Chappell Roan slams The Voice as she reveals her painful audition for the hit show: 'Scariest thing ever'

Daily Mail30-04-2025
Chappell Roan has slammed The Voice while recounting the painful audition experience she had for the competition show.
The 27-year-pop star rocketed to fame thanks to her 2023 album The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, which emerged last year as a sleeper hit.
Along with being captivated by her songs, her fans have also praised the Missouri-born songstress for her forthright attitude - though her behavior fell under scrutiny last week when she was accused of pushing her assistant on the red carpet.
She was as blunt as ever in her latest interview, in which she recalled trying out for The Voice when she was just 15 years old.
Her 15th birthday landed in February 2013, the year The Voice aired its fifth season, with Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green as judges.
Although Chappell did not say she appeared before the celebrity panel, she shared the brutally dismissive treatment she received at the hands of 'the producer or whoever the f*** was watching ' her audition, in a cover interview with W.
'When I auditioned for The Voice, I was 15 and I sang Stay, by Rihanna,' said Chappell, referring to a 2012 song by the Umbrella hitmaker.
'That was when the Bruno Mars song When I Was Your Man was really big, and I thought I was so unique in switching it around and singing 'When you were my man' and making it about gender. But every girl was like: 'I'm switching it around.''
She added: 'By the way, when I did the Voice audition, the producer or whoever the f*** was watching did not even look up from his phone. He was like, 'Okay, next.''
Chappell remembered: 'And I went up there and sang a cappella, the scariest thing ever. He never really looked at me.'
In the same interview, she shared that The Voice was not the only reality competition series that she tried out for when she was a teenager.
'With America's Got Talent, I was 13, and we flew to Austin, Texas, and waited in line with thousands of people at 4 a.m. I sang True Colors, by Cyndi Lauper. Did not make it either,' dished the Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl singer.
Days ago, fans accused Chappell of pushing her assistant on a red carpet, in a clip that went viral of her at the 2025 Fashion Los Angeles Awards.
The footage initially showed her waving at fans while standing next to two other people - but at one stage the Good Luck, Babe! singer appeared to softly collide with her assistant and gently push her away with her arm.
Social media users scathingly denounced Chappell for her 'rude and disrespectful act' and her 'nasty evil spirit,' with one remarking: 'it was an emotional and psychological push, with her hand there to infer of a push… truly sinister.'
Chappell made headlines this past September for furiously snapping back at a red carpet photographer at the MTV Video Music Awards.
The exchange began when a male photographer off-camera was heard apparently shouting that someone needed to 'turn.'
At some point, a photographer was heard shouting: 'Shut the f*** up,' to which Chappell turned and bellowed back: 'YOU shut the f*** up!'
She added: 'No! Not me, b****!' prompting whoops from some of the observers on the scene. 'Tell him, girl,' said one woman who was watching the encounter.
Chappell was previously vocal about her exasperation over 'weird' fans making her 'uncomfortable' with their intrusive behavior - prompting a backlash from social media users who felt she was being ungrateful for her stardom.
'I don't care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous, whatever,' she said on TikTok last August.
'I don't care that it's normal. I don't care that this crazy type of behavior comes along with the job, the career field I've chosen.'
Chappell continued: 'That does not make it okay that doesn't make it normal. That doesn't mean that I want it, that doesn't mean that I like it....'
She defiantly declared she did not 'give a f***' about being regarded as 'selfish' for saying ''no for a photo or for your time or for a hug. That's not normal, that's weird.'

My body is kinda back. I just have to stop eating chocolate now and saying 'the baby wants it' hahahaha damn. ‌ "Anyway, this caption is too long but just wanted to let you know. Hollyoaks star marries in lavish ceremony three years after cancer battle

