Iraq makes rare seizure of ship suspected of fuel smuggling in Gulf

Zawya19-03-2025

Iraqi naval forces have seized an unidentified ship in Iraqi territorial waters in the Gulf suspected of smuggling fuel, the naval forces said in a statement.
Fuel smuggling is common in Gulf waters, where heavily subsidised fuel from some countries is sold on the black market to buyers across the region, though it is relatively rare for Iraqi authorities to seize ships.
A naval patrol boat intercepted the ship on Tuesday after receiving intelligence about suspected illegal activity, according to the navy statement issued late on Tuesday.
The navy said an Iranian captain, eight Indian nationals, and two Iraqi crew members were onboard the ship.
The navy released a picture of the ship, in which no name was visible. It gave no further details about the vessel.
The ship was towed to Umm Qasr naval base for further investigation, and the crew has been handed over to the local police, the navy said.

Three arrested on charges of raping student inside law college in Kolkata

Indian police have arrested three men accused of gang raping a law student in Kolkata, officials said on Friday, a case that has reignited anger in a city still scarred by the rape and murder of a doctor last year. The survivor said she was assaulted on Wednesday evening inside a room on the college premises, Indian media reported, with the three accused including two current and one former student. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), the ruling party in West Bengal state, said the "full weight of the law will be brought to bear." The case again highlights the chronic issue of sexual violence in the world's most populous country, where an average of nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in 2022. It has also sparked fresh political clashes between the AITC and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP accused the AITC-led state government of failing to protect women. The pictures of Monojit Mishra, one of the three accused in connection with the rape of a law student within the college premises, along with top Trinamool Congress leaders, have started circulating on the social media, with the state BJP leaders sharing them as much as possible. Among the Trinamool Congress leaders with whom Mishra had been seen in the pictures includes the party's General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, West Bengal Minister of State for Finance (independent charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya and the Trinamool Congress Councillor in Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Kajari Banerjee, who is the sister-in-law of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Amit Malviya, BJP's IT Cell Chief and the party's central observers for West Bengal, and the leader of the opposition Assembly Suvendu Adhikari are among the BJP leaders who have shared these pictures on their official X accounts and attacked the Trinamool Congress on this issue. West Bengal had become a "breeding ground for crimes against women," the BJP said in a statement. "State machinery continues to fail its daughters." The AITC rejected the accusations. The assault comes after a Kolkata court in January sentenced the rapist and murderer of a 31-year-old doctor to life in prison. Her killing in August 2024 at a state-run hospital in Kolkata triggered protests, with candlelight marches and nationwide outrage over the continuing violence against women. The brutality of that attack drew comparisons to the 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman on a bus in New Delhi, a crime that shocked the country and led to widespread demonstrations. Heavy Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon kill at least one woman

Israeli fighter jets launched a series of heavy air strikes on the southern Lebanese city of Nabatieh on Friday, killing at least one woman and wounding 20 others, according to the local health ministry. Local media reported that the lethal strike targeted a residential apartment near a teacher training centre. A total of 20 Israeli air strikes were recorded. According to Lebanese state media, Friday's air strikes were "the most intense" on southern Lebanon since the end of the 66-day war last November. Lebanese President Michel Aoun condemned the strikes as part of 'Israel's continued violation of Lebanon's sovereignty and the November ceasefire agreement,' and called for 'a decisive response from the international community". It claimed, without evidence, that the site was part of a damaged underground project that Hezbollah had attempted to repair in recent days. Israel is reported to have violated the November 2024 ceasefire almost daily. As of April, Israeli forces had killed at least 71 people in Lebanon following the ceasefire agreement, according to the United Nations. Friday's attack come after Israel's 12-day bombing campaign on Iran, killing 627 civilians. The Iranian response killed 28 people in Israel, according to local authorities.

Iranian-American group slams arrests of Iranian immigrants in the US

The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) on Thursday called on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to end its "outrageous targeting of individuals on the basis of their Iranian heritage" after an increase in the number of Iranian immigrants taken away to detention centers for deportation. 'In the wake of U.S. military strikes on Iran on Saturday, the Department of Homeland Security has engaged in racial profiling and indiscriminate mass arrests of Iranians across the country, all under the guise of 'national security,'" NIAC said in a statement. Fox News reported that more than 130 Iranian nationals have been detained in the past week, with 670 Iranians now held in ICE custody nationwide. 'As with all broad and racially motivated enforcement actions, everyday people suffer the most. Among those targeted is 64-year-old Donna Kashanian of Louisiana, who has lived in the United States for 47 years and is married to an American citizen," the statement continued. 'Like many Iranian Americans, those arrested often came to the U.S. in search of opportunity and freedom from an authoritarian government. Now, their mere identity now appears to be grounds for arrest in the so-called 'land of the free'". NIAC said it is demanding ICE release "all those who are being unjustly detained".
