Edinburgh locals have been left with 'bleeding ears' after sitting down to watch Netflix's latest detective series.
Department Q, which was filmed right here in the capital and in East Lothian, hit streaming on May 29. It's since become a topic of conversation - and not always for the right reasons.
Many viewers who live in, or know, Edinburgh have been 'really bugged' by one big aspect of the show. Throughout the series, one spot in the city is referenced - which many argue doesn't actually exist.
The characters talk of Leith Park, which has left locals 'really annoyed'. Cast and crew filmed at spots across the city, including Leith Links and the Calders.
It's likely that the decision was made to change links to park, to make sense for a global audience. The term links, in reference to a park or green space, is Scottish - and wouldn't make much sense to viewers other parts of the world.
However, that hasn't stopped residents from pointing out the change. Posting to X, one viewer said: "Watched the first episode, looks good.
"It really bugged me when they kept saying Leith Park - which one Keddie, Vici or what it probably is the Links. Irrational but bugged me."

A second post added: "Just finished episode one and thoroughly enjoyed it (except for the references to Leith Park which made my ears bleed)."
A third said: "Leith Park really annoyed me!"
Edinburgh Comedian Jo Caulfield also highlighted other issues that bothered her husband when viewing the hit series. She posted to X: "Watching Dept Q (set in Edinburgh & Leith) with husband.
"HUSBAND: 'That bus doesn't go to Leith. And that street don't lead to the city council building.' ME: 'Shhhhh.' HUSBAND: 'And that bar is nowhere near that church.'"
Filming for the series took place in Spring last year. Production took over locations including spots in the West End, down at Portobello and at FirstStage Studios in Leith.

It stars Matthew Goode, Chloe Pirrie, Kelly Macdonald, Alexej Manvelov, Shirley Henderson, Kate Dickie and several other big names.
Department Q hit Netflix on Thursday, May 29. It quickly rose to number one position on the streaming platforms TV section.
Variety branded it a 'riveting watch', adding: "'Dept Q is deeply intense and complex."
"Dark with neo-noir elements, the series' central mysteries are riveting, but its characters make it a standout."
Entertainment Weekly described lead actor Matthew Goode as 'grumpy perfection'. They continued: "The mystery comes to a satisfying — if a bit convoluted — conclusion, and Frank certainly leaves things open for more grim (and grimly funny) adventures with his Dept Q misfits down the line."

Netflix's terrifying Amy Bradley documentary has made me think twice about cruises

They're my favourite type of holiday but I realise I've been quite naïve, writes Samantha King My inaugural cruise experience was at the tender age of nine, and I had the joy of ringing in my 10th birthday whilst sailing around the Caribbean. It was a dreamy holiday that ignited a lifelong passion in me for maritime adventures. ‌ This memorable holiday took place just a few years after the mysterious disappearance of Amy Bradley in 1998, a fact unbeknownst to me at the time. The 23-year-old vanished without leaving any trace while on a family holiday aboard Royal Caribbean's Rhapsody of the Seas, and she remains missing to this day. ‌ A fresh Netflix documentary released this month, titled Amy Bradley Is Missing, delves into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the ongoing search efforts that persist. ‌ There's no shortage of theories about what transpired, with TikTok also awash with speculation. The two predominant hypotheses suggest that she either fell overboard following a night of heavy drinking and never washed ashore, or she fell prey to sex trafficking and was clandestinely whisked off the ship. Both theories present compelling evidence but also glaring inconsistencies, as detailed in the Netflix documentary, reports the Mirror US. ‌ The official synopsis states: "On March 23, 1998, 23-year-old Amy Bradley disappears without a trace from the cruise ship she and her family were vacationing on. "Despite thorough searches of the ship, Amy is nowhere to be found and the cruise has already docked in their next port, Curaçao, opening the door for 2,400 passengers to explore the island and allowing Amy to potentially disappear into the crowd. ‌ "As the years pass by, possible sightings of Amy pop up in various locations from multiple people. Is it really her? Was this a tragic accident or a crime? - anything is possible. But for Amy's family - only one thing matters: bringing their daughter home alive." Now at 30, with four cruise holidays to my name, I've always been struck by the sense that a cruise ship is a world unto itself, blissfully detached from the pressures and problems that loom onshore. ‌ What had never crossed my mind was the potential peril of this, especially how a floating metropolis in international waters can be somewhat of a lawless realm until docking. As one individual in a documentary put it: "If you ever want to kill somebody, take them on a cruise." The three-part series about Amy Bradley's vanishing act opened my eyes to my own naivety. To me, a cruise was a sanctuary, a haven populated by fellow holidaymakers with good intentions. In my youth, my parents shared this belief, comfortable with letting me roam the vessel solo. But what if there was someone with ill intent aboard? What if, as an adult, I overindulged and accidentally tumbled into the ocean unnoticed? While the truth behind Amy Bradley's fate remains a mystery – and may always be – the various theories that have surfaced underscore the genuine dangers travellers face. Will I set foot on a cruise liner again? I'm beginning to question if I will.