Abi Phillips, who played Liberty Savage on Hollyoaks, married her long-term fiancé Gav in a stunning ceremony at Lake Garda in Italy, where they had got engaged in 2023 Hollyoaks star Abi Phillips has tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Italy more than three years after her cancer battle. The actress, who played Liberty Savage on the Channel 4 soap, married her long-term fiancé, Gav, in front of her closest family and friends at Lake Garda - the same location where the couple got engaged in 2023. Abi, who joined Hollyoaks in 2010 and departed the show three years later, took to Instagram to share snaps and videos of her happy day. ‌ Her posts included clips of her getting her wedding hair done, as well as details of their reception being prepared. Abi also shared clips of her and Gav dancing in casual clothes before changing to their elegant wedding looks. ‌ Alongside a carousel of photos of her and her now husband, Abi wrote: "Literally having to pinch myself these last couple of days because I can't quite believe that I was lucky enough to marry the love of my life surrounded by all of the most important people in our lives in our dream venues… @gavgilly we bloody it!!! "Our wedding day was the best type of rollercoaster and we wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who made the effort to come all the way to Italy to celebrate with us. We love you all so much." ‌ She added: "Also another HUGE thank you to all of our incredible suppliers who honestly now feel like family to us who made our day truly unforgettable." Many fans took to the comment section to congratulate the newlyweds, with one saying: "Sensational!! So happy for the two of you." Another wrote: "Congratulations to you both!! You looked stunning adore your dress and the wedding looked perfect." One more said: "Wowwe! So incredibly beautiful! The biggest congratulations, so much love and happiness for you both." "The most beautiful bride and groom!!!" a fan said, while the wedding planner commented: "I loved EVERY minute of planning your wedding with you." Abi and Gav got engaged at Lake Garda in 2023 and she announced the happy news on social media, by sharing a selfie showing off her huge engagement ring. ‌ Captioning her upload, she penned: "So this happened last night! The most magical week in Lake Garda, with my favourite person in the world @gavgilly ended with us getting engaged. The most perfect proposal at sunset at the edge of the lake." She went on to add: "The last 11 years together have been the best of my life and I'm so looking forward to forever together. Thank you for making this trip the most incredible week, it will forever hold a place in my heart. I love you so much!" ‌ The couple's engagement came just under a year after Abi revealed she had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The actress, who auditioned for The Voice in 2017, explained that she had been diagnosed with the disease, telling fans: "I'd previously been sent away from the doctors after having found two lumps in my neck, they'd passed it off and said I was 'young' and it wouldn't be anything and I was 'probably getting over a cold' or my body was 'fighting something off'. "As much as that's what I wanted to hear I wanted to get everything checked for my own peace of mind. Fast forward two weeks and just before Easter weekend I had an appointment to see a consultant at the QE hospital who sat me down and told me that I had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and that I would need surgery and radiotherapy treatment. "I never thought I would be told that I have cancer at the age of 28, you never think it's going to happen to you. I wouldn't have taken things further with seeing a specialist if I hadn't seen @demijones1 post as her lumps were in the exact same place as mine."

TRNSMT fans sizzle in baking heat as 50 Cent, The Script and more wow crowds on day one

