New head coach, quarterback dubbed Saints' best reason for optimism in 2025
Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox recently went through what he believed to be each team's 'biggest reason for optimism' in 2025. For the Saints, it was the fact that they are going to have a new head coach and quarterback after last year's disappointment. Here's some of what Knox wrote to explain that call:
Moore isn't a proven head coach, but he's had multiple successful stints as an offensive coordinator. The Saints don't have an established quarterback yet, but they'll have an intriguing competition between youngsters Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough.
It remains to be seen whether these changes will yield positive results. However, they do mean that the days of trying to contend with a holdover head coach and bridge quarterbacks like Carr and Jameis Winston are over.
Dennis Allen took over once Sean Payton left and had a rough couple of years at the helm. Fans were calling for him to be fired well before he did, and he was only in charge for two and a half years. The best record of his tenure was 9-8 and that team failed to make the playoffs. Things did not seem to be improving under him, so getting a fresh face in town could be fun.
Kellen Moore isn't the most explosive personality in the league, but he is coming off a Super Bowl run with the Philadelphia Eagles and is a great offensive mind. At worst, fans should be able to look forward to more consistency on that side of the field. There is an excitement of the unknown in the first year of an NFL coach's career at the helm.
The change at quarterback will be even more exciting for many, given that Derek Carr had become public enemy number one within the fan base before his retirement. There were flashes of greatness, namely the first two games of 2024, but the consistency was a massive issue.
Even though the quarterback play might not be better right away, two young quarterbacks are going to make a push for playing time next season in Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough. Similar to the unknown with Moore, it will be fun to see how these young passers separate themselves and compete in training camp.

NHL Analyst Outlines Scenario for Possible Sidney Crosby Trade
NHL Analyst Outlines Scenario for Possible Sidney Crosby Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Amid mounting speculation about a potential Pittsburgh Penguins trade involving captain and franchise icon Sidney Crosby, nothing has materialized yet. And according to the latest reports, it's likely that nothing happens on that front at least through next season. Explaining his view of the situation on his Bleacher Report podcast, NHL insider Frank Seravalli said any possible trade involving Crosby likely won't happen until the 2026 offseason — at the earliest. "I think 'eventually' might be the key word there," Seravalli said. "I could see it. I think it's still a real long shot. Mostly because I think we're taking Sidney Crosby — I think you have to take him at his own word. He wants to be a Pittsburgh Penguin. He wants to finish his career in Pittsburgh." Explaining what it might take to see Crosby leave Pittsburgh, Seravalli pointed to teammate Evgeni Malkin's likely departure once his contract is over next offseason as a potential turning point. That said, Seravalli emphasized that nothing is imminent and that Crosby might still want to remain with the Penguins after Malkin is gone. "I think one thing to keep an eye on here is that Crosby has been really focused on playing out this run with Evgeni Malkin at forward," Seravalli said. "Particularly, those guys have had so much success together, they're so close, that I think with Malkin's deal expiring at the end of this upcoming season, that maybe that presents a window or an opening where he reconsiders or something different happens." Crosby, who will turn 38 next month, continues to perform at an elite level and has two years left on his contract. He recorded 91 points in 80 regular-season games last season, yet the Penguins missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year. If Crosby gets traded, according to Seravalli, that won't happen in-season. On top of that, the insider believes this is not the offseason for a Crosby trade. "I also don't see this being an in-season trade," Seravalli said. "So I would think that if it's going to happen, that it would be in an offseason, and definitely not this one." Alvin Kamara's walk-off touchdown run is the Saints Play of Day 49
We're down to 49 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 regular season opener, which means this 49-yard walk-off touchdown run by Alvin Kamara is our pick for the Saints Play of the Day. Kamara had a big day against the New York Giants back in 2018, scoring three rushing touchdowns while gaining 181 yards from scrimmage. But he called game to hand the Giants a loss with a late touchdown run from halfway across the field. You can see it for yourself right here. The Saints were guarding a tight 8-point lead with 2:16 left in regulation; they weren't in position to run out the clock just yet, and the Giants could rally back to tie it up and force overtime. But Kamara wasn't about to let that happen. He took the handoff at midfield, found a crease in the New York secondary thanks to some key blocking from fullback Zach Line and tight end Josh Hill, and was gone. Free safety Curtis Riley tried to stop him but took a stiff arm to the face for his trouble. Three more Giants closed in, but they were too late to keep Kamara from running into the end zone. But he didn't stop there. Kamara kept running through the back of the end zone and into the MetLife Stadium tunnel with wide receiver Michael Thomas right beside him. The pair of playmakers descended into the arena, away from fans and the opposing team, sending a clear message: that's all, folks.

Chiefs' Rashee Rice Participating in Training Camp Despite Jail Sentence
Rashee Rice will be a full participant in training camp, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Sunday, three days after the standout wide receiver was sentenced to 30 days in jail after authorities said he and another speeding driver caused a chain-reaction crash that left multiple people injured on a Dallas highway last year. Whether he will be able to fully participate in the regular season remains to be seen. Reid said on the eve of camp beginning that he has not been told by the NFL whether Rice will serve a suspension, though it is widely expected. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy acknowledged last week "we have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review." "We're going to progress as normal with him," Reid said on the campus of Missouri Western State University. "He'll go in and take all the reps that he'll normally take. We always rotate that position. Depending on what happens here with the future — whoever needs to play will step in and know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it." Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury in the March 30, 2024, crash. As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors said, Rice was sentenced to five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail as a condition of his probation. The Dallas County District Attorney's Office said that the 25-year-old Rice, who will have some flexibility regarding when he must serve the jail time, was also required to pay the victims for their out-of-pocket medical expenses, which totaled about $115,000. Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at 119 mph when he made "multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic" and struck other vehicles, prosecutors said. After the crash on North Central Expressway, prosecutors said Rice failed to check on the welfare of those in the other vehicles and fled on foot. Rice said in a statement issued by his attorney that he's had "a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole." Rice got off to a flying start to his second NFL season last year, catching 24 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns in his first three games. But in Week 4, after Patrick Mahomes had thrown an interception, the quarterback accidentally dived into Rice's leg as they were trying to make the tackle, tearing the lateral collateral ligament in his knee. Rice wound up missing the rest of the season, which culminated in a loss to Philadelphia in the Super Bowl. After spending the season rehabbing the injury, Rice was able to participate in the Chiefs' offseason program, and Reid said he would not be limited by the injury in training camp. That begins with testing and meetings on Tuesday, followed by the first full-squad workout on Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to hit triple digits. "We'll keep an eye on that," Reid said of Rice's knee injury. "As far as pulling back because of suspensions or whatever, you know, we're going forward. And then we'll monitor him as far as (the injury) goes." Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
