I-Berhad commits RM10mil for i-City smart city push

SHAH ALAM: I-Berhad has allocated RM10 million for the rollout of intelligent infrastructure pilot projects across i-City, reinforcing its commitment to smart city development as part of its broader transition into a technology-driven urban platform.
The latest initiative underscores the company's focus on embedding artificial intelligence and robotics into the core of i-City's ecosystem, transforming it into a truly tech-enabled intelligent city.
In a statement, I-Berhad said these technologies will be integrated into building management systems, tenant services, and community engagement platforms, aimed at boosting automation, operational efficiency, and personalised urban experiences.
"Our growth journey has always been grounded in bold vision and forward planning," said chairman Tan Sri Lim Kim Hong.
"i-City was built two decades ago as Malaysia's first digital city with fibre-to-home broadband and smart infrastructure. Today, we are ready to write the next chapter by elevating i-City into an intelligent, adaptive urban ecosystem."
With a strong recurring income base, sustained earnings growth, and an expanding digital infrastructure, I-Berhad is positioning i-City as a tech-centric urban hub that appeals to businesses, residents, and digital tourists, while enhancing overall property values within the development.
The group delivered a robust financial performance in 2024, with revenue climbing 27 per cent year on year. Profit attributable to shareholders rose 143 per cent to RM29.2 million, up from RM12 million in 2023, a testament to the group's solid fundamentals and evolving business model.
This growth trajectory continued into the first quarter of 2025 (Q1 2025), with revenue surging 53 per cent and net profit attributable to shareholders jumping 144 per cent year-on-year.
All three of I-Berhad's core segments, property development, property investment, and leisure and hospitality, contributed meaningfully to earnings, reinforcing the strength of its diversified operations.
According to Lim, these results reflect I-Berhad's successful pivot from a conventional property developer to a future-ready platform focused on long-term value creation through asset optimisation, digital transformation, and stable recurring income.
The group's digital initiatives are designed to be self-sustaining, with monetisation driven by SuperApp service revenues, enhanced leasing from value-added property solutions, and cost savings through predictive maintenance and automation, he said.
Lim said that by placing technology at the core of its business model, I-Berhad is strategically positioned at the intersection of real estate, digital innovation, and recurring income, unlocking scalable growth and new value creation opportunities.
"With a technology-forward model and recurring income focus, I-Bhd is well-positioned to create long-term shareholder value," said Lim.

Measuring nation's wealth

Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 Text Size: THE wealth of a country is derived from its natural resources such as land, minerals and raw materials, while its economy is driven by production, trade and economic activities. However, a nations wealth does not necessarily translate into a strong economy. This transformation depends largely on governance, leadership and policy decisions. Russia, the world's largest country by land area, possess vast natural resources, including oil, gas and minerals, which could theoretically sustain long-term prosperity. Similarly, some countries are considered homogeneous – meaning they can sustain themselves with minimal reliance on imports or exports. These include the United States of America, Russia, China, India, Australia, Japan and several African nations. Yet despite their wealth, economic success is not guaranteed without effective management. In contrast, Malaysia's wealth is more limited. Its known natural resources include tin, oil and some mining activities. Plantation sectors (oil palm and rubber) contribute about 30% of cash flow, while the rest is affected by foreign worker remittances and export dependencies. A significant portion of Malaysia's domestic cash flow comes from government salaries and contracts, while other sectors face increasing competition from manufacturing giants like China and India. Malaysia has a population of over 35 million, with over 50% living in rural areas. The civil service is reportedly one of the largest in Asia, with monthly salary expenditures exceed RM10 billion - representing a key component of the nation's cash flow. However, a concerning percentage of civil servants are burdened with debt which can foster corruption. One study found that 10-13% of new bankruptcy cases in Malaysia involved civil servants, whilst another indicate that 50% of the bankruptcies were due to personal loans. Meanwhile, rural populations contribute minimally to the formal economy due to limited opportunities. Many countries including Malaysia, implement policies that inadvertently hinder the economic progress of rural and lower income groups. These measures often act as temporary appeasement, akin to giving candy to children to keep them quiet, rather then sustainable solutions. Additionally, developed nations exploit developing countries by purchasing agricultural and manufactured products at suppressed prices. This was highlighted by CNN's anchor and correspondent, Richard Quest, when he exposed that African cocoa farmers received only 12% of the final product's value, with cocoa beans selling at $1,500/ton compared to processed products fetching $25,000/ton Harris Mohd Salleh The views expressed here are the views of the writer and do not necessarily reflect those of the Daily Express. Stepping up Sabah's chicken output

Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 By: Garry Lewis Text Size: Jeffrey (second, left) in a group photo at the event. TAMBUNAN: Broiler chicken farming has been elevated as a key pillar of Sabah's Agricultural Revolution, in line with efforts to ensure food security and boost rural incomes. Deputy Chief Minister cum State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said this initiative represents one of the State Government's primary strategies to make Sabah Malaysia's largest broiler producer. 'The government, through my ministry, is currently implementing the Agricultural Revolution initiative to strengthen the rural economy. One of our main focuses is increasing broiler production,' Jeffrey said after launching the Broiler Farming Course attended by some 200 participants from rural areas. The programme was organised by a private farming company in collaboration with the Sabah Veterinary Services Department here. Jeffrey said the course, conducted with cooperation from the Department of Veterinary Services and private sector partners, aims to provide systematic training to participants to make chicken production more organised and productive, including technical assistance for coop preparation and chick supply. He encouraged youths and agricultural entrepreneurs to participate in this sector to ensure broiler farming can be developed intensively on a commercial scale. 'With continued support from relevant agencies, I am confident that broiler farming can become the main driver of Sabah's food security and contribute to the state's rural economic development,' he said. At the same ceremony, Jeffrey presented RM10,000 in financial assistance to the Tambunan District School Sports Council, which will host the State-level School Sports Council Championship on June 29. The State Government remains committed to strengthening the agricultural sector through various assistance programmes and training initiatives, aiming for Sabah to achieve its target of becoming the nation's primary broiler production hub in the future. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
