UAE launches first National Food Loss, Waste Baseline Study
ABU DHABI (WAM) ne'ma- the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative- has launched the country's first National Baseline Study to measure actual food loss and waste.This first-of-its-kind study, which involves 3,000 participants, marks a pivotal milestone in national efforts to halve food loss and waste by 2030, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3. The pioneering 18-month study will measure actual food loss and waste across the entire food value chain, through the participation of households, businesses, and public sector entities, across all seven Emirates. The study's findings will be unveiled by ne'ma during the first half of 2026.Insights from the study will be used to establish national food loss and food waste indices and inform evidence-based intervention strategies. The study also lays the foundation for systemic change and strengthens national efforts to ensure food security and sustainability.The study is the result of a coordinated national effort, bringing together strategic partners including the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA), Tadweer Group, Dubai Municipality, Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority (DECCA), and Aldar, with additional support from the local municipalities and authorities, the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) and local statistics centres across the UAE.Following extensive preparation and stakeholder engagement since September 2024, the UAE Food Loss and Waste Baseline Study is now underway. Spanning 18 months, this nationwide effort invites the active participation of households and the private and public sectors to help identify where food loss and waste occur the most and why, so the right interventions can be designed to tackle the issue.A key milestone in this journey will take place during September 2025, in a focused two-week data collection field survey coupled with actual measurement of food waste at the household level.Participants across all seven Emirates will take part in shaping a more sustainable future by contributing valuable insights & data on how food is lost and wasted.The data gathered will be rigorously analysed to develop national food loss and waste indices, which will create a clear baseline that reflects where the UAE stands today so that we can monitor our food loss and waste reduction progress.Chief Sustainability Officer of Emirates Foundation and ne'ma Committee Secretary General, Khuloud Hassan Al Nuwais, said, 'Tackling food loss and waste requires national collaboration, and alignment to create a unified approach and methodology for measuring actual food waste across the supply chain. Through the UAE's first National Baseline Study, ne'ma is engaging public, private sector, and community members in building an accurate, data-driven picture of where and how food is lost or wasted. This will enable the UAE to track progress against reduction targets.''The evidence-based solutions will empower households and businesses to adopt best practices, support systemic solutions across the value chain, and drive the shift toward a more sustainable, circular economy. The Baseline Study supports the UAE in building capacity so that we can achieve the target of halving food loss and waste by 50 percent by 2030. Dubai Municipality is committed to driving change at the community level, and the UAE Food Loss and Waste Baseline Study provides the knowledge and tools needed to turn ambition into measurable action across all seven Emirates. By contributing to the UAE's Food Loss and Waste Baseline Study, we are helping generate critical insights that will empower communities across the UAE to take data-informed action and support the country in reaching its 2030 food loss and waste reduction targets.'The UAE Food Loss and Waste Baseline Study's final report will be shared nationally and internationally, contributing to global knowledge sharing on food loss and waste reduction.
In doing so, the UAE reinforces its leadership in advancing the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and promoting sustainable food systems nationally and worldwide.

The expansion will run from Al Badee Interchange in Sharjah to the border of Umm Al Quwain, effectively increasing the road's capacity to handle approximately 9,000 vehicles per hour. This marks a 65 per cent increase in capacity, aiming to substantially ease traffic flow on this heavily used route. Read- In addition to lane expansion, the project includes a comprehensive upgrade of Interchange No. 7 on Emirates Road. This will involve the construction of six directional bridges covering a total length of 12.6 kilometres, capable of accommodating up to 13,200 vehicles per hour. The development will also feature the construction of collector roads on both sides of Emirates Road, spanning 3.4 kilometres to better manage local traffic and enhance accessibility. Timeline, cost, and expected impact With an estimated budget of Dhs750m, the project is scheduled to begin in September 2025 and is expected to be completed within two years. The upgrades aim not only to regulate traffic flow but also to ensure the highest safety standards for all road users. Once complete, commuters traveling from Ras Al Khaimah, through Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah to Dubai, and vice versa, can expect travel time reductions of up to 45 per cent. This improvement will benefit thousands of daily commuters and commercial transport operations, significantly enhancing the movement of goods and services across the UAE. Addressing traffic congestion with innovative solutions The Emirates Road project is considered one of the key solutions to the UAE's traffic congestion challenges. Federal Tax Authority seizes over 3.5 million non-compliant excise goods
14 July 2025 15:02 DUBAI (WAM) During an operation conducted by a team of Federal Tax Authority (FTA) inspectors, a number of unauthorised excise goods were recently seized from a facility in Dubai, where fraudulently packaged and concealed tobacco and beverage products were being purposefully smuggled into the UAE part of its ongoing commitment to combat tax evasion, enhance tax compliance, and safeguard consumers, the FTA inspection team successfully uncovered the UAE-based operation, which was concealing an illegal cache of excise goods within shipments of clothing and footwear – in clear violation of UAE tax FTA clarified that all seized excise goods have now been permanently confiscated, a tax assessment conducted, and corresponding fines have also been applied. The total number of illegal goods seized exceeded 3.5 million items. These included 1.56 million packs of cigarettes, 1.77 million packs of electronic smoking devices and accessories, 111,360 packs of raw tobacco, 4,000 packs of hookah tobacco, 121 packs of nicotine pouches, and 4,600 packs of excise tax due on these products was equivalent to Dh133.2 million, and legal action has been taken against the non-compliant FTA stated that this operation is part of continuous monitoring efforts it undertakes in collaboration with the relevant local and federal authorities, and emphasised that – in order to avoid penalties and fines for non-compliance – producers, importers, and stockists of excise goods must adhere to the tax regulations set forth in Federal Law No. 7 of 2017 on Excise Tax and its line with best international practices, the FTA confirmed that in its battle against tax evasion, it uses the latest advanced electronic control mechanisms, including the application of digital tax stamps on tobacco and tobacco-related products. Each stamp contains electronically registered data, which FTA inspectors verify to ensure the appropriate tax has been paid. The FTA also stressed its commitment to enhancing coordination and cooperation with all relevant federal and local government entities to ensure compliance with tax laws – across all seven emirates of the UAE.
