Image: Backpagepix Mamelodi Sundowns will officially kick off their pre-season on July 21 and focus on honing their skills at home in South Africa. Unlike previous seasons, Sundowns will refrain from international travel and have opted for a domestic pre-season. It will mark a fresh start for a team that endured a lengthy season filled with highs and lows. Head coach Miguel Cardoso, who has been in charge for approximately six months, has faced intense scrutiny following a heart-wrenching defeat in the CAF Champions League final against Egyptian side Pyramids FC. Despite the criticism, which notably raised questions about Cardoso's decision to omit captain Themba Zwane from both legs of the final, the Sundowns management has publicly reaffirmed its support for the coach. Despite finishing third in their group with four points and narrowly missing out on a spot in the knockout phase, Sundowns' tenacity against higher-profile opponents has been viewed positively by the club's executives. Management has expressed satisfaction with Cardoso's work to date and is reportedly prepared to back him during the upcoming transfer window. They aim to bolster the squad in a bid to secure another shot at the elusive CAF Champions League title. One player strongly linked with Sundowns is Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien. There are also reports suggesting that management is exploring talent from the South American and European markets. Within the squad, there is a growing belief in Cardoso's capabilities, and players are optimistic about the upcoming season. The pressure is mounting on the Portuguese coach to deliver not only the customary league title, but also additional silverware to a trophy cabinet that is rapidly filling. One of the standout stars of the last season, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, has attracted attention from abroad following a stellar performance in the league, where he ended as the top goal scorer. His impressive efforts at the FIFA Club World Cup have further solidified his place on the radar of European scouts. Latest reports indicate that Turkish giants Trabzonspor have taken a keen interest in the 26-year-old Brazilian forward, who showcased remarkable vision and striking ability throughout the tournament. They are reportedly looking to secure his services this summer, indicating that Costa's tenure with Sundowns could be entering its final stage.

Mamelodi Sundowns a shining light for African football at Fifa Club World Cup

Lucas Ribeiro Costa was one of the top players for Mamelodi Sundowns at the Club World Cup. Photo: AFP Image: AFP Comment by Herman Gibbs Mamelodi Sundowns emerged as the stand-out African club at the Fifa Club World Cup, which saw all four African representatives failing to advance to the knockout stage. On Wednesday night in Miami, despite a gripping 0-0 draw against the Brazilian football powerhouse Fluminense, Sundowns fell just one point shy of reaching the last-16 round. At the start of the tournament, Masandawana were overshadowed by the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense. However, they quickly transformed into a team that captured the imagination of the fans while demonstrating their mettle on the world stage. Their presence in Group F became a narrative of inspiration and unexpected brilliance since very little was known about the South Africans before the tournament. Travelling to the USA to represent South Africa alongside African heavyweights like Al Ahly from Egypt, Tunisia's Esperance, and Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Sundowns were aware of the challenge that lay ahead. Collectively, those teams boast an impressive legacy of 19 CAF Champions League titles. Disappointingly, none managed to progress past the group phase, with Masandawana making the most memorable impression despite their early departure. Video Player is loading. The volume of turnovers and inability to maintain possession indicated the pressure exerted by their rivals. Each match became a trial by fire, but the Brazilians proved they could rise to the occasion against stiff competition. The stands at Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday were filled predominantly with Fluminense's supporters. However, the contingent of 50 yellow-and-green-clad Sundowns fans created a gala-like atmosphere. Their spirited chants, elaborate choreography and rhythmic drumming transcended the noise levels, inviting neutral spectators to join their celebration. Their fans, some donned in exquisite sequined headdresses, painted a vivid picture of dedication and passion that echoed through the venue. The Club World Cup offers a platform for teams from around the globe to showcase their talents, and Mamelodi Sundowns took full advantage of this opportunity. Lucas Ribeiro Costa Lucas Ribeiro Costa of Mamelodi Sundowns. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix The Brazilian playmaker was central to Mamelodi Sundowns' historic 18th league title, guiding the side to their eighth consecutive crown with elegance and purpose. At 26, Ribeiro Costa made his presence felt not just with numbers – 16 goals and nine assists – but through leadership in the final third. He consistently dictated play, linking up fluently with teammates, while showing sharp instincts and game intelligence. Remarkably, he did so while staying clear of suspensions and injuries, underscoring his consistency and discipline. It was a season that placed him firmly among the best in the land. Relebohile Mofokeng Relebohile Mofokeng has been urged to move abroad in order to continue growing as a footballer. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix A rising star whose name is already etched in the hearts of Orlando Pirates fans, Mofokeng lit up the season with flair and fearlessness. His creativity, dribbling and composure under pressure made him a nightmare for defenders and a joy for spectators. Mofokeng played a pivotal role in pushing Pirates to a second-place finish, and was influential in many key moments. His meteoric rise has already sparked comparisons to some of South Africa's greats, and his inclusion among the top performers this season is richly deserved. Devin Titus Stellenbosch FC star Devin Titus (left). The 24-year-old winger featured in every league game, providing eight goals and five assists in a campaign that saw Stellies continue to overachieve. Despite the club's modest resources, Titus' work ethic and attacking output were crucial as they secured another impressive finish. His growth and maturity reflect a player who leads by example, and his reliability cannot be overstated. Iqraam Rayners MAMELODI Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners continues to add his name to the history of the club. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Rayners proved once again why he's one of the PSL's most reliable goal-getters. The striker finished with 14 goals – second only in the Golden Boot race to Ribeiro Costa (16) – while also supplying nine assists, showcasing the growth to his game. His transition to Sundowns after joining at the start of the season was seamless, and his all-round contribution in the final third made him a constant threat. With both finishing and playmaking in his locker, Rayners is a strong candidate for top honours. On the brink of greatness: How Sundowns can extend Fifa Club World Cup journey

