
The great American classic we've been misreading for 100 years
On the other hand, there are parts of Gatsby that feel so fresh and modern that they could have been written yesterday. In our own moment, as the world's richest man takes a hatchet to the federal government for sport, one of Gatsby 's most celebrated lines about the very wealthy feels resoundingly true: 'They were careless people … They smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.'
There's something reassuring about knowing that Gatsby is the book we've chosen to put in classrooms and movie theaters, to make it one of those culture touchstones that everyone more or less knows at least a little.
But Gatsby did not become an immediate institution in American life, and we don't know it as well as we think we do. Gatsby is a much more complicated book than its pop culture footprint suggests. It's big enough to survive all those turgid high school essays about color symbolism and the American dream, all those drinking parties with girls in backwards headbands, all those mediocre movies and bad plays.
Here's the story of how The Great Gatsby has endured — and why we keep misreading it.
As laid out by Matthew J. Bruccoli in the definitive Fitzgerald biography, Some Sort of Epic Grandeur , F. Scott Fitzgerald set out to fulfill his promise as one of the most promising novelists of his generation with The Great Gatsby in 1925.
His second book, 1922's The Beautiful and Damned , had been considered a letdown. Readers agreed it was beautifully written, but felt nonetheless that it didn't quite live up to the standard set in his acclaimed debut, This Side of Paradise . Critics began to wonder if Fitzgerald wasn't a man 'with a gift for expression without very many ideas to express.'
To write The Great Gatsby , Fitzgerald drew upon his own experience as the rejected poor suitor to multiple rich girls. He was from a middle-class family, but the fancy boarding school education that led him to Princeton had him rubbing elbows with the wealthy.
In college Fitzgerald dated a society debutante, whose father warned him that 'poor boys shouldn't think of marrying rich girls.' When he courted his eventual wife Zelda, also a debutante from money, he was an unemployed and unpublished writer. Zelda refused to marry him until he had a source of income, and Fitzgerald responded by building his own legend as a handsome, romantic, hard-living celebrity novelist, gallivanting from party to party across New York City.
These events provide the loose skeleton of the plot of The Great Gatsby : Poor young James Gatz falls in love with the glamorous socialite Daisy, but doesn't have enough money to marry her. Gatz spends the next five years pursuing various illicit money-making schemes until he is as wealthy as an emperor, transforming himself into the mythical figure of Jay Gatsby, a man he hopes will be rich and polished enough to win Daisy's hand. What Gatsby doesn't understand is that Daisy's old-money breeding demands more than just vulgar, splashy wealth.
That last element of the story comes from Fitzgerald's own ambivalence about wealth and what it did to people, and what he really thought about the old-money families he lived so closely beside.

He himself ran through his money as fast as he possibly could; he was well-paid for his work, but his debts piled higher and higher, and he kept having to write commercial short stories he thought were bad in order to maintain his extravagant lifestyle. Bruccoli reads Fitzgerald's inability to manage his finances as an expression of his contempt for both money and those who had it: 'If he could waste it,' Bruccoli writes, 'then it didn't own him.' If that was Fitzgerald's thought, the idea didn't exactly work out. 'The inevitable result,' Bruccoli concludes, 'was that he was in bondage to it after all because he had to earn the money he was squandering.'
Gatsby 's attitudes toward wealth are similarly ambivalent. Money is what generates Gatsby 's famous glitz and glamour, the parties full of jazz and cocktails and fireworks that sound so fun that people keep trying to replicate them a hundred years later. It is what makes Daisy, Gatsby's lost love, so alluring: that her voice is 'full of money.' Yet money is also what corrupts Daisy, what makes it possible for her to accidentally kill a poor woman and drive away from the accident without stopping. Money, in this novel, makes people careless.
Gatsby is a fraught, vexed book, all the more lovely because it is so ambivalent. When it came out in 1925, it was considered a masterpiece. T.S. Eliot called Gatsby 'the first step American fiction has taken since Henry James.' It made Fitzgerald's reputation.
It also arguably ruined his life. He spent the next nine years working to write a book that could be its equal, descending ever more inexorably into alcoholism as he did. He would publish two more novels — 1934's Tender Is the Night and the posthumous The Love of the Last Tycoon in 1940 — but neither of them would be as celebrated as The Great Gatsby . As the Depression continued, Fitzgerald came to be dismissed as a relic of the boom time, a chronicler of the rich whose moment was long gone and whose continued alcoholism was all too apt a fate.
