‘Never heard that': Donald Trump says he's unaware ‘shylock' is considered anti-Semitic; faces backlash

'I've never heard it that way. To me, Shylock is somebody that's a money lender at high rates,' Trump spoke to reporters after stepping off Air Force One. 'I've never heard it that way, you view it differently than me. I've never heard that.'

rump was heading back to Washington after the event in Iowa that marked the start of nationwide celebrations for the country's 250th anniversary, which will take place next year.
In his speech, he used the word while highlighting parts of the major domestic policy bill that Congress had passed just a few hours earlier.
"Think of that: No death tax. No estate tax. No going to the banks and borrowing from, in some cases, a fine banker - and in some cases, Shylocks and bad people,' he said during remarks at an Iowa rally.
The term 'Shylock' comes from the character in William Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice.
In the play, Shylock is a Jewish moneylender known for being harsh and demanding, famously insisting on a 'pound of flesh' from a merchant named Antonio if a loan wasn't repaid.
"The term 'Shylock' evokes a centuries-old antisemitic trope about Jews and greed that is extremely offensive and dangerous. President Trump's use of the term is very troubling and irresponsible," the Anti-Defamation League said in a post on X.

'It underscores how lies and conspiracies about Jews remain deeply entrenched in our country. Words from our leaders matter and we expect more from the President of the United States,' the organisation added.
US Representative Dan Goldman, a Jewish Democrat, said, "This is blatant and vile antisemitism, and Trump knows exactly what he's doing."
Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, said in a post on social media, 'Shylock is among the most quintessential antisemitic stereotypes. This is not an accident. It follows years in which Trump has normalized antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories - and it's deeply dangerous.'

Hyderabad: Telangana Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Sunday slammed the state BJP leaders for writing letters to the state government over its alleged failures. Day after newly-appointed BJP state president Ramchander Rao wrote a letter to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, alleging non-fulfilment of promises made by the Congress party, the minister launched a counter-attack with an open reply to the BJP. Ponnam Prabhakar said that it's ironic that those who "failed" to get even one paisa for the state from the Centre, were writing letters to them. He described the BJP government at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "mega failure". He alleged that the BJP backtracked on all the promises made to people in the last three elections. The minister said that the BJP government has a long list of "failures". "It's laughable that leaders of such a party are writing letters to the chief minister," he said. "Apart from making grand promises, inciting hatred, and spreading lies, you have done nothing. Farmers, youth, women, the poor, SC, ST, BC, minorities... you have a history of deceiving every section of society. If we write about your failures, it would be as long as the Ramayana; if we listen, it would be as vast as the Mahabharata,' the minister told the BJP leader in his response on 'X'. The Congress leader listed out the promises made by the BJP in the elections which were never fulfilled. These include a monthly pension for small and marginal farmers above 60 years of age, increasing to Rs 6,000 annual Kisan Samman Nidhi for farmers' crop investment support, filling 10 lakh vacancies in the government, Rs 15 lakh to every household and two crore jobs annually. "What have you done for Telangana in 11 years? Not a single rupee has come to Telangana. What have you, or the 8 BJP MPs and two Union Ministers from this state, done?," he asked. Prabhakar asked the BJP leaders about their stance on Prime Minister Modi's statement in Parliament, allegedly criticising the formation of Telangana state. The minister came down heavily on the BJP for not fulfilling the commitments made in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. He advised the state BJP leaders to write letters to Prime Minister Modi to fulfil the promises made to Telangana. The Congress leader said that writing a letter to the Congress government formed one and a half years ago, and asking it to do everything in a short period reflects the "blind hatred" of BJP leaders.

HYDERABAD: Taking strong exception to BRS working president KTR's challenge, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Saturday asserted that any serious political discourse must take place in the Legislative Assembly. He said that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is open to holding a detailed discussion on any issue, including Banakacherla and state welfare schemes, provided Leader of the Opposition K Chandrasekhar Rao formally writes to the Speaker requesting the convening of a session. Speaking to the media at Praja Bhavan, Ponnam Prabhakar said that Rama Rao may not have full knowledge of the government's initiatives due to his recent foreign tour. He maintained that the Congress government is willing to engage in discussion on any subject, and even ready to extend Assembly sessions late into the night if needed, as long as the conversation occurs within constitutional frameworks. Prabhakar criticised the opposition's call for open debates at venues like Press Club, questioning the appropriateness of shifting legislative discussions to non-official settings. He clarified that while the Congress is willing to engage with the media or civil society in any forum when required, official matters involving governance must be deliberated in the legislature, which he described as the 'temple of democracy'. Later in the day, TPCC working president T Jayaprakash Reddy, also known as Jagga Reddy, launched a sharp attack on BRS leader Rama Rao, questioning his authority to challenge Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to a debate. Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy dismissed Rama Rao's challenge for a public debate with the chief minister as politically irrelevant and lacking seriousness. He pointed out that the BRS working president had a record of making theatrical promises that never materialised and alleged that his current approach was no different. The MP emphasised that the Telangana Assembly, not public venues like clubs or press gatherings, is the appropriate platform for political discussion. Choppadandi MLA Medipally Satyam alleged that Rama Rao's renewed political attacks were driven more by personal frustration. He said the BRS leader's recent remarks lacked substance and were designed more to stir controversy than to contribute meaningfully to public discourse.

KTR challenges CM Revanth to farmers' welfare debate, gives 72-hour preparation time
HYDERABAD: BRS working president KT Rama Rao has formally accepted Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's challenge to a public debate on what the governments of the pink party and the Congress did for the welfare of farmers in Telangana. Addressing a press conference at the BRS party office on Saturday, the former IT minister accepted the challenge, saying that he is ready for the debate 'anywhere, anytime' be it the Assembly, Ambedkar statue, Kondareddypalle, Chintamadaka or Kodangal, and asked Revanth to fix the date, time, and place for the same. 'If none of these suits you, I'll be at the Somajiguda Press Club at 11 am on July 8 ready to expose the truth before the media.' Rama Rao alleged that Revanth doesn't even have basic knowledge of agriculture. 'I am generously giving him 72 hours to prepare for the debate. Otherwise, he'll show up and may talk about 'basins' and 'okra', making a mockery of himself and the office he holds.' 'Even a bull can explain how agriculture thrived under the leadership of former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao,' he remarked. Accusing Revanth of acting as a secret ally of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the BRS working president said that Telangana's water resources were being diverted to the neighbouring state under the guise of projects like Banakacherla. 'Revanth is looting Telangana's water and funds, all to please his political mentor,' Rama Rao alleged. During KCR's government, pioneering welfare initiatives like Rythu Bandhu were implemented with over `73,000 crore deposited directly into the accounts of farmers besides supplying free 24/7 electricity to the agriculture sector, reviving over 46,000 tanks under Mission Kakatiya and helping Telangana become India's highest paddy producer. He said, 'Not a single woman is receiving the `2,500 monthly pension promised by the Congress. Distribution of scooters to college-going girl students, creation of jobs, unemployment allowance, proved false promises.' 'The Congress has also cheated farmers by reducing the loan waiver from `50,000 crore to `12,000 crore and the government owes every farmer `19,000 under Rythu Bharosa. They have not paid even the crop insurance premiums for three months,' he said.