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IRISH rockers The Script and rap legend 50 Cent turned up the heat at TRNSMT last night as Scotland's biggest music festival got off to a sizzling start. Fans who'd spent all day basking in the sunshine were in no mood to cool off as the big-name acts belted out classic tracks from the Main Stage in Glasgow Green. 8 TRNSMT revellers arrived early to enjoy the sunshine Credit: Michael Schofield 8 A fan enjoys Twin Atlantic Credit: Michael Schofield 8 A steward gives water to music fans Credit: Getty The huge crowd of 50,000 cheered The Script's Danny O'Donoghue as he told them: 'TRNSMT — you have no idea how good it feels to be back on this stage. 'I know it's all hot and we're melting like a snowman in hell but we wouldn't miss it for the world.' The frontman could be seen sporting a gold wedding band after marrying longtime partner Anais Naing in May. And the ex-judge on telly talent show The Voice was voted a definite winner by delighted revellers as he and his bandmates performed dazzling tunes such as Hall of Fame, Breakeven and Superheroes. The Script were followed on to the stage by 50 Cent. And the hip-hop legend delved into his massive back catalogue to brilliantly deliver hits such as In da Club, Many Men and Just a Lil Bit. Among those dancing along were pals Gabriella McDonagh, 18, and Ava Curtis, 17, from Carfin, Lanarkshire. Gabriella said: 'I love every single one of 50 Cent's songs. We knew we had to get tickets when he was announced. It was worth every penny to see him live. He's so good.' For many young lads at TRNSMT it was a case of taps aff, tunes on, as temperatures soared to 27°C (81F) — with it set to get even hotter today and tomorrow. Revellers were urged to slap on sun cream and keep hydrated. Three generations of gig-goers were first into the festival arena after queuing up from 7.30am — more than four hours before the doors even opened. Gran Sheila Crawford, 75, of Newcastle, plus daughter Hayley, 46, and granddaughter Eleysha, 26, were desperate to be the most dedicated folk at the event. Full list of TRNSMT bar prices revealed as pints are hiked up Eleysha said: 'We're so excited to be at TRNSMT together.' She explained the family group were massive fans of The Script, adding: 'I've loved The Script since I was nine after I saw videos of them on YouTube. 8 Wet Leg were among the more popular acts to perform. We're going straight to Ireland to see them in Limerick again once this is over. 'We've been to see The Script hundreds of times. We just had to make sure we were first in the queue to see them here.' Meanwhile, mum Anne McLaren, 37, and daughter Althea, 17, from Dunfermline, were also buzzing to bond over their favourite tracks at TRNSMT. Althea said: 'I was so happy that both The Script and 50 Cent were here. I'd always wanted to see both of them.' And Anne explained: 'My daughter had an extra ticket and dragged me along with her. I was glad when I heard that 50 Cent would be performing. 'It's nice to spend time together with my daughter on such a nice day.' Enjoying the sunshine in Scotland were Irish girls Aoife Wall, 21, Alice McMahon, 20, Moira Somers, 21, and Caitlin Gilligan, 20, who are all studying to be teachers at Galway University. Aoife, from Galway, said: 'We're so buzzing to be here in Glasgow. 'It's our first time and feels like a home away from home. I really wanted to see The Fontaines DC and 50 Cent.' Aesthetics practitioner Karla Jamieson, 34, of Hamilton, said: 'TRNSMT is always great fun. I was most looking forward to seeing 50 Cent. I've met him before. 'He always puts on a great show so I knew he'd be nothing short of amazing.' Andrea Fisher, 50, had booked her trip all the way from Melbourne, Australia, to see Kneecap perform in Glasgow Green. And she was gutted when she found out the Irish hip-hop trio had been axed from the TRNSMT line-up at the end of May over security concerns. It followed controversy over comments on Gaza and other subjects. But Andrea coped fine yesterday because she loved the rest of the festival line-up. She said: 'My mum is from Stirling and I really wanted to come to Scotland. 'I had some time off work and figured that a summer festival was the perfect way to enjoy it. 'I came by myself. It took me 32 hours in total to get here.' James Bay was called in as a late replacement for Kneecap but he ensured that punters weren't too gutted with the unfortunate line-up change. The Hold Back the River singer ret-urned to the Main Stage a decade after his first album topped the UK charts. Bay, who previously won a Brit Award for Best Solo Male Artist, had the crowd swooning as he set up a feel-good atmosphere for the rest of the night. Karrie Garscadden, Ellie Amos, and Lucy McIntyre, all 16, from Dalmarnock, Glasgow, were happy to see him. Ellie said: 'We were so happy when James Bay was added. He always puts on a great performance. To have him and 50 Cent on the same night was brilliant for us.' Wet Leg's Rhian Teasdale strode on to the stage in a bikini top and shorts. The pink-haired singer asked the audience: 'It's hot but you guys seem energetic. Are you guys good at screaming?' The Grammy and Brit winners won a host of new fans with their distinctive sound on tunes like Chaise Longue. But hopes of a rumoured surprise performance from Lewis Capaldi were dashed. He was pictured on stage in Nashville, US, on Thursday night Pals Gabriella McDonagh, 18, and Ava Curtis, 17, from Carfin, were there for 50 Cent and couldn't believe he was in Glasgow. Gabriella said: 'I love every one of his songs. We knew we had to get tickets when he was announced and it was worth every penny to see him live. He's so good.' Teaching students Aoife Wall, 21, Alice McMahon, 20, Moira Somers, 21, Caitlin Gilligan, 20, travelled to Glasgow from all across Ireland. Aofie, from Galway, said: 'We're so buzzing to be here in Glasgow. 'It's our first time and feels like a home away from home. I really wanted to see the Fontaines DC and 50 Cent.' Tomorrow sees Biffy Clyro headline day two of TRNSMT as the scorching weather continues. 8 Police were on scene at the festival Credit: Michael Schofield
