Caerphilly secondary school pupils win STEM challenge
Supported by Formula 1, the programme connects schools in the UK, South Africa, and India to tackle real-world science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) challenges.
Francisco Lopez, lead teacher at St Martin's School, said: "What started as a small school project quickly grew beyond expectations.
"The students worked independently, reached out to experts such as Welsh Water and developed not just one idea but a range of thoughtful, realistic solutions.
"They learned that global issues like water scarcity aren't just engineering problems – they involve people, politics, and empathy."
The Caerphilly pupils partnered with Hoërskool Koffiefontein in South Africa, whose students highlighted a serious water supply issue in their town.
Through video calls and research, the Welsh students developed a plan addressing technical solutions and the broader social and economic context of the crisis.
In return, the South African pupils explored the UK's cost of living crisis, focusing on ways to reduce energy and heating costs.
Mr Lopez said the win was a shock.
He said: "I was over the moon – especially for the students.
"I ran to tell the headteacher.
"The competition across the UK was fierce, and honestly, I didn't expect to win.
"I had to read the announcement email twice.
"This is a memory they'll carry for the rest of their lives.
"Some are big F1 fans and they couldn't believe they'd be VIP guests."
As part of their prize, the eight-strong team – four boys and four girls – will meet Formula 1 engineers, tour the paddock, and see how STEM is used in elite motorsport.
The Learning Sectors programme aims to reach 700 schools worldwide in its first year.

It's always a test because every team will want to always beat you. 'So we kept going right to the very end and Colby, who's been excellent, got the winning goal.' Celtic made it two wins out of two in pre-season after a win against Queen's Park last Friday and will head off to Portugal to continue their preparation for the upcoming campaign. Rodgers said: 'Obviously come the weekend, the international players will be back involved in the game (against Estrela da Amadora). 'But the start to the pre-season has been really good and we've got to continue working very, very hard. I think that's the nature of pre-season. 'There's no let-up, there's nothing easy, got to work to build that foundation of fitness and then we'll be, as I said, fully prepared, but we're looking forward to Portugal.' Meanwhile, Celtic announced Gustaf Lagerbielke has joined Braga on a permanent transfer. The 25-year-old Sweden defender joined the Parkhead club from Elfsborg in 2023 but spent last season on loan at Twente in the Netherlands.

How councils in Wales are boosting their cyber defences
The move comes amid a rise in digital threats targeting public services, which rely on secure IT systems to deliver critical support to communities. Councillor Dimitri Batrouni, Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) spokesperson for digital and workforce, said: "Cyber resilience isn't a luxury – it's a necessity. "As threats continue to evolve, councils need the tools and confidence to safeguard the systems that underpin the services people depend on." The National Cyber Security Centre has reported a steady increase in attacks on the public sector, including phishing, ransomware, and supply chain incidents. To address these risks, Welsh councils and fire and rescue services are using the Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF) to identify vulnerabilities and strengthen their cyber resilience. The WLGA, in partnership with the Welsh Government, is supporting the rollout of the framework alongside other initiatives. These include breach workshops, tabletop exercises, training videos, and CymruSOC, a centralised security operations centre that monitors and supports council cyber security. Mr Batrouni said: "The Cyber Assessment Framework is a vital part of this effort. "It helps councils understand their strengths and gaps and provides a structure for improvement."
