Alabama football 2025 season preview, predictions: Noah Carter

USA Today2 days ago
A defensive prospect who was a new face to Tuscaloosa last season, could this mark a breakout year for Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker Noah Carter?
One of the first prep commits of the Kalen DeBoer era, Carter was previously a long-time pledge to the Washington Huskies, but decommitted to eventually end up following the head coach to Tuscaloosa.
With a year of collegiate experience now, Carter enters 2025 looking to make an impact as a redshirt freshman in a loaded Alabama outside linebacker room.
Here is everything you need to know about Alabama linebacker Noah Carter entering the 2025 season.
Noah Carter player information
Noah Carter career stats
Carter was a new face to college football last season, appearing in only three games for the Crimson Tide as a true freshman. Last season, Carter amassed two total tackles.
Noah Carter 2024 stats
As mentioned previously, Carter appeared in only three games a year ago for the Crimson Tide as a true freshman. Carter had two tackles, both of which came against Western Kentucky.
Noah Carter recruiting ranking
According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Carter was considered as the nation's No. 109 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class, as well as the No. 9 edge rusher nationally. A four-star prospect who committed to Alabama in Jan. 2024, Carter was also considered the No. 2 player in the state of Arizona where he attended Centennial High School.
Noah Carter 2025 season outlook
Yet another option to make an impact at outside linebacker, Carter is a name to watch for in 2025 when it comes to potential breakout candidates on defense.
At Alabama's "Wolf" position, the Crimson Tide will return a 2024 starter in Qua Russaw, as well as other top backup options such as Jah-Marien Latham and Yhonzae Pierre. Also in that group is Carter, who is alongside others that could end emerging into larger roles as the season progresses.
Overall, expect Carter to see some time defensively, but for a majority of the outside linebacker's impact to actually come on special teams.

5-star Ohio State football priority running back target sets new commitment date

The Ohio State football program is looking to put the finishing touches on its 2026 recruiting class, and there's one huge 5-star running back target it would love to land. Out of the same school as Jeremiah Smith, Chaminade-Madonna, Derek Cooper will announce his commitment on Sunday, July 20 at 7 p.m. ET. Cooper had his commitment date set originally for July 12, but postponed it and now appears ready to announce where he'll play college. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Cooper is ranked as the No. 2 athlete and 29th overall prospect in the class. Though he is listed as an athlete, he'll be a running back when he straps on the helmet in college, and the Buckeyes hope it's a silver one. If Ohio State is to land the blue-chip talent, it'll have to win out over Florida State, Georgia, Miami (FL), and Texas. And, to be honest, it'll be a bit of an upset for the Florida native to stray too far from home. He is considered a Hurricane lean, but that hasn't seemed to matter these days with NIL and all of that. Regardless, one can hope. OSU lost one of its commitments on Wednesday, and it would be great to land one of the best players in the country to get some more momentum for a class that currently sits in the top ten but has had several losses recently on the recruiting trail. What Did Kalen DeBoer Say About the Alabama Quarterback Battle?

Kalen DeBoer didn't offer a definitive answer, but he did shed some light on the competition that's drawing national attention. Speaking Wednesday at SEC Media Days in Atlanta, the second-year Alabama head coach addressed the Crimson Tide's ongoing quarterback battle, offering early impressions of returning veteran Ty Simpson, as well as young talents Keelon Russell and Austin Mack. "They have the tools," DeBoer said. "Ty throws a catchable ball. He's smart. He's been in college football now, going into year four. ... He's really owned things I think on another level." Simpson, a redshirt junior, is considered the frontrunner entering fall camp after Jalen Milroe's departure to the NFL. He's one of the few quarterbacks on the roster with in-game SEC experience and has taken first-team reps throughout the spring and early summer. But DeBoer also made it clear that competition remains open. On true freshman Keelon Russell, he said, "I'm confident he's going to make big jumps as well." Russell, a late flip from SMU, arrived in Tuscaloosa with a strong five-star reputation and is already turning some heads with his development. Another name to watch is redshirt sophomore Austin Mack, who transferred from Washington and followed DeBoer to Alabama. DeBoer praised Mack's leadership qualities, noting that he brings "a presence" to the room. DeBoer didn't tip his hand, but his remarks suggest the Tide will give each option a real shot before naming a starter. Alabama Linebacker Fires Back at Florida State Quarterback Over Offseason Comments

The Alabama–Florida State opener on August 30 was already one of the most anticipated matchups of the 2025 college football season. Now, it has a little more edge to it. Crimson Tide linebacker Deontae Lawson responded Wednesday at SEC Media Days to offseason remarks made by Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos, who openly questioned Alabama's ability to stop him in their upcoming season-opening clash in Tallahassee. "I won't forget what he said," Lawson told reporters. "None of the talk matters. None of anything matters other than what happens in between them lines. Obviously, fired up, I'm fired up just to be able to play again." In June, Castellanos stirred attention when he told On3Sports that he expects to dominate the Alabama defense. "I'm excited, man," Castellanos said. "People, I don't know if they know, but you go back and watch every first game that I played in, we always start fast. I dreamed of moments like this. I dreamed of playing against Alabama. They don't have Nick Saban to save them. I just don't see them stopping me." Lawson made it clear the Tide has taken notice. "I wouldn't say [it gives] extra motivation, but it's definitely on the back of your mind," Lawson said with a smile. "I definitely noticed it. How can you miss it?... All disrespect will be addressed accordingly. I'll stand on that right there." For Castellanos and the Seminoles, it's a chance to back up the offseason talk with a statement performance. For Alabama, it's already become personal. This'll be one to watch, folks.
