Accord mother tongue prominence, but embrace languages sans borders
It's indeed a sensitive issue in a state where people still honour the '106 martyrs' who died in the late 1950s agitating for a separate Marathi speakers' province. Yet ironically, like dominant tongues in several other states, Marathi too flexes muscle for what scholar Prachi Deshpande calls the 'bear hug' of language. Konkani speakers on the state's southern borders have resisted Marathi's sway for decades, while Dangi speakers on its northern fringes are still contending with its peremptory ways. The abiding paradox is that though most Indian states were demarcated linguistically, language itself brooks no border. In a country with 22 constitutionally scheduled languages and hundreds of others thriving, we have to accept lingual influences across and within state lines. Despite the heat of politics, culture shrivels in the cold confines of hard borders.

Yellow Line delay: BJP slams Bengaluru Metro, Congress attacks Centre
Bengaluru: The long-delayed Yellow Line of Namma Metro, meant to link RV Road with Electronics City, has become the latest flashpoint between BJP and the ruling Congress over why the Rs 7,000-crore corridor remains idle despite being physically complete for over two years. With just three out of the required train sets delivered, and a fourth expected by late July, the line's opening has been repeatedly pushed — from 2021 to 2022, and now tentatively to Aug 2025. That too hinges on two pending clearances: the independent safety assessment (ISA) for the line's signalling system, and a statutory inspection by the commissioner of metro rail safety (CMRS), likely only after July 15. Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya, along with other senior party functionaries, including R Ashoka, are slated to meet BMRCL MD Maheshwar Rao at 9.30am demanding accountability. Surya said: "This line was supposed to open in 2021. Then in 2022. Then before the 2024 elections. Now they say July. No one knows when it will actually open. People are stuck in traffic while a fully built Metro line sits unused. BMRCL is taking Bengalureans for granted." But Congress has pushed back sharply — turning the spotlight on the BJP-led Centre, which jointly funds BMRCL and oversees key safety and administrative clearances. State transport minister Ramalinga Reddy said: "BJP ruled Karnataka for four years and at the Centre for 11. Why haven't they ensured coach supply or fast-tracked CMRS inspections? They should hold their own govt accountable." A Congress delegation is also scheduled to meet the BMRCL MD at 9am Saturday, demanding that the Centre expedite the remaining approvals and train supply to prevent further delays. The 19-km elevated Yellow Line, which passes through one of Bengaluru's most congested corridors, is expected to ease traffic for lakhs of commuters. 1-hour disruption on Purple Line Metro services on the Purple Line will be partially disrupted Sunday, due to scheduled maintenance work between Indiranagar and Baiyappanahalli stations. As per BMRCL, operations between Swami Vivekananda Metro Station and Baiyappanahalli will be halted for one hour from 7am to 8am. All other stretches of the Purple Line, including Challaghatta to Indiranagar and Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield (Kadugodi), will function as usual.

CM: Won't tolerate hooliganism in the name of Marathi
Mumbai: Hooliganism under the guise of Marathi pride will not be tolerated in the state, CM Fadnavis warned on Friday. He said police had registered an FIR and taken action in the Mira Road incident where a businessman was beaten up by MNS workers for not knowing Marathi. Speaking to the media, Fadnavis said beating up someone over language was wrong. "We are Marathi and are proud of the language. Insisting that a person speak in Marathi is not wrong, but beating up a businessman because he does not know it is wrong. Our Marathi-speaking people are doing business in different states, and if they do not know the local language, should they get similar treatment? Such behaviour and hooliganism are not correct. Action will be taken against such violent behaviour," he said. CM Devendra Fadnavis said on Friday, "We are proud of Marathi, but no injustice can be done to any other Indian language. Sometimes I am amazed they embrace English but create disputes over Hindi. What kind of thinking is this, and what kind of action is this?" "Should businessmen not do business? If a Marathi-speaking businessman goes to Assam and does business there and takes time to learn Assamese, should he be meted out similar treatment? Should the people of Assam beat him up? On the Thackeray cousins holding a "victory rally" over state govt's withdrawal of two GRs about Hindi being taught as a third language from Class 1, Fadnavis said they (Thackerays) seem to be happy about the decision taken by govt. "Let them hold the victory rally. The committee to make recommendations was set up by them, they put their aide on the committee, the committee recommended that Hindi and English should be made compulsory from Class 1 to 12, the recommendations were accepted by them in the cabinet, the minutes were signed by them. .. the Marathi manoos knows they are double-faced," he said. This was a reiteration of his earlier statement that Uddhav Thackery as CM had accepted the report of the Mashelkar panel recommending that Hindi be the third language from Class 1.

‘Naxalism confined to just five, six districts', says Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday (July 4, 2025) declared that Maoism is now confined to just five to six districts in the country and even in such places, it will not continue for a long time. The Maoist hubs have been transformed into educational hubs. The area known as Red Corridor is now rapidly changing into a growth corridor, he said, speaking at the 128th birth anniversary celebrations of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju organised by Kshatriya Seva Samiti (TG & AP) and Union Ministry of Culture. Mr. Singh said the government has taken a decision that by March 31 next year, the entire country would be maoist-free. Referring to Operation Sindoor, he emphasised that only terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan was targeted, avoiding civil or military establishments, and adhering to ethical principles. He lauded Sitarama Raju, the legendary freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh, as an embodiment of courage, duty and 'karma'. Similarily, the country's brave soldiers demonstrated courage, duty and 'karma' in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, he said. Quoting from Ramayan, he said, during 'Lanka Dahan', Lord Hanuman hit only those who hit him. Similarly, the country demonstrated courage during Operation Sindoor and targeted only terror structures in Pakistan and not civilian or military establishments, he said. "I would also like to say, if any such mischief (Pahalgam terror attack) takes place in future, we will give befitting to reply to terrorism with the same strength," he said. The life of Sitarama Raju, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, is also an example of social unity, he said. Mr. Singh said new technology, infrastructure development and digital revolution are very much needed for development in the context of a 'New India', but it is the "cultural soul" which can keep the country united. He affirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is working to realise the vision of Sitarama Raju on tribal development through various central initiatives. The tenet of 'Viksit Bharat', he explained, involves taking pride in its cultural heritage, while upholding constitutional values and being inspired by the dreams of the youth. Mr. Singh also urged everyone to take the life of Sitarama Raju to every school and home. Speaking on the occasion, Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said Sitarama Raju, in the short span of his life (less than 30 years), stood as an inspiration and his memory makes the countrymen feel proud. Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy, Karnataka Minister Bose Raju, former Union Minister P Ashok Gajapati Raju and other leaders were present on the occasion.
