Coming soon: a hidden 3am cocktail contender for 2025's best new bar

The Age09-07-2025
Finally, Brisbane's drinks scene is beginning to evolve.
A few years ago, the city boasted a bunch of cracking cocktail bars – Death & Taxes, Maker, The Gresham, Dr Gimlette, Savile Row – but not much else. While Brisbane's restaurant scene diversified, our smaller boozers felt stuck in a low gear, new operators seemingly unable, or unwilling, to take a swing on fresh ideas.
But then came Frog's Hollow and Alice and Barry Parade Public House, and wine bars suddenly got both more freewheeling and serious, with the opening of Dark Red, Milquetoast and Dark Red's new sister venue, Dark Blue. All have a unique angle or location, or a combination of the two.
Now comes The Alligator Club, a New Orleans-inspired basement bolthole due to open in the Valley in early August.

Inside Jodhi Meares' new $4.1m Byron Bay hinterland home

Don't miss out on the headlines from Celebrity Life. Followed categories will be added to My News. Jodhi Meares has opened up about the real reason she left Sydney for Byron Bay, and the private life she has created for herself in the hinterland. In a new interview with Stellar, the fashion mogul and ex-wife of James Packer admits she was never comfortable in the spotlight and is 'definitely a behind the scenes person'. 'I'm a true introvert. I like to be able to watch people. I find people really interesting. 'Being in the public eye wrecked that a little bit,' Meares told Stellar. Late last year, Meares purchased a four-bedroom, Modernist-inspired home – which features an avocado, citrus, banana and papaw orchard, at Brooklet. The property is located inland between Ballina and Byron Bay in the NSW Northern Rivers region – and was purchased for a reported $4.1 million. Jodhi Meares is on the cover of today's Stellar. 'I don't get bored and I don't get lonely. I suffer from other things, but I don't suffer from those things,' Meares said. 'Sometimes I have to ask myself, 'How many days has it been? I need to just go somewhere and speak to another human …'' The former Australia's Next Top Model host and Tigerlily founder also made a surprising confession about her time as a model, saying she 'never really loved having my photos taken'. 'It's been a means to an end. But I felt very lucky to be able to do it because I wasn't sure what I was going to do when I was young. 'And school and I didn't get along that well.' 'I don't get bored …' Jodhi Meares on her new life. Picture: Don Arnold/WireImage In the Stellar cover story, Meares also reflected on interviewing Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson – who stars in a new campaign for Meares' activewear brand, The Upside – for Stellar earlier this year. 'She's such a phenomenal woman. Elle doesn't have to do these things. I thought it was just very special,' Meares said. 'It was very beautiful, really touching that she was able to do that.' Nothing held back: Lorien Testard's music for Clair Obscur

On this episode of the Game Show, Meena Shamaly explores the massive game score of the 2025 smash hit, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, in addition to an extended conversation with the composer Lorien Testard, beyond the broadcast, that explores the stories behind the music, the collaborations that bring it to life, and how he created the soundtrack of his dreams When finally presented with the opportunity to write his first ever game score, composer Lorien Testard grabbed on with both hands to take players on the ride of their lives. Across a soundtrack album of more than eight hours, Testard put his heart and soul into every inch of this score, with themes and compositions that explore every possible emotional element of this story. His numerous melodies accompany the titular expedition, as they travel from their French-inspired city of Lumière to try and stop a creature known as The Paintress from enacting her annual erasure of souls, known as the Gommage. The first part of the title, Clair Obscur , takes its name from chiaroscuro - the contrast of light and darkness in visual art, especially painting. This concept is at the heart of the game's story, characterisation, and visual style, driving every composition by Testard. As dark, heavy, and heartbreaking as some moments can be (the "obscur"), there is always lightness and levity to be found (the "clair"). Joining the composer on this score is vocalist and co-composer Alice Duport-Percier, who becomes a central voice to the score as she brings the lyrics of this world to life. Testard also features the Orchestre Curieux (the Curious Orchestra), a chamber ensemble led by Daniel Sicard, as well as several guest musicians to expand the score's sonic palette. Actor Ben Starr also makes his tender singing debut in this story, and vocalists Victor Borba and Axelle Verner bringing the heat to some of its biggest confrontations. With Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 , Lorien Testard has cemented himself as a talent impossible to ignore.

Western suburbs venue launches fiery new outdoor experience

Cottesloe restaurant Indigo Oscar is turning up the heat this winter with the launch of a South American-inspired outdoor BBQ experience. Sunday Fuego is a new addition to the restaurant's annual Aventuras Latinas series, and will take place weekly from 12pm to 4pm, with the picturesque terrace coming alive with the sounds and smoky sizzle of South American flavours. Guests will have the chance to witness the live-cooking experience, with charred meats, bold marinades, punchy side dishes, and a rotating menu of regional dishes on the menu each month. A taste of Brazil inspires the July menu, which includes Shark Bay king prawns, served with red chimichurri, and a free-range pork rib rack, drizzled with a spiced guava glaze. Not limiting the spice to Sundays, the Aventuras Latinas menu continues throughout the week with Brazilian favourites, including the iconic Feijoada making an appearance this month. In August, the menu will take guests north from Brazil to Puerto Rico, before heading back south to Argentina in September with smoky asado. In addition to the a la carte offering, guests can opt for the Taste of menu – a selection of small plates inspired by the Latin American country of the month, designed for groups of up to eight, at $75 per person.
