Mitchell and Webb return for new comedy sketch show but fans are divided
Veteran comedians David Mitchell and Robert Webb are set to make their sketch show later this year, though a preview has divided audiences. Fans remain uncertain about what to expect from the Channel 4 programme, following an airport-themed sketch that the broadcaster shared across social media platforms.
Whilst viewers were delighted to witness the return of the seasoned sketch show duo, known for Bruiser and That Mitchell and Webb Look, many were left hoping the material improves from here. Others were thoroughly entertained by the sketch, describing it as both hilariously funny and a remarkably accurate, albeit comedically exaggerated, portrayal of airport customs and security procedures.
A discussion on the r/BritishTV Reddit forum saw supporters expressing their enthusiasm, with many celebrating the revival of sketch comedy from the Peep Show stars.
One admirer of the piece commented: "It's nice to see sketch comedy returning!" Another contributed: "I enjoyed this sketch, there are some glum sods in this sub." A third remarked: "I don't know if this is funny or just depressingly accurate."
While some celebrated Mitchell and Webb's return to sketch comedy, others remained hopeful for more amusing material ahead.
One contributor observed: "Felt like Mitchell and Webb acting in a sketch written by Lee Mack and Catherine Tate."
Another expressed mixed reactions following the sketch, noting: "I'll be fair and say I did laugh at a couple of jokes in it, but it also felt very dated in terms of subject matter.
"Not saying every sketch has to be cutting edge, but it's weird to promote the show with a sketch that's basically the same as one that plenty of online sketch comedians have done before."
A third bluntly stated: "It was pretty unfunny and obvious."
The Peep Show duo confirmed their involvement in a fresh sketch programme, scheduled to air on Channel 4 later this year.
Their joint statement reads: "When Channel 4 asked us to do another sketch show we were startled, bemused and available.
"It's a perilous time for the industry and so it's our hope that relaunching the trickiest genre of comedy is a brilliant piece of counter intuitive commissioning.
"We're confident that unlike Roger Moore with his shoe on the bonnet of a car teetering on the edge of a cliff in For Your Eyes Only [REPLACE WITH 21ST CENTURY REFERENCE?] we're not about to give British TV comedy a final lethal nudge into the abyss."
This represents the pair's first comedic venture since Back, the Channel 4 dark comedy series which spanned two seasons.

Celebrity SAS chaos as two stars walk out during first episode
Celebrity SAS chaos as two stars walk out during first episode Two celebrities were seen exiting the Channel 4 series Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, despite the show only just beginning Hannah Spearritt quit Celebrity SAS (Image: Channel 4) Celeb SAS: Who Dares Wins was plunged into turmoil on Sunday (3 August) as a pair of celebrities withdrew during the opening episode. The Channel 4 military challenge programme made its return on Sunday night, though proceedings didn't unfold as anticipated. Fourteen famous participants, featuring Love Island personalities Chloe Burrows and Tasha Ghouri, alongside X Factor veteran Lucy Spraggan and footballer Adebayo Akinfenwa among others, faced gruelling tests under the watchful eyes of Mark 'Billy' Billingham, Jason 'Foxy' Fox, Rudy Reyes, and Chris Oliver. An early challenge transported the recruits to a derelict facility for what was branded the 'most perilous' hostage extraction exercise they would encounter. Former S Club 7 member Hannah Spearritt, 44, who later pursued acting with appearances in programmes including Primeval and EastEnders, was visibly finding the experience overwhelming, reports the Mirror. Moments afterwards, it emerged that the Reach vocalist had become the inaugural departure from the programme, with fellow contestants suggesting she may have experienced a panic episode. Two stars walked off Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins during the first episode on Sunday night (Image: PA) Nevertheless, in a pre-recorded interview shown shortly before, Hannah revealed: "I am pretty determined. I wouldn't say I give up easily but whether I get to the end or not...I don't think I'll go on the first day because I just wouldn't forgive myself." She subsequently informed the directing staff: "Sorry - I'm done. Sorry. I've reached a point." She wasn't alone in struggling early on, as dancer Louie Spence also made a dramatic exit when the demanding scenes became too much. Speaking beforehand, Louie had said: "If there was a world war and they decided they were gonna call everyone up, would I be the first to jump up and say 'Yes me?' Being surrounded my thousands of soldiers, I might just jump at it. I'd be the home guard like on Dad's Army. We'll have a gay Dad's Army. Honestly, they wouldn't wanna mess with the gays!" Yet despite his bravado, moments afterwards Chris Fox branded the group's performance as "abysmal" following their most recent challenge. He urged the recruits to remember their purpose for being there and advised them to approach things "seriously". Louie interjected: "I wanna do an immediate withdrawal. I just don't have the conviction and I feel as though I'm not dedicated enough," he declared whilst removing his armband. Chris offered him the opportunity to replace his armband, but Louie declined, prompting Chris to respond: "Get your kit." Louie Spence also walked off the programme in the first episode (Image: Channel 4) In a pre-recorded interview, the 56 year old Louie had stated: "I'm a survivor, I would keep battling to survive. I think the worst way for me to leave the course would be to choose to leave. That would really p*** me off," yet moments later, it was confirmed he had indeed departed the programme. Before his abrupt departure, Louie was full of admiration for the programme's directing staff, stating: "I actually looked at them and thought, 'oh, my God', because what they do and what they've done is incredible. I could never do that for real. "Do you know what I mean? They are a different breed, like doctors and surgeons and things like that. So I did look at them in that sense and think that what they really did in their day job was incredible." When questioned about what he found most challenging, he confessed: "Definitely the physical side of the course. Article continues below "Even though I've struggled with my anxiety and depression, mentally I was in a really strong, good place. It wasn't about an individual which they made very clear at the beginning, it was about the group. I love being a group player, I love being with people. But in that scenario, in the reality of it when I was there, I didn't think I was capable of being a group player." Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins continues on Channel 4 at 9pm

