Conor McGregor loses appeal against civil jury's finding he sexually assaulted woman
LONDON -- Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor on Thursday lost his legal appeal against a civil court's finding that he sexually assaulted a woman at a Dublin hotel. In November a jury at the High Court in Dublin found McGregor liable for assaulting Nikita Hand, who says he 'brutally raped and battered' her in a hotel penthouse in 2018. He was ordered to pay Hand almost 250,000 euros ($285,000), as well as about 1.3 million euros ($1.5 million) in legal costs. Hand, 35, successfully sued McGregor in civil court after prosecutors declined to bring charges, saying there was insufficient evidence and a conviction was unlikely. The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. McGregor alleged that Hand fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. He launched an appeal, but at a hearing earlier this month his lawyer unexpectedly withdrew a request to introduce new evidence. Three appeals court judges in Dublin on Thursday dismissed the appeal 'in its entirety.' Hand was in court for the ruling, but McGregor was not. The 37-year-old fighter, once the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but now past his prime in the ring, has become known for anti-immigration statements and criticism of Irish politicians. He has flirted with the idea of running for president of Ireland. U.S. President Donald Trump, a UFC fan, invited McGregor to the White House to mark St. Patrick's Day in March. McGregor also faces a lawsuit in Florida for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in the bathroom of the Kaseya Center, home arena of the Miami Heat, during a 2023 NBA finals game with the Denver Nuggets.

Dricus Du Plessis: 'Special' Ilia Topuria going to be a Hall of Famer no doubt
Dricus Du Plessis started his UFC journey with fellow champion Ilia Topuria at the same time. Both middleweight champion Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) and lightweight champion Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) debuted on the same UFC Fight Night 179 card in October 2020. It would mark the start of an incredible rise, where both fighters are unbeaten in the octagon and currently holding UFC titles. Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) however, has assembled an undeniable resume consisting of three-straight knockouts of Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and, most recently, Charles Oliveira to claim the vacant 155-pound belt at UFC 317. He is also the first undefeated fighter to claim belts in two different divisions in the UFC. "I'm so happy for him," Du Plessis said of Topuria in an interview with Betway South Africa. "We made our debuts on the same fight card. He was literally in my changing room. We were on the same trajectory, winning our titles one month apart, so I'm super happy for him. "I think he's one of those special characters who's going to be a Hall of Famer, no doubt. He's the first unbeaten guy to have two titles, so I rate him very highly as an all-round fighter. And obviously, his striking power, knocking out three legends – I think he's incredible, and in my opinion, one of the best, if not the best in the UFC right now." Du Plessis will look to notch his third middleweight title defense when he takes on Khamzat Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 main event on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).
