TVB's beloved 'grandpa' Chow Chung passes away at 92 from pneumonia
Hong Kong actor Chow Chung passed away today (July 4) at the age of 92, following a battle with pneumonia.
A cherished figure in the Hong Kong entertainment industry, Chow contributed extensively to both film and television – not just as an actor, but also as a key member of the South China Film Industry Workers Union, where he served as chairman for three consecutive years.
He made his film debut in 1955 with the historical drama Broken Zither Bower , directed by Yeung Kung Leung, and went on to star in more than 85 films.
After many supporting roles, he eventually took on leading parts in movies such as Lady Bond (1966) and its sequel Return Of Lady Bond the same year.
As the Cantonese film industry declined in the 1980s, Chow stepped away from the screen and took on work as a movie theatre manager and in duty-free retail, according to Sin Chew .
However, in 1998, he made a full-time return to acting by joining TVB, where he appeared in numerous hit dramas including At The Threshold Of An Era , Moonlight Resonance , In The Eye Of The Beholder , Yes, Sir. Sorry, Sir! and Heart Of Greed .
In 2016, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at TVB's Anniversary Gala.
Sin Chew highlighted a 2021 article where Chow spoke candidly about death: 'I've acted for 60 years and died many times on screen. Death is most fair – it comes for everyone, rich or poor… Just because you don't talk about it doesn't mean it won't come.'
He had expressed his hope to pass peacefully, ideally after enjoying his favourite meal. His final wish was for his ashes to be scattered in a garden, so he could nourish the earth and leave behind a legacy of love.

However, in 1997, she returned to Hong Kong to resume her acting career. According to reports, Suet Nay's health had been deteriorating for years. She struggled with genetic hearing loss, often calling her husband her 'personal hearing aid.' She also endured long-term treatment for pancreatic cancer. These hardships reportedly took a toll on Tong Gai and at one point, he confided to their son that he wished to 'leave with her.' Although Tong Gai's death was alleged as a suicide, no note was found. Their marriage was cherished in Hong Kong and often regarded as one of show business's most loving unions. Suet Nay had called him her bodyguard, manager, and assistant. She admitted to being bold and sometimes argumentative, but Tong Gai always gave in with quiet patience. Now, perhaps, they can rest peacefully together—free from illness, pain, and parting. Their story remains a rare portrait of enduring love in the entertainment world. The festival, set for July 12, combines the annual Penang2030 celebration with Seberang Perai Heritage Day. The event aims to preserve cultural heritage, promote family participation and build stronger community ties in rural areas. It is a collaboration between the Chief Minister's Office (Penang2030 Unit), Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), Penang Island City Council (MBPP), Tech Dome Penang and Penang Green Council (PGC). 'This joint effort is aligned with the state's Penang2030 Vision – to build a 'Smart and Green State Inspired by a Family-Focused Approach',' said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at a press conference at Komtar. He said this year marked the seventh anniversary of the Penang2030 Vision. Activities lined up for the festival on Penang mainland include a mix of cultural showcases and modern tech experiences. According to a Sin Chew report citing Taiwanese media, members of Hsu's family now have to get Ma's permission before they can visit the children.