Ultimate guide to Reading and Leeds festivals – from camping to never missing a set
Mosh tips Ultimate guide to Reading and Leeds festivals – from camping to never missing a set Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) COME rain or shine, nothing beats a British music festival – and in August, Reading and Leeds are the places to be. The twin festivals, held over the same weekend, are back for 2025 with an epic lineup. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 7 Get sun-set for gigs – from tech and blister plasters to the all-important bumbag From August 21 to 24, the two sites will welcome Chappell Roan, for her exclusive UK headline festival appearance, and a huge list of big names including Travis Scott, Bring Me the Horizon and Hozier. Whether you're a festival veteran or newbie, planning and preparation are key when it comes to making the most of your weekend. From securing a good camping spot to keeping your phone charged, these are the tricks and tips you need to know. 7 Forget leaky pop-ups – grab a decent tent for a comfier festival experience Leader of the pack Camping is a big part of the Reading and Leeds experience so investing in a decent tent makes a big difference. As tempting as pop-up tents are, they tend to be flimsy, leaky and a nightmare to get back into their bag. Go for something more solid and always choose a tent size that's a little bigger than you think you need – if there are two of you, a three-person tent will be more comfortable. Complete the kit with an inflatable mat, sleeping bag and pillowcase you can stuff with a few jumpers. Showering options are few and far between, so bring biodegradable wipes and dry shampoo to help you feel a little fresher. Barbecues aren't allowed at Reading and Leeds but you can take flat-based cooking stoves into the camping area for your morning brew or some beans on toast. And there are plenty of food stalls from burgers to burritos. 7 Setting up a camping spot near paths means an easy stroll to stages and stalls Pitch perfect Arrive early on Thursday to get a good spot and try to camp near enough to a path for easy access, but not so close that fellow festival-goers stumble over your tent. Finding your bed in a sea of tents can be tricky so hang a unique flag, fairy lights or ribbon on yours to find it easily. At Reading and Leeds there are also some specialist camping areas you might want to consider. The Garden, where no noise is allowed after 1am, is great if you know you'll need your shuteye. The Valley is aimed at those travelling solo or in pairs and looking to make friends. At The Meadow, there's an eco theme and lots of opportunities to meet like-minded people via talks, workshops and yoga classes. 7 Size matters At both festivals, only bags A4 sized or smaller are allowed in the arena, so bring a roomy bumbag for festival must-haves. Don't forget a reusable water bottle – this can be filled up at stations across the arena and campsites throughout Reading and Leeds. To avoid being caught out when the heavens open, attach a packable rain jacket or poncho to the bumbag. A vape-free alternative with Nordic Spirit WITH the disposable vape ban now in force, Nordic Spirit nicotine pouches could offer a vape-free alternative at Reading and Leeds festivals this summer. These smoke-free pouches, which are placed between the gum and upper or lower lip, can provide a discreet alternative to smoking or vaping and are 100% tobacco-free. Each can of Nordic Spirit contains 20 individual pouches and has a useful compartment where used pouches can be stored before disposal in a bin. Available in a range of nicotine strengths, the new Nordic Spirit range features a higher moisture content and offers a refreshing flavour release that lasts up to 30 minutes. Plus, this summer sees the launch of three new fruit flavours: Melon Fresh, Tropical Mix and Forest Berries. For more information, visit or claim your free sample here. Only available to ages 18+, and for existing adult nicotine users only. 18+ only. This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive substance. 7 Switching to airplane mode is brilliant for making your mobile battery last longer Check your tech Throughout the arenas and campsites, portable chargers will be provided by 3Charging, but it's advisable to bring a trusty power bank. Putting your phone on airplane mode when you don't need it is also a great way to extend battery life. Come night-time, a head torch is a game-changer for trips to the loo or sorting things out in the tent hands free. Mind the app The official Reading and Leeds app has all the lineup information you need plus a geo-targeted map that tracks where you are – a godsend for finding friends and stages. In case you lose signal, it's always a wise move to screenshot important details like band times and key meeting points. The app can also direct you to the Sensory Calm Space, a place to be if you ever feel overwhelmed or overstimulated by the festivities. 7 Festival fashion means mixing glamour with hard-working basics – like a pair of wellies Style it out It's hard to strike the right balance between fun and practicality. So get the sensible basics right and add festival flair with accessories such as biodegradable glitter, bucket hat or flower crown. Hitting 20,000 steps a day is on the cards with all the walking and dancing, so think about footwear carefully. Trainers are the best bet – unless it's really wet, when those wellies definitely come in handy. Even if the daytime is balmy, the nights are chilly so ensure you have a few layers for hot-footing it back to your tent for bed. 7 For more information, visit or claim your free sample here.