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lucas Ribeiro Costa heads an uncontested ball against Borussia Dortmund during a Fifa Club World Cup game at TQL Stadium Soccer in Cincinnati on Saturday. | Shutterstock Image: BackpagePix From the intensity of local competition to the bright lights of continental football, Mamelodi Sundowns have grown into one of South Africa's most successful and respected clubs. Their dominance at home has been matched by a hunger to make their mark internationally — most notably with their 2016 CAF Champions League triumph, a victory that made headlines across Africa and announced their arrival on the global stage. Now, in just their second appearance at the Fifa Club World Cup, the Brazilians find themselves on the verge of another milestone. With a proud record already behind them, they head into their final group stage clash against Brazilian giants Fluminense at the Hard Rock Stadium (9pm kick-off) on Wednesday, aiming not just to compete, but to add another memorable moment to their growing legacy. This fixture offers far more than just the chance to advance — it is a real opportunity to reach the last 16 and write another chapter in a story that continues to grow in stature. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Beating the odds Fluminense might not be considered among the favourites to win the tournament, but they remain a strong and historic club in South America — much like Sundowns are on the African continent. They currently lead Group F on four points after a 4-2 win over HD Ulsan and a 0-0 draw with Borussia Dortmund in their opener. Sundowns sit on three points and know that nothing short of a victory will be enough to progress to the round of 16. The challenge is a tough one, but their performance against Dortmund showed they can go toe-to-toe with top teams. Despite costly errors, they created chances, showed character, and played with attacking purpose — qualities they will need to summon again. Taking the positives from the Dortmund defeat The 4-3 loss to Dortmund was marked by defensive mistakes, with two goals conceded that could have been avoided. But the overall performance from Sundowns was encouraging. They created multiple chances and played the kind of fluid, possession-based attacking football that has become their trademark both in the Premiership and Champions League competitions. Had they been more clinical in front of goal, they could have scored more than three. The way they fought back and nearly forced an equaliser late in the game shows the mental strength and belief they will need against Fluminense — and taking those positives forward, while finishing better, will be crucial. Impact from the bench Coach Miguel Cardoso has so far made smart use of his substitutes, with players from the bench stepping up when called upon. Lebogang Mothiba, who is still settling in and has not played many minutes, came on to score his first goal for the club in the fightback against Dortmund. However, a muscle injury may sideline him for this crucial match — possibly opening the door for a debut appearance in the tournament from Peter Shalulile off the bench. In midfield, Themba Zwane — recently returned from injury and controversially left out of the CAF Champions League final legs — featured for 87 minutes in the last game. With fitness still being managed, he could be more effective as a second-half option. His calm presence, vision, and ability to influence games in tight moments could provide Sundowns with the edge they need — particularly as the match reaches what may be its decisive stages.
