Delhi to trial run cloud seeding to combat smog menace

India Gazettea day ago
New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): In a bid to tackle the city's worsening air pollution, Delhi's Environment Minister Majinder Singh Sirsa announced a trial run of artificial rain through cloud seeding, set to commence between late August and early September, with five tests planned to assess its efficacy against smog, particularly during Diwali and September.
'We have been successful in securing permission for artificial rain through cloud seeding... We will run the trial between the end of August and the first week of September. We will conduct five trials to learn if it could be efficient against the smog that collects during Diwali or in September,' he said.
On May 7, the Delhi cabinet on Wednesday passed a historic decision to conduct cloud seeding, also known as artificial rain, in the national capital to mitigate pollution. Pollution has been a serious concern for the state for some time, and to help curb it, the cabinet has taken a significant step in partnership with IIT Kanpur, according to a member.
The activity is planned to be conducted in the last week of May, after the cabinet has obtained all the necessary permissions from various departments and stakeholders.
The exercise will be conducted in partnership with IIT Kanpur, and their Aircraft, a Cessna, will be used for the purpose. The Delhi government plans to conduct five trials in the outer area of the national capital.
The cost for one-time rain will account for 66 lakhs, and the operational cost will be 55 lakhs. The total cost for the entire trial plan can go up to 2 crores 55 lakhs.
The aim of the Delhi government is to mitigate pollution in the national capital to achieve its goal of a Viksit Delhi.
Pollution remains a pressing concern in Delhi, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) often reaching very poor levels. Although several projects have been undertaken in the past to address this issue, none have provided a lasting solution to Delhi's pollution problem. (ANI)

He didn't shake hands: Angela Merkel calls Donald Trump attention-seeker; recalls incident from 2017

Donald Trump (left), Angela Merkel (ANI, AP) Former German chancellor Angela Merkel called US President Donald Trump an attention-seeker, while speaking at an event organised by Greek newspaper Kathimerini in Athens on Wednesday. Merkel was attending an event to promote the Greek edition of her memoir 'Freedom' when she recalled an incident from March 2017. At a meeting with Donald Trump in the Oval Office, he refused to shake hands with her, an incident that took place off-camera, outside the main room. "I made the mistake of saying, 'Donald, we should shake hands,' and he didn't. He wanted to draw attention to himself. That's what he wants: to distract and have everyone look at him,' Merkel said. "You can see this in what he is doing with the tariffs. Ultimately, he must deliver good results for the American people. He has to prove his abilities, at least to his own country,' she added. She went on to urge the European Union to stand up to Trump's tariff threats and not be intimidated. 'Europeans must stand united and not be intimidated when Trump imposes more tariffs on the bloc, but we should retaliate with tariffs of our own.' "I'm not saying we should break off relations with the US, but we must negotiate. Even the US cannot survive alone,' Merkel said, adding: 'I see a problematic development. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo When Vice President Vance says, 'we are partners, and we will only support you if you agree with our concept of freedom,' which means no rules and no controls, that is indeed a threat to our democracy." Merkel was at the helm of European affairs as the de-facto leader of the EU during Trump's first Presidency, but the pair never had an easy rapport. Describing this often-strained equation, she wrote about Trump in her memoir: 'He judged everything from the perspective of the property entrepreneur he had been before politics. Each property could only be allocated once. If he didn't get it, someone else did. That was also how he looked at the world. ' 'For him, all countries were in competition with each other, in which the success of one was the failure of the other; he did not believe that the prosperity of all could be increased through co-operation.'

Shivraj Chouhan says 5 lakh PMAY beneficiaries in J&K to be provided houses soon

Omar Abdullah and Shivraj Singh Chouhan (ANI photo) SRINAGAR: With chief minister Omar Abdullah sitting next to him, Union minister for agriculture and rural development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday said nearly five lakh people in Jammu and Kashmir did not own a house, and they would be allotted one soon. Addressing a press conference, Chouhan said the allotment of 93% of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in J&K had been completed, and the remaining eligible beneficiaries had been identified. 'In a recent survey, five lakh names have been identified as deserving housing. The allotments will be made soon after the verification process,' he said. Under the LG-led administration earlier, Omar had questioned the criteria for identifying the housing scheme beneficiaries in J&K. 'Before allotting land, govt must clarify whom it considers 'homeless',' he had said in July 2023. He had made it clear that he was opposed to the inclusion of those who came to Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 under this scheme. J&K parties have in the past accused the Centre of attempting to settle 'outsiders' in Kashmir. Chouhan emphasised that a developed J&K was crucial to PM Narendra Modi's vision of a 'Viksit Bharat'. He praised the state's initiative, 'Kisan Khidmat Ghar' — a one-stop centre providing farmers access to all agricultural services under one roof. The minister said farmers in the UT who had received land allotments from govt but lacked official documentation would be considered for inclusion under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. Govt was also planning to launch the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme soon to ensure that horticulture crops were accurately mapped and included under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana, he added. Chouhan expressed satisfaction with the variety of horticulture crops grown in the region, but also raised a critical issue of imported plant materials often turning out to be infected after two or three years. To address this, a Rs 150-crore Clean Plant Centre would be established in Srinagar under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, he said. 'It will focus on clean, disease-free planting material for apples, almonds, walnuts and berries. Private nurseries will also be supported to ensure high-quality, pathogen-free plants are made available to farmers,' he added. Calling 'saffron' a symbol of Kashmir's identity, Chouhan announced that the Centre would establish a tissue culture lab and nursery to boost its production. He said the National Saffron Mission would be revised to suit local conditions, and an expert team of scientists would be formed to improve productivity and reduce losses.
