Shane Gillis named 2025 ESPY Awards host: How to watch, recent hosts

USA Today6 days ago

The 2025 ESPYS are approaching, and a comedian will be at center stage.
Shane Gillis will host the 2025 ESPY Awards, which celebrate the past year in sports. The show will take place Wednesday, July 16 at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. local) at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
"I'm excited to be at The ESPYS this year," Gillis said in a statement. "I like sports so this should be a good time."
Gillis will be the first non-athlete to host the show since 2021 when actor Anthony Mackie had the duty. However, the creator and star of the Netflix show "Tires" is an avid sports fan.
"Shane is not only one of the top comedians today, but also a huge sports fan, which made him an easy choice to host The ESPYS,' said ESPN vice president and ESPYS executive producer Craig Lazarus."
Recruited by Army and a former walk-on at Elon University, Gillis is an avid Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan. In fact, he actually had a infamous moment on ESPN as a result.
The comedian was the celebrity guest-picker on "College GameDay" ahead of the College Football Playoff first round matchup between Notre Dame and Indiana on Dec. 20 at Notre Dame Stadium. During the show, Gillis made a slight dig at show analyst and former Alabama coach Nick Saban. He said the Fighting Irish now had a chance at winning since athletes could be paid and it's "not just the SEC and not Coach Saban" doing it.
When it came time for the show's game picks, Gillis' comments were brought up, and the comedian doubled down on his take, which appeared to anger Saban. After the show, Gillis mentioned how Saban seemed actually upset with him.
It made for entertaining TV, but let's hope Gillis vs. Saban doesn't happen again at the ESPYS.

James Harden, Clippers agree to two-year, $81.5 million deal to keep The Beard in Los Angeles

James Harden had an All-NBA season for the Clippers, carrying their offense — with Paul George on the East Coast and Kawhi Leonard hurt the first part of the season — averaging 22.8 points and 8.7 asissts a game, leading the team to 50 wins and a tie for the 3/4/5 seeds in the West (the Clippers were the fifth seed based on tie breakers and lost in the first round to Denver). Harden also had a $36.7 million player option for next season, but he is turning that down to sign a two-year, $81.5 million contract to remain with the Clippers, a story broken by Shams Charania of ESPN and quickly confirmed by others. The second year of that contract is partially guaranteed and includes a mutual option, which means that if Harden exercises the option (which seems likely), the Clippers can waive him but incur a dead cap hit for the guaranteed portion. This was expected. They needed each other and had nowhere else to turn. Harden was the heart of the Clippers' offense last season and they need him to play at that level again to be competitive next season. For Harden, there wasn't a free agent market for him (only Brooklyn would have the cap space to sign him near the price he is asking, and it is rebuilding, not looking for players who will be 36 by the start of next season). The Clippers wanted him back, but on a short-term deal. Now, Harden and Kawhi Leonard each have two years left on their contracts, as does every other rotation player on the roster, outside of Ivica Zubac, who has three years remaining. The Clippers have set themselves up for a pivot in a couple of seasons (possibly one, as they could start trying to trade players with expiring deals next summer). The Clippers have more business to do this summer: Nicolas Batum opted out of his $4.9 million player option for next season. The Clippers would like to and expect to re-sign him, but that will cost a little more than what he was going to make.

Caitlin Clark named 2025 WNBA All-Star Game captain

captain CC 🤩Caitlin Clark is a #WNBAAllStar2025 captain and two-time All-Star. Caitlin Clark was able to add another ledger to her already impressive resume on Sunday. It was announced that Clark will be a captain at the WNBA All-Star Game, being held in Indianapolis on July 19. She joins Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx as one of two captains for the All-Star Game. The remaining eight starters will be announced on Monday, June 30 and on Tuesday, July 8, Clark and Collier will draft their All-Star rosters for the game. It's the second WNBA All-Star selection in two seasons for Clark, despite only playing in nine of the Fever's 16 games this season after dealing with multiple injuries. In those nine games, Clark is averaging 18.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 8.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game, clearly stats deserving of being an All-Star. Clark and Collier were named captains after receiving the most fan votes. Clark led all players in votes, receiving 1,293,526 fan votes with Collier a close second, receiving 1,176,020 fan votes. Clark's impact on the popularity of the WNBA is easy to see, but CBS Sports really put into perspective by comparing the number of fans voting for All-Stars before and after the arrival of Clark in the league. In 2023, the year before Clark's arrival, A'ja Wilson received the most fan votes with 95,860, and the top-30 players had a combined 1,171,708 votes -- fewer than Clark or Collier got by themselves this time around. -Jack Maloney, CBS Sports. Fans can tune in to see who Clark and Collier draft to their All-Star teams on Tuesday, July 8 at 6 p.m. on ESPN. The WNBA All-Star Game is on Saturday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m. and can be seen on ABC, Disney+ and ESPN+. Texas' Arch Manning recalls advice from Matthew McConaughey at Manning Passing Academy

There are lots of eyes that gravitate toward the starting quarterback at a blue-blood college football program, let alone at a program such as Texas. For first-year starter Arch Manning, there comes even more fame and expectations given his family lineage, having Super Bowl-winning uncles Peyton and Eli Manning, and grandpa Archie Manning, who played in the NFL for 13 years. Arch Manning, speaking to The Athletic in an interview at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana, mentioned receiving advice from one of the most famous Longhorns about his newfound position with the program. "A few. It depends on the night, but I stay pretty low key," Arch Manning told reporters via The Athletic on Friday when asked of how many picture requests he gets on campus. "... I had to get used to it a little bit. I've actually talked to Matthew McConaughey about that. He's given me some advice. He's been great to have in my corner." McConaughey, who's at nearly every Texas Longhorns football game and is known for his role as the team's "Minister of Culture," knows a thing or two about dealing with fame, especially within the context of Austin, Texas, as the Academy Award winner graduated from UT in 1993 and has taught classes at the university. Arch Manning, according to On3's name, image and likeness valuations, is the most valuable college athlete in 2025, as he's worth $6.8 million according to the metric. Arch Manning was even recently featured in a Raising Cane's advertisement alongside his dad, Cooper Manning, Archie Manning and LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. MORE: Steve Spurrier questions Arch Manning as Heisman Trophy favorite, Texas as SEC frontrunner Arch Manning, Cooper Manning, Archie Manning, Garrett Nussmeier, and Todd Graves always stop when they pass a Cane's on their way to @Manning Passing Academy What did McConaughey tell Arch Manning as the former No. 1-ranked quarterback takes over as signal caller in 2025 after two years of being Quinn Ewers' backup? "He's way more known than I am, so it's good anytime you get advice from him," Arch Manning said. "… He kind of told me you still have to live your life. He says he goes to the grocery store, walks down every aisle and he lives his life. You can't let you taking a picture or signing an autograph affect your life." Arch Manning passed for 939 yards with nine touchdowns to two interceptions as a redshirt freshman last season, also rushing for 108 yards and four scores. The 6-foot-4 quarterback threw for 325 yards with two touchdowns in a start against Mississippi State, as he filled in for the injured Ewers. Arch Manning is set to be perhaps the most talked about college athlete across all sports in 2025, and he'll look to remember McConaughey's advice as he aims to get Texas back to the College Football Playoff for the third consecutive year.
