Man charged over Capel Street garda stabbing remanded in custody by Dublin court

Irish Examiner3 days ago
A 23-year-old man charged over the stabbing of a Garda on a Dublin city-centre street on Tuesday evening has been remanded in custody.
Abdullah Khan, with an address in North Dublin, was arrested at the scene following an incident at around 6pm on Capel Street on the city's north side.
The injured Garda, a young probationary member of the force who was on high-visibility patrol with a colleague, received hospital treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
The accused was detained for questioning before he was charged on Wednesday night with assault causing harm to the officer and production of a Tactix knife capable of causing serious injury.
He was brought before Judge Treasa Kelly at Dublin District Court on Thursday morning.
He has yet to indicate a plea, made no bail application, and was remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on August 6, pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The charges are under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.
Dressed in a black T-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms, Mr Khan sat silently throughout the brief hearing.
Detective Sergeant Liam McLaughlin, of Bridewell Garda Station, gave evidence, telling Judge Kelly that the accused "made no reply" to each charge. The court heard that Mr Khan was also handed copies of the charges.
Detective Sergeant McLaughlin stated that he intended to object to Mr Khan's bail. However, defence solicitor Colleen Gildernew said, "There is no application for bail today."
She also added that her client did not wish to appear via video link at his next hearing but wanted to be produced in court.
Judge Kelly added that to her order and also acceded to a request from the solicitor to direct medical attention for the accused in prison.
Ms Gildernew also requested reporting restrictions on the publication of her client's address, given the nature of the case and "concerns around safety," which was confirmed by Detective Sergeant McLaughlin.
Judge Kelly ordered journalists not to report the man's address.
Legal aid was granted after a statement of Mr Khan's means was furnished to the court.
Judge Kelly also ordered the defence to give gardaí 24 hours' notice if the accused intends to make a bail application.

Croatian truck driver remanded in custody over €2 million drugs haul in Cork

A truck driver has been remanded in custody charged in connection with a €2 million drugs seizure from a consignment of steel at the Port of Cork . Robert Slivar (59), of no fixed abode but from Ivanic, Croatia , was brought before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Saturday. He was charged with two offences relating to the seizure of 93 packages of cannabis grass, weighing 107kg and worth €2.1 million. Mr Slivar, who arrived in Cork by ferry from Zeebrugge in Belgium , was charged with cannabis possession and possession of cannabis for sale or supply at the Port of Cork, Ringaskiddy, on July 27th, contrary to section 3 and section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. The alleged discovery was made by a sniffer dog, customs officers and gardaí . READ MORE Det Garda Ryan Dillon, of the Cork city divisional drugs unit, gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution, telling the court Mr Slivar made no reply to either charge when they were put to him after caution outside Togher Garda station. Insp Ray Dunne said gardaí sought for Mr Slivar to be remanded in custody, but defence solicitor Diarmuid Kelleher said his client, who was assisted throughout the proceedings by a Croatian interpreter, was seeking bail. Det Garda Dillon outlined objections to bail, citing the seriousness of the charges, the alleged strength of evidence in the case and fears Mr Slivar poses a flight risk as he has no ties to Ireland. Judge John King refused bail and remanded Mr Slivar in custody to appear again at a special sitting of Cork District Court on Wednesday. The judge also requested a statement of means from the accused before deciding whether to grant free legal aid.

Senior garda charged with rape offences

High-ranking officer suspended from duty after long-running investigation into alleged sexual misconduct sees him appear at sitting of district court Figures show there are currently 94 members of the force suspended from duty A senior garda has been suspended from duty after appearing in court charged with a number of rape offences. He was arrested following a long-running investigation into alleged sexual offences led by specialist detectives. The garda, who has a legal right to anonymity due to the nature of the alleged offences, appeared before a sitting of a district court last month where he was formally charged. The senior garda faces three counts of rape against a female, which allegedly occurred on separate dates in the same year a number of years ago. The injured party in the case was known to him. One of the alleged offences is contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990. Court records state that the other two charges relate to offences contrary to Section 48 Offences Against the Person Act, 1861 and Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act, 1981 as amended by section 21 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990. Figures show there are currently 94 members of the force suspended from duty News in 90 Seconds - Sunday, August 3rd He has also been suspended from duty by An Garda Síochána. His first court appearance was last month and he was remanded on bail. The senior officer is expected to appear in court again later this year. The legislation under which he is charged means he will face trial on indictment before the Central Criminal Court, which hears the most serious sexual offences. A Garda spokesperson said last night: 'As part of a Garda investigation into alleged sexual offences, a member of An Garda Síochána in Munster has been arrested and charged. The Garda is suspended.' The most recent figures available show that there are currently 94 members of An Garda Siochána suspended from duty. The figures, as of June 6, shows that these members have been suspended for a combined total of 89,534 days. They were released by Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan following a parliamentary question by Sinn Fein TD Carol Nolan. These suspensions relate to a wide range of issues including theft, disclosure of information and assaults. Over a third of suspensions also relate to sexual assaults, driving while under the influence, and domestic violence. A large number of incidents which have resulted in a member of An Garda Síochána being removed from duty have also occurred while they were off-duty. The Policing and Community Safety Authority heard in May that around 55 gardaí were at that time also on 'non-public facing duties'.
