New Metro City Convention Centre set to boost Matang's economy, event scene
KUCHING (June 6): The newly established Metro City Convention Centre (MCCC) in Matang is set to become a key driver of local economic growth and a landmark event venue in the area, said Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
Located on previously undeveloped land, the centre was developed by Sustainable Management Sdn Bhd and features a modular canopy structure – the first of its kind in Kuching.
'This initiative reflects the creativity and commitment of the private sector in supporting local economic development,' Fazzrudin said during the soft launch of MCCC today, in conjunction with the Modern Living Home Expo, which runs through Sunday.
He noted that MCCC provides an alternative to the existing Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), offering a more flexible, high-capacity, and cost-effective venue for organisers and exhibitors.
With a maximum capacity of up to 10,000 people, the centre is now one of the largest event spaces in Sarawak.
Fazzrudin added that the modular design enables reduced construction costs and more competitive rental rates compared to permanent structures.
'Our economy is driven by the private sector, and when complemented by support from the government, we can achieve meaningful synergy,' he said.
He further stressed the strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors in spurring economic growth.
'Economic growth not only creates jobs but also increases disposable income within the community,' he said.
The chief political secretary to Sarawak Premier also pointed out that MCCC would generate economic spillover effects across various sectors, particularly benefitting the food and beverage industry, retail businesses, and vendors at the Metro City Night Market.
'When a major event takes place here, visitors won't just attend the expo – they'll explore nearby food stalls, furniture shops, and other local outlets,' he said.
'This will directly benefit small traders and the surrounding community,' he added.
The developer, according to him, has future plans to convert MCCC into a permanent concrete structure based on its performance and public reception.

Hon Fook Peng KOTA KINABALU (July 4): The Sabah state government's decision to position poultry farming as a core pillar of its agricultural revolution reflects both foresight and firm commitment to food security. This initiative also brings renewed hope and opportunities for local food industry players. Under the leadership of Datuk Dexter Lau, the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah has been actively promoting the development of the local agricultural value chain and food production sector. Committee member and founder of the A1 Chicken Rice restaurant chain, Benny Hon Fook Peng, said the vision outlined by Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey — to make Sabah the country's largest poultry-producing state — is a strategically significant move. It will not only enhance Sabah's food security but also offer broad and long-term development potential for local F&B operators and rural communities. 'As players in the F&B sector, we've long struggled with volatile costs, inconsistent supply, and heavy reliance on external sources. I fully welcome this policy direction. It is expected to boost local poultry supply, encourage more stable pricing mechanisms, and build a more resilient supply chain,' Hon said in a statement today. He noted that consistent supply and quality of chicken meat are critical factors for the sustainability of chicken rice businesses. 'As a local chicken rice operator in Sabah, if we can obtain a steady supply of high-quality poultry especially meat that meets Halal certification standards — we'll be able to maintain food quality and pricing while better serving a diverse customer base. 'Chicken rice may seem like a humble dish, but behind it lies the livelihood of countless business owners and daily consumers. What we serve is not just a meal — it is job creation, community economic stimulation, Halal food culture promotion, and a reflection of Sabah's warm and hospitable spirit.' Hon further explained that if Sabah's poultry industry could develop in a large-scale, standardized, and Halal-compliant manner, it would not only meet the growing demands of local Muslim consumers but also position Sabah to export Halal poultry products to ASEAN and Middle Eastern markets. He emphasized, 'I believe that if this agricultural revolution is strategically implemented and systematically advanced, it will not only strengthen Sabah's food security, but also create a new economic ecosystem around poultry farming — including processing, cold-chain logistics, feed production, packaging, veterinary services, and more — offering diversified employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for Sabah's youth.' As a committee member of MCCC Sabah, he also urged the government to maintain close dialogue with industry players and business chambers when rolling out policies. 'For policies to take root, they must be grounded in reality. We hope the government will address the operational challenges faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and introduce support such as financing assistance, smallholder training, Halal certification guidance, market linkage platforms, and logistics subsidies — ensuring benefits at all levels.' He added that MCCC Sabah will continue to play its role as a bridge, helping member companies connect with government resources, training opportunities, and Halal compliance standards — working together to build a vibrant future for Sabah's food and agriculture sector. Hon concluded, 'This is a highly promising beginning. Sarawakian students welcome RM200 monthly SRAS assistance

KUCHING (June 18): The Sarawak Rental Assistance Scheme (SRAS), which provides RM200 per month to eligible students, has been well received by Sarawakian students enrolled in higher learning institutions across the state. According to Chief Political Secretary to the Premier Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, many students have applied for the scheme, which is implemented by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), following its introduction during outreach programmes at local public and private universities. 'We are pleased to learn from HDC that after our first outreach session, they received a significant number of applications, many of which already been approved,' he said during a press conference at the Sarawak Education Initiative Programme held at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Hall (DeTar Putra), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), yesterday. The programme is part of a wider state-led effort to raise awareness about various government assistance schemes and improve public access to them. 'For this series, we are focusing on education-related initiatives,' said Fazzrudin, adding that more sessions will be held at other campuses across Sarawak, following previous engagements at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM). 'This scheme isn't new, but many students may have been unaware of it previously. Our role now is to bridge that gap and ensure these benefits reach them directly.' When asked whether the scheme would be extended to Sarawakian students studying outside the state, Fazzrudin said such suggestion would be compiled as feedback for the relevant agencies and the Premier. Meanwhile, Unimas deputy vice-chancellor (Student and Alumni Affairs) Prof Dr Al-Khalid Othman expressed appreciation for the SRAS initiative, noting that more than half of the university's students are Sarawakians, with around 6,000 coming from B40 (low-income) households. 'Students generally pay between RM450 and RM500 per semester for accommodation, depending on room type. This assistance goes a long way in reducing their financial burden,' he said. He also welcomed a separate contribution of RM40,000 from the state government to support the campus food bank programme, aimed at helping students from low-income households.
