Science-based approach guiding Sarawak towards low-carbon status, says Awg Tengah
KUCHING (June 25): Sarawak is moving towards becoming a low-carbon state through a science-based, innovative and inclusive approach, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
The Second State Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development said other efforts include the enactment of the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance 2023, implementation of the state's climate change policy, and investments in renewable energy such as hydroelectric, solar and biomass.
'All these initiatives are aligned with Sarawak's aspiration to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and become a regional leader in the green economy,' he said in a speech for the closing ceremony of a workshop for Environmental Lovers Club (PALS) teacher advisors, here today.
The text of his speech was read by State Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
The event was attended by representatives from 100 schools across the state.
Awang Tengah added that at the school level, PALS serves as a key platform in educating students on environmental sustainability.
In this regard, he welcomed all efforts spearheaded by the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and other strategic partners in strengthening environmental education, including major initiatives such as the establishment of PALS in all schools across the state.
'As proof of the Sarawak government's commitment to sustainability education, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg approved a special grant of RM13.7 million last year to support the establishment of PALS clubs in all schools by 2030 or earlier, in line with the aspiration to make Sarawak a green, healthy and sustainable state,' he said.
The grant, he added, reflects the government's seriousness in involving the younger generation directly in conservation and preservation efforts.
On the workshop, Awang Tengah said it was a timely effort toward strengthening educators' capacity to effectively deliver sustainability messages and to inspire students to actively participate in conservation.

Peka demands answers from mayor on new Bukit Gasing bungalows
Peka president Rajesh Nagarajan said the Petaling Jaya mayor has not provided any document to prove a controversial bungalow project in Bukit Gasing meets MBPJ's criteria. PETALING JAYA : Environmental group Peka has demanded Petaling Jaya mayor Zahri Samingon prove that the construction of several bungalows at Bukit Gasing here meets the city council's conditions. In a statement, Peka president Rajesh Nagarajan said Zahri's assertion that the project complies with Petaling Jaya City Council's (MBPJ) criteria is unsubstantiated, as no supporting documents or reports were provided. 'There is no transparency at all from the authorities even though this is a matter that affects the lives of the residents of Bukit Gasing,' said Rajesh. 'If the project is truly compliant with the rules, we demand that MBPJ show us the approvals. Failing this, the only logical conclusion is that the approvals were not in order.' Peka recently called for a halt to the development of several bungalows at Bukit Gasing as they are being constructed on steep slopes. The group threatened to take legal action against MBPJ if it did not halt the development, which it claimed involved the extensive felling of trees on steep slopes. Peka claimed several landslides had already been reported in the area and that continued clearing could endanger lives. In response, Zahri today said the bungalows were being developed on private land and the project meets MBPJ's conditions, adding that it did not encroach on Bukit Gasing's forest reserve area. In a report in The Star, Zahri said the construction is located on land that can be developed, going on to note that there is a clear delineation of the border with the forest reserve. Rajesh today said Zahri's remarks on the delineation were irrelevant as Peka never said the development was encroaching into the forest reserve. 'Our concern is with bungalow development on steep slopes, which poses landslide risks to the area,' he said. 'The mayor is steadfastly avoiding addressing the issue at hand and is instead deflecting our concerns by responding to a point that was never raised and is not a point of contention.'

Awang Tengah: Sarawak shifts focus to value-added exports and green energy leadership

KUCHING (July 2): The Sarawak government is actively pursuing value-added growth and is no longer focusing solely on raw commodity exports, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. The International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister said the state is now laying the foundation for advanced manufacturing, green economy initiatives and digital-based exports as part of a long-term strategy to build a more resilient and innovation-driven economy. 'We are investing in the future, which is in renewable energy, semiconductors and high-value sectors that will position Sarawak as a major economic force in the region. 'Our focus has thus shifted because we want to go beyond exporting crude oil, gas and palm oil,' he said during his keynote address at the launching ceremony of Sarawak Export Day 2025 held at a local hotel here today. He added that Sarawak is poised to lead the country in green energy development, with active initiatives in hydropower, solar, biomass and hydrogen production. To support this ambition, Awang Tengah said the state has amended its Electricity Ordinance to allow greater investor participation in boosting generation capacity. 'We have set a clear target in which by 2030, we aim to generate at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity, and by 2035, 15,000 megawatts which will all be from clean and renewable sources,' he said. Awang Tengah also mentioned that Sarawak will be developed into a hub for semiconductor manufacturing and aerospace economic activities, reflecting the state's shift towards high-technology industries and global competitiveness. These sectors, he said, offer enormous potential, and Sarawak wants its local players to seize the opportunities and grow alongside global industry leaders. Commenting on investments, he said the state government's message is clear: investment is the cornerstone of Sarawak's future, not only to boost exports and gross domestic product but also to transform the economic landscape, drive technological advancement, and ensure inclusive prosperity for Sarawakians. 'Since 2021, Sarawak has approved over RM102 billion in investments involving 1,180 projects. These projects are expected to create nearly 23,000 job opportunities and open doors for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to participate in supporting industries,' he said. To further boost global engagement, Awang Tengah said Sarawak is expanding its international trade network, adding that in addition to existing offices in Singapore and Brunei, a new trade office will soon open in Pontianak, Indonesia. EPA employees accuse Trump administration of ‘ignoring' science

(AP pic) WASHINGTON : US President Donald Trump's administration is 'ignoring the scientific consensus to benefit polluters', hundreds of Environmental Protection Agency employees said in a letter of dissent Monday, accusing the government of undermining the EPA's core mission. The scathing letter, signed by more than 200 current and former officials and their supporters, accused EPA chief Lee Zeldin of enacting policies dangerous to both humans and the environment. 'The decisions of the current administration frequently contradict the peer-reviewed research and recommendations of agency experts,' said the letter. 'Make no mistake: your actions endanger public health and erode scientific progress – not only in America – but around the world.' Under Zeldin, the EPA has worked to deliver Trump's campaign promises of lifting environmental regulations, boosting fossil fuel production and cutting clean energy spending. The letter identifies five main areas of concern, including the increasing politicisation of the agency, the reversing of programmes aimed at marginalised communities and the 'dismantling' of the agency's Office of Research and Development. It described the agency's communications under Zeldin as being used 'to promote misinformation and overtly partisan rhetoric'. 'This politicised messaging distracts from EPA's core responsibility: to protect human health and the environment through objective, science-based policy.' As an example, the letter cited official communications that likened 'climate science to a religion'. Zeldin has repeatedly stated that he sees the EPA's role as supporting US economic growth, and under his guidance the agency has set in motion a full-scale reversal of several environmental standards and greenhouse gas regulations. Unveiling a set of policy initiatives in March, Zeldin hailed the move as 'the greatest day of deregulation our nation has seen.' 'We are driving a dagger straight into the heart of the climate change religion to drive down the cost of living for American families, unleash American energy, bring auto jobs back to the US and more,' said the administrator of the federal agency charged with protecting the environment. The letter came weeks after the publication of a similar text signed by dozens of employees of the National Institutes of Health over the Trump administration's 'harmful' policies. The EPA letter had more than 170 'anonymous signers', with the text stating the administration had promoted 'a culture of fear' at the agency.
