Kaizer Chiefs contract twist: Matlou trains without a deal?
Although the club reportedly agreed in principle to retain Matlou for another season, the 27-year-old has not put pen to paper.
'Amakhosi agreed in principle to retain Matlou for at least another year in coach Nasreddine Nabi's roster for the new campaign,' a source revealed, pointing to a puzzling delay in formalising the deal.
Despite likely advice from his representatives to avoid international travel without an official contract, Matlou still joined the squad in Europe and even celebrated his birthday while on tour. His decision to honour the gentleman's agreement rather than chase other offers shows clear loyalty, though it could also leave him vulnerable if the deal collapses.
Matlou arrived at Naturena three years ago from Moroka Swallows, tipped to become a creative force in the midfield under former coach Arthur Zwane. However, recurring injuries derailed those expectations. His fortunes only shifted when incoming head coach Nasreddine Nabi personally requested his retention. Chiefs responded by activating a one-year option to extend his contract.
That extension has now lapsed.
Chiefs have yet to present Matlou with a formal offer. Despite being technically out of contract, Matlou continues to train with the Glamour Boys. Banking on the club to honour their verbal commitment.
As of now, Matlou remains an unofficial member of the squad. Creating a potentially awkward situation should negotiations stall further.
Without an official agreement in place, Matlou's future at Kaizer Chiefs hangs in the balance.