As Fitzgerald's star faded, so too did Gatsby 's reputation. In the last month of his life, before he died in 1940 at the age of 44, Fitzgerald sold only seven copies of the book and made $13.13 in royalties.
Like many great artists, Fitzgerald enjoyed a critical reappraisal almost as soon as he was dead. His publishers packaged the incomplete Love of the Last Tycoon with a reprint of The Great Gatsby , a canny move that reminded the literary world just how great Fitzgerald was at his best and primed the larger public to remember his name.
It took World War II for Gatsby to become an institution, when the US government began shipping small paperback editions of popular novels out to the troops for morale. Gatsby was one of the books chosen for the program, with 155,000 copies distributed across the armed services. Now, the book was not just well-regarded but also inescapable. It would take decades more, however, before Gatsby reached the place where most people meet it today: the classroom.
For a long time, American high school English classes didn't teach much American literature. All the great stuff was by Europeans, the thinking went, and American literature was so simple and straightforward that it simply wasn't worth teaching. The increased patriotism of World War II got more American novels into the classroom, but even then, they tended to be the authors of the so-called American Renaissance of the early 19th century: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau.
Over the course of the midcentury, however, American schools became invested in 'new criticism,' a form of literary analysis that focuses on analyzing prose at the level of the sentence and the symbol rather than focusing on the social context in which a book was written. Schools also became more interested in giving their students books that felt newer and more relatable; perhaps even books written in the 20th century. The Great Gatsby presented itself as a solution to a number of these problems.
Gatsby is short and its sentences are straightforward and easy to read, making it less intimidating for teen readers than a brick like Moby-Dick . Its central theme is the inaccessibility of the American dream, which makes it nicely relevant to an American literature unit. And it is riddled with the kind of color symbolism that high school teachers love to point out: the green light that represents both lost love and money; the white dresses that suggest Daisy's apparent purity; the looming blue eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg, watching over everything like God in an advertisement. It is in many ways a perfect pedagogical text.
By 1993, The Great Gatsby was one of the top 10 most assigned books in high school English classes across the US, and it remains a mainstay of the high school curriculum.
Yet as time accumulates between us and Fitzgerald, his prose becomes harder for students to read, and some of the pure pleasures of Gatsby can disappear. It's hard to graduate high school without having encountered Gatsby in some form or other, but if your sole focus as a student reader is on tracking every time the words red, white, and blue appear in the text, you might have less time to focus on the idea that wealth and class corrupt their owners. What students know most of all about The Great Gatsby now is that it certainly says something about the impossibility of the American dream, without necessarily knowing how scathing Fitzgerald's treatment of that dream is — an ironic problem in our own era of broligarchs who love to move fast and break our things.
If many of us are missing the point of Gatsby when we sit in our English classrooms, most attempts to adapt the canonical book for the stage and screen also falter.
Most Gatsby adaptations — and in fact, much of our culture — is most interested in the part of the novel about partying in a flapper outfit: the glamour of the soirees, the kick of the cocktails, the silhouette of Gatsby in his tailored suits and Daisy dancing the Charleston with marceled curls. We tend to ignore what happens to Daisy and Gatsby after the glamour has been torn away from them, when they become shabby.
Since Gatsby entered the public domain in 2021, New York has hosted multiple theatrical adaptations. Both The Great Gatsby , a glitzy musical, and The Gatsby Experience , a Sleep-No-More -style immersive experience, played all of the love stories with a schmaltzy sentimentality that asks the audience to break its heart for not only Gatsby and Daisy but also for cynical, dubiously heterosexual Nick and Jordan. Then there's Baz Luhrmann's 2013 film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which stages Gatsby as a hectic and hedonistic swirl of parties and violence.
Jack Clayton's 1974 adaptation, starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, comes closest to finding the balance, pitting dingy '70s grays and a naturalistic camera against Redford at his most shiningly charismatic as Gatsby. Even Clayton, though, is defeated by the story's sensational and highly symbolic ending, which defeats all attempts to shoot it straightforwardly.
