Australia joins Japan, South Korea, Uzbekistan as FIFA World Cup finals qualifiers

Australia has joined Japan, Iran, South Korea and first-time qualifiers Uzbekistan and Jordan as automatic qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
The Socceroos secured their place with a gritty 2-1 victory over Asian powerhouse Saudi Arabia in Jeddah. The win meant they finished second in Group C to Japan, which earlier crushed Indonesia 6-0 to win Group C.
"Now, [we] see the real level of a top team, a top country, and [see that we] need to improve," Indonesia's coach Patrick Kluivert said after the game. "It was a big learning moment although we're very disappointed with the result.''
Iran was confirmed as Group A winner with a 3-0 win over North Korea that came after Kye Tam was sent off for the visitors with 24 minutes remaining in Tehran. Mehdi Mohebi, Mehdi Taremi and Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh were all on target in the last 16 minutes to guarantee first place for the Iranians, who had secured their berth in March.

Already-qualified Uzbekistan took second spot with a 3-0 win against Qatar in Tashkent while the United Arab Emirates claimed third ahead of the Qataris despite conceding a late goal to draw 1-1 with Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek.
Uzbekistan is the first nation from Central Asia to qualify for the World Cup finals and was a likely contender to step up and gain qualification after narrowly missing out in 2006 and 2014.
While most of its team plays in the domestic league, it includes a few Europe-based stars like Roma forward Eldor Shomurodov and Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov.
South Korea completed its commitments in Group B with a 4-0 thrashing of Kuwait to ensure Hong Myung-bo's World Cup-bound outfit topped the standings with an unbeaten record. Jordan, which qualified for its first World Cup, finished second in Group B despite losing 1-0 to former Australian coach Graham Arnold's Iraq in Amman.

Will any other Asian nations qualify?
Yes. The beaten Saudis feature in a fourth phase of qualifiers in October alongside Indonesia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Oman.
These six teams will be split into two groups of three, with the winners of each group qualifying for the finals.
Saudi Arabia would be favourites to qualify, given its pedigree at World Cups, including a famous win against eventual winner Argentina in 2022.
The two sides which finish as runners-up will then play off against each other in a two-legged final. The winner of that match up will advance to a play-off tournament.
That tournament will feature six teams, two from Concacaf (North and Central America) and one team apiece from Asia, Africa, South America and Oceania.
The two highest-ranked teams will go directly into the finals.
The four lowest-ranked nations will then meet in semi-finals with the two winners going through to the World Cup.

Who else has already qualified?
The 2026 World Cup finals will be hosted across three nations: Canada, Mexico and the United States. As hosts, these three automatically qualify. Apart from the six Asian nations, Argentina and New Zealand are the only other confirmed qualifiers so far.
What happens next?
European qualifying matches only began in March this year, so we won't know who has qualified until March 2026. The 54 nations are divided into 12 groups, with all group winners automatically qualifying. Another four qualifiers will be decided in a play-off between the second-placed teams and four best-ranked UEFA Nations League section winners.
In South America, Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil are best-placed for automatic qualification with Colombia and Venezuela battling for the sixth spot. The seventh-placed team will go into the play off tournament.
We won't know who will qualify from Africa until later this year. There are 54 teams in nine groups with the top team from each group qualifying. The four best runners-up go to play-off semifinals.
Central America and the Caribbean qualifiers are in the process of deciding the final 12 teams which will be divided into three groups of four teams. The three group winners will qualify directly. Two other teams will enter the play off tournament.
With New Zealand securing direct qualification in March, Oceania runners-up New Caledonia gets a second chance when it enters the play-off tournament.

