimee. He also had three children from his previous marriage to Thelma Riley.
