Homeowner in Vaughan thwarts break-and-enter, several suspects in custody: police
A group of suspects that was allegedly trying to break into homes and steal vehicles in Vaughan early Thursday morning was 'interrupted' by a homeowner, police say.
York Regional Police began searching the area of Pine Valley Drive and Teston road, northwest of Major MacKenzie Drive and Highway 400, at approximately 4 a.m. Three suspects were taken into custody while three to four others remained outstanding.
A police K-9 unit was deployed to the area as the search continued. Police said the group was thwarted by a homeowner, but did not release any additional details.
As many as six suspects were taken into custody. Police said no injuries were reported and nothing was stolen.
The names of the suspects have not been released.
Police said there is no threat to public safety.

They identified the man as a 20-year-old Syrian national. Police did not provide further details on the identity of the attacker or his motive, but later said that he was overpowered by fellow passengers and had also been injured. The perpetrator 'is probably somewhat more seriously injured,' a police spokesperson told German news agency dpa. He was in police custody and receiving medical treatment. The four injured passengers, who were not identified, were taken to nearby hospitals. According to the Bavarian Red Cross, the emergency services were alerted at around 2 p.m. local time, after passengers pulled the emergency brakes. The train came to a halt near the village of Straßkirchen, dpa reported. The Red Cross said a special care center was set up nearby to take care of passengers. In addition to numerous rescue services and two helicopters, psychological caregivers were deployed to help those who were not injured but might have been traumatized. German rail operator Deutsche Bahn said in a statement that 'our thoughts and sympathy are with the injured and all those who now have to come to terms with what they have experienced,' and thanked emergency services for the quick arrest of the suspect. Germany has seen several violent attacks in public spaces in recent months. In May, a woman stabbed and injured more than a dozen people at Hamburg's central station. In February, a driver plowed into a demonstration in Munich, killing two and injuring more than 20. In December, a man killed six and injured more than 200 when he drove a car through a Christmas market in Magdeburg.

Montreal mom who allegedly abandoned daughter on Ontario highway charged with criminal negligence
A Montreal mother accused of abandoning her three-year-old child on the side of a highway last month is back in court Thursday and is facing an additional criminal offence. The 34-year-old woman was arrested June 16 after reporting her daughter missing the day before in Coteau-du-Lac, Que., triggering a massive police search. She was later charged with child abandonment. The young girl was found alive on June 18 on the side of Highway 417 near St. Albert, Ont., about 150 kilometres west of the family home in Montreal. The girl's mother returned to the Valleyfield courthouse Thursday for a bail hearing and was charged with one count of causing bodily harm by criminal negligence. According to a charge sheet, she is accused of failing to 'provide the necessaries of life for a child' under the age of 16 as a parent, which is an offence in the Criminal Code. The name of the woman cannot be published in order to respect the privacy of the child, whose identity is protected by a publication ban. There is also a standard publication ban prohibiting any information relating to evidence presented in court from being released. The Crown prosecutor is opposed to releasing the mother from custody. Her bail hearing continues Thursday afternoon. This is a developing story that will be updated.
