Nate Diaz wants title to complete UFC legacy; roasts promotion's current lack of star power
Nate Diaz wants to give it one more run in the UFC to chase gold.
Diaz (21-13 MMA, 16-11 UFC) walked away from the promotion after a submission victory over Tony Ferguson at UFC 279 in September 2022 to open himself to other opportunities away from the Las Vegas-based MMA promotion.
After leaving the fight promotion he called home for nearly 15 years, Diaz produced mixed results in the boxing ring, losing a unanimous decision to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in August 2023 and winning a majority nod against fellow UFC veteran Jorge Masvidal in July 2024.
Now, Diaz wants to return to the UFC because he doesn't view his legacy with the promotion as complete, even though he believes very few can compare.
'The legacy – I don't think about it as done,' Diaz said in a video posted to the Full Violence YouTube channel. '… I think it's underrated, and I think there's like f*cking – I think I left more of an impact than a lot of these f*cking, anybody has, really. I mean, Conor (McGregor) has in a way, and then you get like, my brother did – but all that sh*t gets forgotten about too. It can go away because you ain't getting credit to begin with anyway. You might as well keep that sh*t going forever. That's why I plan on fighting forever.'
Diaz has been a fan-favorite ever since Season 5 of 'The Ultimate Fighter' in 2007. His fight style and persona, along with his brother Nick, created a cult-like following in the MMA world. The Diaz Brothers were a different breed, and generated elevated of interest in their fights, no matter the results.
That's something Diaz believes he would bring back to the table on one last chase for gold, if that opportunity comes. He believes the current roster is lacking transcendent star power.
'Well, everybody's boring right now, so I'm trying to do other sh*t for the moment,' Diaz said. 'But like, I want to go back and get a UFC title. I don't want to fight for nothing, you know? I want to fight for something. … It's about buzz and who's poppin' and who's doing something. Right now, there's nobody doing sh*t in the UFC.'
If Diaz were to get a call to come back to the UFC, he knows he wants to return at welterweight, but isn't sure who he would match up against.
'Nobody,' Diaz said. 'That's why I'm not in there right now, you know what I'm saying? I'm watching. I'm hoping for something. … There's no buzz, nobody's doing sh*t. There's nobody to fight, everybody is wack. Every single body in boxing and MMA.'

Lima's striking reminded me of a slightly more dynamic and polished version of Thomas Almeida's striking when he was first stepping onto the UFC stage and has since demonstrated his underrated ground game. I'll be curious to see what kind of improvements Talbott was able to make to his defensive wrestling and tactics since his first pro defeat, but I think that the takedowns will be a big back-pocket option for Lima down the stretch. Welterweight Christopher Ewert found this out the hard way. Ewert was supposed to step in to face Jackson McVey on the UFC 317 undercard. However, Ewert weighed in 10 pounds over the 170-pound limit. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) UFC CEO Dana White and his leadership group aren't going to tolerate things like this from a fighter making their promotional debut—unless they've already built up a name, a reputation, and a rabid fanbase that travels well. That's not the case with Ewert. He has been impressive during his career. He's a perfect 7-0, most recently having won back-to-back fights with Fury FC. Still, it's likely the UFC wasn't overjoyed with Ewert's weight miss resulting in yet another fight being pulled from the International Fight Week show. The damage here is twofold. Not only did Ewert lose what could've been a life-changing opportunity, but he also disrupted McVey's momentum. McVey is also an undefeated prospect who has proven to be a KO artist. He was originally supposed to face Sedriques Dumas, but the latter was forced to pull out because he was unable to get authorities to remove an ankle monitor in time to participate in fight week activities. Ewert was the replacement fighter. He was pulled from a planned fight on the upcoming season of Dana White's Contender Series to fight McVey. Fans may be losers in this one too. McVey has star potential. The 6-foot-4 26-year-old has a 100 percent finish rate with knockouts in every professional fight. UFC fans will have to wait to see him in the Octagon. It's possible Ewert could still land on DWCS, but the huge weight miss is a bad look for his first UFC event. For what it's worth, Ewert's camp says they tried to hard to make the weight, but couldn't get over the finish line. As it is, here is a look at the UFC 317 card set for T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, June 28. Cooper Flagg was the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft as expected, and the league isn't wasting any time putting a spotlight on him for his first potential appearance on the court with the Dallas Mavericks. The NBA released its 2025 summer league schedule on Friday, and a primetime matchup between the Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers that could pit Flagg against Bronny James is on tap for the first day of the NBA 2K26 Summer League. Flagg and Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said Thursday he will play for the Dallas summer league team and NBA insider Marc Stein confirmed James is slated to play for the Lakers' summer league team for the second year in a row. Advertisement If that weren't enough, Flagg's second summer league game with Dallas could be against the San Antonio Spurs and No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper. The Mavericks' third game will be against the Charlotte Hornets, where Flagg could go against former Duke teammate and No. 4 overall pick Kon Knueppel.