Pals of teen who fell to his death at Ibiza Rocks raise £4,000 for his family

Scots ice hockey star Gary Kelly, 19, tragically fell to his death at Ibiza Rocks Hotel on Monday morning - the second Scottish tourist to die at the hotel in a fortnight. A fundraiser to support the family of a Scottish teenager who died after plunging from the third floor at Ibiza Rocks Hotel has raised more than £4,000 in just five hours. ‌ Gary Kelly, 19, died instantly in the fall at the four-star hotel on the party island during the early hours of Monday. Two ambulances were sent to the scene but paramedics say there was nothing they could do to save him. ‌ ‌ Holidaymaker 26-year-old Evan Thomson, from Aberdeen, died at the hotel under similar circumstances just two weeks ago. Gary's family has been left heartbroken by the events, which are being investigated by British police. ‌ A fundraiser has since been set up in his name to support his loved ones. A statement on the GoFundMe reads: "We are all feeling the loss of young Gary Kelly. And I know you can't put a price on life "But hopefully we can help the family through this as a nicer young man and family you would struggle to find." ‌ Tributes flooded in from Gary as the news broke of his untimely death earlier this week. Writing online, his sister Kharis Kelly said: "Our hearts are shattered beyond words. Our handsome boy has gone to the other side, Absolutely no words. We are asking everyone to respect our privacy as a family while we try to navigate through this tragic news. You'll forever be our boy Gary, Sleep tight." ‌ His girlfriend Louise Essery published a tribute to Gary, who she described as inspirational across every area of his life. She said: "I never thought I would be sat here writing a goodbye. For those who knew Gary, oh you were so lucky. His passion and dedication was inspiring, whether in hockey, work, or with loved ones. I'm struggling to understand how you are no longer with me. "It hasn't really hit me yet. Gary taught and showed me valuable lessons that I'll carry with me forever. I think it's important to remember the good times and to celebrate the love he brought into our lives." ‌ Gary, who played ice hockey for both Dundee Stars and Aberdeen Lynx last season, was remembered as a 'hugely talented and charismatic individual'. A statement from Dundee Stars said: 'We are truly devastated to learn that Gary Kelly has tragically passed away. We send our thoughts and condolences to Gary's family, partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time. 'Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken to hear this tragic news. Gary was a hugely talented and charismatic individual who had a great future ahead of him. ‌ 'His loss will impact many in the ice hockey community and beyond. He will be sadly missed. We respect and support the family's request for privacy at this extremely difficult time.' A spokesman for the Civil Guard said: 'The fall could be accidental based on the early information obtained from cameras but as part of the investigation possible witnesses will need to be located and interviewed. The results of the post-mortem will also be important to the investigation.' ‌ Ibiza Rocks has since suspended all events in the wake of the two tragedies. A statement from the hotel on Monday afternoon read: "We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred. "Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations. ‌ "The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority. Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time. "All customers will be informed directly via email." Donate to the fundraiser here.

Netflix admits it used AI to make ‘amazing' scene in hit TV show – but did YOU spot it?

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) NETFLIX has admitted to using generative AI to create visual effects in a new original TV show - are you able to spot it? The streaming giant confirmed the move in its latest earnings call, with co-CEO Ted Sarandos saying they traded in traditional VFX for generative AI in one scene. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 The Eternaut began airing on Netflix in April Credit: Netflix Doing so was not only faster, but much cheaper than outsourcing the shot to a traditional VFX house, Engadget first reported. Creators of the sci-fi Netflix original, The Eternaut, wanted a collapsing building sequence to anchor a key moment in the story. But to detail such a scene would have required VFX that was apparently out of budget for the Argentine post-apocalyptic drama. "Using AI-powered tools, they were able to achieve an amazing result with remarkable speed," Sarandos said. READ MORE ON AI PER-FUMING Gobsmacked Molly-Mae targeted by AI scam as she issues warning to fans "In fact, that VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with... traditional VFX tools and workflows." Sarandos added that the shot "just wouldn't have been feasible for a show on that budget." Generative AI, or Gen AI, is a type of artificial intelligence that can create text, images, music, and videos from prompts given to it by humans. This content can be in all kinds of style - cartoonish, or even hyper-realistic, and therefore difficult to distinguish from real life. Netflix has reportedly got plans to roll out AI-generated adverts for ad-tier subscribers in 2026. The company is also testing a new search feature powered by OpenAI models, according to Bloomberg. Hugely popular Netflix show is ENDING after seven years – leaving fans devastated But The Eternaut marks a milestone, becoming "the very first Gen AI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix original series or film," Sarandos said. The shift towards generative AI is already happening within Hollywood. Films like 10-time Oscar nominee The Brutalist and Late Night with the Devil faced backlash for even light AI involvement. The issue is already on the radar of SAG-AFTRA, a union whose members went on strike against AI use in video games last summer. "The video game industry generates billions of dollars in profit annually. The driving force behind that success is the creative people who design and create those games," SAG-AFTRA president, Fran Drescher, said at the time. "That includes the SAG-AFTRA members who bring memorable and beloved game characters to life, and they deserve and demand the same fundamental protections as performers in film, television, streaming and music: fair compensation and the right of informed consent for the AI use of their faces, voices and bodies."