The Gatsby adaptation that has moved me most, the one that is the best argument of Gatsby's relevance, is the Elevator Repair Service Company's Gatz , which played its final New York performance at the Public Theater last fall. Only Gatz seems to understand why we've kept reading Gatsby for so long, or at the very least, the best reason we have for continuing to read Gatsby for so long: because it is simply a very beautiful book.
Gatz strips away all of Gatsby 's spectacle. It takes place in an anonymous '90s office with cigarette stains on the faux-wood paneling and cardboard bankers boxes littering the floor. One worker, unable to get his computer to boot up, happens upon an old copy of Gatsby stuffed in the back of a desk and begins to read.
It is more beautiful than pink linen suits, more beautiful than Lana Del Rey singing a sad song, more beautiful than a stage full of chorus girls in sequins and beads.
Over the course of the next eight hours, Gatz 's Nick reads the whole of Great Gatsby out loud, as his office brings the story to life around him. The desks get pushed together and pulled apart to become cars, tea tables, dance floors. Drunken revelers strew old paperwork around the place when they get rowdy. And Gatsby — well, Gatsby is as unglamorous as James Gatz was before he ever put on a white linen suit: a middle-aged middle manager with a bald spot in bad khakis.
Across this unprepossessing set, from these unassuming figures, Fitzgerald's language rolls out in great golden tides, so beautiful as to overwhelm you. It is more beautiful than pink linen suits, more beautiful than Lana Del Rey singing a sad song, more beautiful than a stage full of chorus girls in sequins and beads. The gift Gatz gives you is simply to force you to sit still long enough for them to show you how beautiful The Great Gatsby is.
Gatsby has survived this long because of a series of accidents: because a paperback edition fit well into the pockets of soldiers during WWII, because it meshes nicely with the educational goals of the standard 11th-grade English syllabus, because it's fun to film and stage all those Jazz Age party sequences. But Gatsby makes the best argument for its own continued relevance when we strip those circumstances and accidents away and allow the text, shining as bright as the green light at the end of Daisy's dock, to show us all what it can do. The Most American Wrestler
The world of professional wrestling includes many types of characters: the tough guy; the masked acrobat; the silent killer; the undersize underdog; the wild man; the high-flying heartthrob; the sex god. Over the course of a pro-wrestling event, which may last a few hours and feature several matches, these roles work in tandem as a type of variety show, giving fans many flavors of entertainment. But over the past half century, the headlining star—the one whose name tops the marquee, and who is paid the most money—has usually been someone like Hulk Hogan. Hogan himself was uncommonly tall, blessed with biceps bigger than a baby's head, a booming voice, dozens of repeatable catchphases, and a 1,000-watt personality that could be felt from the cheap seats. Both visually and in his affectations, he was what you might come up with if you were to ask a hundred strangers on the street, or ChatGPT, to draw the prototypical 'pro wrestler.' Hogan, who died yesterday at the age of 71, is by many objective metrics the most famous pro wrestler of all time. Pro wrestling, as entertainment, has existed since at least the early 20th century. But in the 1980s, Hogan popularized a brash and cartoonish style that became swiftly synonymous with the form, at least in America. When the promoter Vince McMahon built up the company now known as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which transformed the business by becoming the first to broadcast its wrestling show across the country, Hogan was his agent of change—a muscle-bound pitchman who sold a patriotic vision of strength, heroism, and integrity. (As his theme song went: 'I am a real American / Fight for the rights of every man.') Hogan's superpower was his pure conviction; he embodied outlandishness without a trace of irony, imprinting himself onto the hearts and minds of millions of people, many of them children who would carry their adoration into adulthood. Most pro-wrestling fans will freely admit that the entertainment is at least a little ridiculous. We're talking about half-naked men and women in leather underwear and fake tans who pretend to fight one another, their beefs based on storylines as simplistic as I don't like you. But the unbelievability is part of the point. Pro wrestling offers a digestible fantasy in which good guys usually triumph and villains get their comeuppance. The bad guys aren't acquitted on technicalities or rewarded for their deviousness; they're punched in the mouth, before a roaring crowd of thousands. When Hogan became wrestling's brightest star, this was his essential promise—he was not just a do-gooder who said the right things about loving God and eating your vitamins; he also almost always won. He was like a one-man Harlem Globetrotters, a dazzling showman guaranteed