‘Parking' wins big, while GV Prakash bags Best Music Composer for ‘Vaathi'
Parking won awards under the Best Tamil Film and Best Screenplay categories. Meanwhile, the film's lead MS Bhaskar won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award, an honour he shares with actor Vijayaraghavan for the Malayalam film Pookkaalam.
Also starring Harish Kalyan, Induja Ravichandran, Prathana Nathan and Rama Rajendra, Parking told an intriguing story of two tenants of a house whose egos clash over a parking spot. The film was produced under the Passion Studios and Soldiers Factory production banners.
Meanwhile, GV Prakash's Vaathi, starring Dhanush, was one of the most popular albums of 2023. In particular, 'Vaa Vaathi,' sung by Shweta Mohan and written by Dhanush, ruled the playlists of fans. Notably, this is Prakash's second National Award; the composer won under the same category at the 68th National Film Awards for the movie Soorarai Pottru.
Post the announcement, an elated Prakash expressed his gratitude in a statement he shared on X. 'A blessing for the second time. I'm truly overwhelmed and deeply grateful,' wrote Prakash, before conveying his gratitude to the jury and the team of Vaathi. 'Special thanks to my brother Dhanush, who chose me for this film. Our continuous collaboration-from Polladhavan to Asuran, Vaathi, and Idly Kadai, has been creatively fulfilling and rewarding for both of us.
'A big thank you to my director Venky Atluri, who inspired me to give my best and trusted me with the music for this film. From Vaathi to Lucky Bhaskar, and now onto our next project - thank you, Venky, for the consistent trust and for bringing blockbuster moments into our journey,' added Prakash.
Coming to the non-feature film categories, Saravanamaruthu Soundarapandi and Meenakshi Soman won the National Award for Best Cinematography for the film Little Wings, directed by Naveen Mu.
Notably, Timeless Tamil Nadu, directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, won the Best Art/Culture Film award. The English-language documentary was produced by Celebrities Management Private Limited in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Tourism and Travel XP.

After National Film Awards were announced last week, there has been a lot of chatter around some of the winners — including Shah Rukh Khan as the Best Actor, The Kerala Story director Sudipto Sen, and even the Best Supporting Actress award to Urvashi for Christo Tomy's Malayalam film Ullozhukku. Now, television actor Rupali Ganguly, best known for her titular role in Anupamaa, has pointed out how there should be National Awards for the TV industry too. 'There are National Awards for everyone, from content creators to regional films. But there's nothing for TV artistes. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, others had the advantage of delaying their shooting schedules and not step out of their homes, but we kept working,' said Ganguly. In the interview to Viral Bhayani, she added, 'When a film star works continuously for two days, it makes headlines. But no one talked about how we, the TV artists, worked non-stop from 6 am to 6 pm during the pandemic. I request the government to consider us also. We work very hard. It'll be nice to have some validation.' Ganguly also pointed out how BJP member and former I&B Minister Smriti Irani's return to television can help accelerate the process of institutionalizing and organizing National Awards for the TV industry. 'I'm so glad that Smriti ji has come back. It's such a validation for a person of that stature to come back to the medium. It'll make a difference. It may help us go in that direction because we need National Awards for TV actors too,' added Ganguly. Over the past couple of weeks, fans of Anupamaa have been pitting Ganguly against Irani as the latter returns in the iconic role of Tulsi Virani in the reboot of Ekta Kapoor's seminal daily soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. On the day of the latter's premiere, channel StarPlus released a crossover promo in which Anupamaa is seen video calling Tulsi and welcoming her back to the small screen. Ekta also dismissed the comparison between Anupamaa and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. 'I felt that was in such bad taste. She [Rupali] is such a big star. Anupamaa the show, the creator Raajan (Shahi)… has done what nobody else could do in the last seven years. They will continue to be number 1. They should continue to be number 1,' Kapoor told Brut. Malayalam poet Thampi backs Adoor Gopalakrishnan in film funding row, says camera is not toy
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 5 (PTI) Veteran Malayalam poet, lyricist and filmmaker Sreekumaran Thampi on Tuesday came out strongly in support of acclaimed director Adoor Gopalakrishnan amid a row over the latter's remarks on government funding for filmmakers from marginalised communities. Defending Gopalakrishnan, Thampi said the Dadasaheb Phalke awardee is one of the greatest living filmmakers in the world and questioned the criticism against his recent comments. 'What is wrong with his statements? The government is giving ₹ 1.5 crore to promote filmmakers from marginalised sections—that's public money,' Thampi told reporters here. He said there was nothing inappropriate in suggesting that eligibility be assessed before disbursing such funds. 'We cannot simply give away public money. What is wrong with saying the fund should be provided after giving them necessary training in filmmaking?' he asked. Thampi also clarified that Gopalakrishnan did not single out women or Dalit filmmakers. 'He only said that those receiving government funding should have adequate knowledge about cinema. Camera is not a toy,' he added. The veteran director also criticised playback singer Pushpavati, who protested from the audience while Gopalakrishnan was speaking at a government-organised film conclave on Sunday. 'It was wrong to interrupt him during his speech. That was ignorance. She could have spoken after he finished,' Thampi claimed. He added that he was unfamiliar with Pushpavati, despite reporters informing him of her credentials. 'She once came to take a selfie with me at a railway station, but I still don't know who she is,' he said. In response, Pushpavati told a TV channel that she holds Sreekumaran Thampi in high regard and did not wish to comment further. The controversy erupted after Gopalakrishnan said that the Kerala State Film Development Corporation's (KSFDC) practice of offering ₹ 1.5 crore to filmmakers from marginalised communities had not "yielded the intended results." He suggested that such aspiring filmmakers should first undergo training from experts before receiving financial support. On Monday, Gopalakrishnan defended his remarks, stating that his intention was to empower new filmmakers and enhance their technical competence.