Sad truth as legend misses Western Bulldogs celebration

Bulldogs legend Chris Grant was the big name missing from the Western Bulldogs' centenary gala on Monday night. On a special night for the football club, it was sad for many fans to see Grant did not attend the event as rumours of a rift between the former centre half-forward and club officials continue to swirl. As first reported by Channel 9's Tom Morris, Grant was not at the Whitten Oval gala where the club celebrated its 25 greatest players of the past 100 years. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? It is a concerning update following months of rumours the 52-year-old fell out with sections of the club before his departure as football department boss last year. According to Code Sports in March, Grant and Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge were not on speaking terms towards the end of the 2024 season. Bulldogs chief executive Ameet Bains in February, 2024, said there had been 'tensions in many quarters' but denied there was a rift between Grant and Beveridge, saying those reports had been 'grossly exaggerated'. However, it is clear the dynamic deteriorated, leading to Grant's decision to step down in November — ending his 31 years with the club. Since debuting with the club in 1990 as a 17-year-old, Grant developed into one of the club's greatest players, twice winning the Charles Sutton Medal. He was named captain in 2001. His retirement in 2007 was the end of an era. Grant was loved on and off the field as a loyal club servant, reportedly turning down a monster contract offer from Port Adelaide to stay with the Bulldogs during his playing career. He was appointed to the club's board of directors in 2011 and moved into a role as football department boss in 2016 to oversee the men's and women's teams. Both sides won premierships, in 2016 and 2018 respectively. Grant's decision to step down came after the Bulldogs created a new position in 2023 which created distance between him and senior coach Beveridge. Former Geelong defender Matthew Egan was appointed as general manager of football operations following a review of the club's football department. It meant Beveridge no longer reported to Grant directly. According to The Age, Grant's role shifted to focus more on the club's AFLW program. It is clear Grant's messy split from the club cut deep, judging by his no-shows at recent club events. 'One person who isn't here is Chris Grant, who had an acrimonious split with the club last year when he was the club football boss,' Morris said on 9News. 'He missed the Round 2 gala at the MCG. And he's also missing tonight, saying he's unavailable.' 25 of the greatest all together. â¤ï¸ — Western Bulldogs (@westernbulldogs) July 21, 2025 Grant missed the club's 100 year celebration — against Collingwood in March — with the club saying he was overseas at the time. He played 300 games for the club and it would have been fitting for Grant to attend both of this year's big events. His farewell statement in 2024 showed how sad his separation from the club has been. 'I've spent over half of my life with the club as a player and administrator and will cherish the many memories we have created together at the Western Bulldogs,' Grant said. 'While the decision to pause and map out the next stage of my professional career has not been an easy one, I leave knowing the club is in a great position to succeed and write the next chapter in the amazing history of the red, white and blue.' Six living Brownlow medallists, including recently distant 2008 medallist Adam Cooney, attended the March celebration where greats of the club were recognised before the game on the MCG playing surface. Club champions, including Brad Johnson, Doug Hawkins, Rohan Smith, Scott West and Bob Murphy were present. It has been a turbulent time at The Kennel in recent years with the departure of several football department figures, but the club has banked on stability in handing Beveridge a two-year contract extension through to the end of the 2027 season. The Bulldogs have not won a final since 2021.

2025 Bletchingly Stakes: Trainer Troy Corstens concedes Baraqiel is vulnerable first-up

Trainer Troy Corstens has conceded Baraqiel could be vulnerable fresh in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The comeback sprinter jumped out impressively last Friday, defeated Group 2 winner Arkansaw Kid and the talented Don't Hope Do in a slick 800m heat. Baraqiel has not raced since last November as the Group 2 winner sustained a front suspensory injury – his second – after a hind setback early in his career. Baraqiel made his debut as a late five-year-old last season and proceeded to win six of 10 starts, including the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1200m). , said Baraqiel would improve out of Saturday whatever the result. 'I'm going in coming off a long break, so whatever he does I'll be careful at telling the owners we're going to improve into the campaign,' Corstens said. 'His fitness level is good, it's not perfect, but that's to be expected for the amount of time he's had off.' Baraqiel has firmed $3 into $2.80 in all-in Bletchingly markets from Bridal Waltz ($4.60) and New York Lustre ($6). 'I would've loved it to be 1100m, then I'd be a bit more confident,' Corstens said. 'The 1200m, he's going to be fresh, he'll run well but he'll take a stack of fitness from it.' A star is born. âï¸ Baraqiel trots in the McEwen! 😱 @MaluaRacing @RacingBennett @bennallen44 — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) October 26, 2024 • Corstens has the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at The Valley on September 26 – AFL Grand Final Eve – slated as the ultimate spring goal for Baraqiel. 'How we get there, we'll just see,' Corstens said. 'Whether we have three runs into the Manikato or two, we'll see how he is. 'I think he's a very very good horse, I would've loved to have had him sound from his two-year-old days that's for sure, it's his second prep really, proper second prep. 'He's really sound at the moment … came through that trial well (last Friday), I'm looking forward to seeing where he can take us.' Corstens has regular jockey Ben Allen booked to ride Baraqiel on Saturday. 'I don't think we could get him off with a crowbar,' Corstens laughed. Meanwhile, in-form Listed winner Marble Nine is set to return to Flemington on August 2 for the Group 3 Aurie's Star Handicap (1200m). Corstens won the Flemington sprint in 2021 with The Astrologist. 'We were going to tip him out (after the Listed Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final) but he came through the run really well,' Corstens said.