to come out on top. He remained beloved even when he became a bad guy, in the 1990s, popularizing a new archetype of 'cool scoundrel' that upended the entire business by making it unclear which side of the good-versus-evil conflict fans should root for. In his case, it was obvious: You rooted for Hulk Hogan. This success brought millions of dollars, worldwide fame, acting roles, a few restaurants—even as Hogan himself remained something of a cipher. Today, WWE produces hours of behind-the-scenes documentary programming in which its wrestlers speak as themselves. But in that earlier era, when it was not yet publicly acknowledged that the entertainment was predetermined, men like Hogan were careful to stay in character, lest they be judged as phonies. The WWE admitted that the wrestling wasn't 'real' as far back as 1989, but still, Hogan never quite shed the role of 'Hulk Hogan'—never casually transitioned into being known by his birth name, Terry Bollea. Even his reality show, which purported to depict his everyday family life, was called Hogan Knows Best. (His ex-wife Linda; his son, Nick; and his daughter, Brooke, all adopted 'Hogan' as their public surname, too.) Hogan generally seemed to be living out some version of his wrestling identity. In a courtroom, he might admit that 'Hogan' was a character he played for a living; still, he would say this while wearing his trademark bandanna and bleached-blond goatee. As the years went on and he spent more time out of the wrestling ring—his last match was in 2012, but he hadn't been a regular performer since 2002—he extended the logic of his character into real life. When in 2013 he sued Gawker for publishing a tape that showed him having sex with his friend's wife (with the friend's consent), and eventually won a $140 million judgment, he dominated the court of public opinion by portraying the website as just his latest adversary to overcome. (That the behind-the-scenes circumstances of his lawsuit were more complicated didn't matter much.) When audio of Hogan using wildly racist invective, from that same tape, was leaked in 2015, he was excommunicated from WWE—'It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for having done it,' he said in a statement —but negotiated a triumphant return to its programming just a few years later. He was sometimes down, but never out; he behaved as though the fans would always be there for him, and they usually were. This ability to wave away the past and shamelessly present himself for renewed applause was an especially American trait. Like a carnival barker or a veteran televangelist, Hogan wielded his charisma as a cudgel against all criticism. The sordid, tasteless incidents never dinged him for long. Whatever happened then did not matter as much as what was happening now. If he could present as the Hulkster, his muscles rippling and his bandanna tightly strapped on, he could pretend to be the conquering hero even when the truth was more troublesome, more dreary, more human. In pro wrestling, the ability to stay in character is highly valuable; in real life, it's sort of obnoxious. (Try affecting the loudest version of your personality, all of the time, and see how many of your loved ones stick around.) But if your paying customers don't care, there's little downside to maintaining the illusion for as long as possible. Today, America is inundated with public figures who loudly insist they are one thing when they're really something else, who stick around mostly because they refuse to go away. We are surrounded by Hulk Hogans, boisterous personalities who commit to their bit as they try to sell something and unabashedly ignore the truth. Even by the standards of his wrestling peers, Hogan's ability to stretch the truth was something else. And his belief in himself was rarely shaken; no matter the occasion, he could always snap into character and launch into a bravura monologue. Slowly, though, the covenant between Hogan and those paying customers began to crack. The racist tapes were a major blow, even after WWE brought him back; several Black wrestlers refused to accept his apology, calling him insincere. The ugliness of his remarks is still shocking to revisit today—for many fans, they will be his enduring legacy. And his public alliance with President Donald Trump, which included an absurd pro-wrestling-style speech at last year's Republican National Convention ('I know tough guys but let me tell you something, brother, Donald Trump is the toughest of them all'), was just as polarizing. When Hogan made his last WWE appearance earlier this year, on the Netflix debut of the company's Monday Night Raw, he was resoundingly booed by the Los Angeles crowd. It was an ignoble final interaction with an audience he had helped create, though hardly surprising, given his recent reputation. Even so, he was willing to bet on being forgiven: This year he co-founded the wrestling company Real American Freestyle, whose first show is scheduled for August. Ticket sales were soft, and many pro-wrestling fans derided the concept; still, he was going for it one more time, committing to a character who was no longer believable to anyone but himself.

