On the brink of greatness: How Sundowns can extend Fifa Club World Cup journey
Image: BackpagePix
From the intensity of local competition to the bright lights of continental football, Mamelodi Sundowns have grown into one of South Africa's most successful and respected clubs.
Their dominance at home has been matched by a hunger to make their mark internationally — most notably with their 2016 CAF Champions League triumph, a victory that made headlines across Africa and announced their arrival on the global stage.
Now, in just their second appearance at the Fifa Club World Cup, the Brazilians find themselves on the verge of another milestone.
With a proud record already behind them, they head into their final group stage clash against Brazilian giants Fluminense at the Hard Rock Stadium (9pm kick-off) on Wednesday, aiming not just to compete, but to add another memorable moment to their growing legacy.
This fixture offers far more than just the chance to advance — it is a real opportunity to reach the last 16 and write another chapter in a story that continues to grow in stature.

Beating the odds
Fluminense might not be considered among the favourites to win the tournament, but they remain a strong and historic club in South America — much like Sundowns are on the African continent.
They currently lead Group F on four points after a 4-2 win over HD Ulsan and a 0-0 draw with Borussia Dortmund in their opener. Sundowns sit on three points and know that nothing short of a victory will be enough to progress to the round of 16.
The challenge is a tough one, but their performance against Dortmund showed they can go toe-to-toe with top teams. Despite costly errors, they created chances, showed character, and played with attacking purpose — qualities they will need to summon again.
Taking the positives from the Dortmund defeat
The 4-3 loss to Dortmund was marked by defensive mistakes, with two goals conceded that could have been avoided. But the overall performance from Sundowns was encouraging.
They created multiple chances and played the kind of fluid, possession-based attacking football that has become their trademark both in the Premiership and Champions League competitions.
Had they been more clinical in front of goal, they could have scored more than three. The way they fought back and nearly forced an equaliser late in the game shows the mental strength and belief they will need against Fluminense — and taking those positives forward, while finishing better, will be crucial.
Impact from the bench
Coach Miguel Cardoso has so far made smart use of his substitutes, with players from the bench stepping up when called upon.
Lebogang Mothiba, who is still settling in and has not played many minutes, came on to score his first goal for the club in the fightback against Dortmund. However, a muscle injury may sideline him for this crucial match — possibly opening the door for a debut appearance in the tournament from Peter Shalulile off the bench.
In midfield, Themba Zwane — recently returned from injury and controversially left out of the CAF Champions League final legs — featured for 87 minutes in the last game. With fitness still being managed, he could be more effective as a second-half option.
His calm presence, vision, and ability to influence games in tight moments could provide Sundowns with the edge they need — particularly as the match reaches what may be its decisive stages.

Mamelodi Sundowns poised for another dominant season
Mamelodi Sundowns, one of Africa's wealthiest football clubs, boasts a squad valued at R744 million, with Lucas Ribeiro leading at R51.54 million, while star keeper Ronwen Williams is not among the top 10, and the team recently earned R228 million from the FIFA Club World Cup. Picture: Federico Parra/AFP Mamelodi Sundowns will enter the 2025/26 Premiership season with their sights set on an unprecedented ninth consecutive league title. Their recent showing at the FIFA Club World Cup further highlighted the gulf in class between them and the rest of the domestic competition. While most teams have spent the off-season preparing for the upcoming campaign, the Brazilians had their schedule extended by international commitments. Their participation in the expanded Club World Cup saw them go toe-to-toe with some of the world's elite, leaving them with limited time to rest before turning their focus back to local matters. That short turnaround could be a blessing in disguise. For a squad used to juggling multiple competitions throughout the season, a brief break may be just enough to recharge without losing sharpness. It might even give them a competitive edge heading into the opening weeks. There hasn't been a flurry of incoming transfer activity at Chloorkop, but with the depth and quality already in the squad, it was hardly necessary. The core group that powered them to glory last season remains intact. That continuity offers stability at a time when many of their rivals are rebuilding and integrating new faces.

Mamelodi Sundowns make move for former Kaizer Chiefs star
Mamelodi Sundowns have set their sights on TS Galaxy and Bafana Bafana defender Khulumani Ndamane, aiming to secure the 21-year-old ahead of the 2025/2026 season. After an impressive breakthrough campaign, Ndamane has become one of the most sought-after young talents in South African football. The highly-rated left-footed defender joined TS Galaxy from Kaizer Chiefs last year, having previously shone in the DStv Diski Challenge. However, Chiefs never promoted him to the first team, a decision now under scrutiny after his meteoric rise. Since his move to Galaxy, Ndamane has started 27 matches, missing only six across all competitions. His consistent performances earned him a senior debut for Bafana Bafana in the recent 0-0 draw against Tanzania at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Bafana head coach Hugo Broos heaped praise on the youngster, saying: 'He has a massive future ahead. As a left-footed defender, he shows composure, aerial strength and the physical presence required to succeed at the highest level.' Ndamane's towering frame and versatility have not gone unnoticed abroad. Romanian giants FCSB, who currently have Siyabonga Ngezana on their books, made an approach for a loan with an option to buy. However, sources confirmed that the proposal was turned down. Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns closely monitored developments. As it stands, discussions between Sundowns and TS Galaxy continue, with the possibility of a loan return to Galaxy still on the table – though increasingly unlikely. Sundowns view Ndamane as a long-term fix for the left side of their defence. Their previous gamble on Lucas Suarez ended in disappointment, with the Argentine heading back to South America after failing to impress. Galaxy are bracing themselves for yet another key departure in this transfer window, having already lost Lebone Seema to Pirates. Following their record fifth-place finish last season, the Rockets look set for a significant squad overhaul. The chase for Khulumani Ndamane may signal the start of their reshaping. And fans will be watching closely to see whether Masandawana can land one of Mzansi's most exciting young defenders. Do Mamelodi Sundowns need Khulumani Ndamane?