His writing is filled with clear and interesting thought experiments, allowing anyone to grasp his theories, which span from philosophy, cognitive science and evolutionary biology to farming, sailing, and religion. Any curious person can find a relevant topic relating to their life in Dennett's vast body of work, and it will likely have them questioning whether they actually understood the topic in the first place. During his acceptance speech and subsequent lecture at the ICCS conference, Clark defined the Dennettian term of 'strange inversion' using the example of a pub that is known for its Guinness. We may think the pub's reputation is due to the exceptional Guinness pours, but in reality, the Guinness is exceptional because of the pub's reputation. More Lecture at Vitsentzos Kornaros Cinema and Theatre, Heraklion, Crete. July 5, 2025. Theodore McDarrah Clark was not shy in his admiration of Dennett. He called Dennett his 'major philosophical influence.' Clark continues, 'He was the first philosopher's voice that I had some affinity with. It seemed to me like a way of taking whatever you can from science, philosophy, or from anywhere else and using it to think about whatever you want to think about. That was so liberating. That's why I want to do philosophy.' Dennett was a long way from the French literature of Camus and Sartre that Clark studied as a young undergraduate, but, in his words, Dennett 'hijacked me.' Clark was far from the only person who felt the impact of Dennett's work at the ICCS conference. Many of the participating philosophers, cognitive scientists, entrepreneurs, and neuropsychologists had known Dennett for decades, maintaining a relationship far beyond professional. Moreover, the ICCS conference was itself an instantiation of Dennett; it combined disciplines and invited people outside of academia. This was intentional. Dmitry Volkov, a philosopher, CEO of the Social Discovery Group (SDG), and ICCS co-founder, is more familiar with Dennett's work than almost anyone. Volkov read Dennett's 1991 book Consciousness Explained, and 'thought it was really wrong.' According to Volkov, 'he was saying that language is basically the prerequisite for consciousness. So that meant he was denying consciousness in all the animals and denying consciousness in babies. I thought that was totally wrong, so I decided to tell him he's wrong.' After that first meeting, Volkov and Dennett became close, and the former eventually went on to write Boston's Zombie , one of the most comprehensive surveys of Dennett's theories of consciousness available. Like Dennett, Volkov is much more than just a philosopher. His philosophical life came after his tenure as a leader in the tech world at SDG. Still, he will be the first to acknowledge the profound impact that philosophy, especially Dennett's philosophy, has had on his leadership style. As we will see, Dennett's philosophical strategies can be directly translated to successful leadership tactics. Here are the three most important strategies. Understand First, Criticize Second When Volkov introduced himself to Dennett and immediately criticized his work, there were no hard feelings between them. On the contrary, Dennett welcomed the discussion. Importantly, it was a discussion, not a lecture. How do we know this? It is the only way Dennett would have engaged in the first place. Throughout his career, Dennett held a guiding principle: before stating a criticism, you must re-express or repeat back the point you plan to criticize in such a way that the person who initially made the point wishes she said it how you did. This proves that you understand. This may date back to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's golden rule. According to the 18th-century English writer, 'Until you understand a writer's ignorance, presume yourself ignorant of his understanding.' A business leader would do well to adopt this approach. Expressing that you understand a plan or policy before criticizing and offering an alternative proposal will make your counter significantly stronger. Finding Lingua Franca Dennett believed that philosophy is a discipline mediator. For Volkov, this is a crucial aspect of the success of both the ICCS and his business. Regarding the ICCS, 'we have computer scientists, neuroscientists, sociologists, anthropologists, we have different types of experts in different fields, and somebody needs to bridge the gap between the different languages of their domains.' This is the work for Clark and the other ICCS philosophers. The same is true for business leaders. With client-facing roles, more removed engineers, and positions in between all speaking different vernaculars, a lingua franca must be found. It is the leader's responsibility to refine the language and solidify the terminology for cross-departmental understanding. This will unify the employees. Furthermore, Volkov points out that this 'will also allow you to articulate the overall goals of your business in a way that is accessible to all team members. Without clear goals, then you cannot lead.' Challenge Perceptions Dennett's philosophy is full of strange inversions. His philosophical investigations start with some dogmas that are completely torn down by the end. According to Volkov, this is also how a successful business ought to begin. 'If you start a business with the default assumptions, you're likely going to build something that already exists. You're not going to be that special.' Conversely, if you begin with a contrarian view, you know you will be different from the others. We are beginning to see that Andy Clark and future winners of the Dennett Prize showcase just the tip of the iceberg of Dennett's vast impact.
