The inherent nature of online transactions, particularly the absence of a physical card, introduces higher fraud risks compared to traditional card-present scenarios. This structural difference makes Card-Not-Present (CNP) fraud a dominant concern, accounting for a substantial portion of all card fraud, exemplified by its 85.3% share in the UK. The very factors driving digital adoption thus amplify the necessity for robust security measures, initiating a continuous and dynamic contest between technological innovation and efforts to prevent fraud.
The Significant Financial and Reputational Impact of Online Payment Fraud, Particularly from Stolen Payment Cards
Online payment fraud poses a severe and multifaceted threat, resulting in substantial financial losses for both businesses and consumers globally. Projections indicate that global card fraud losses are anticipated to reach $40.53 billion by 2027, with e-commerce businesses alone facing an estimated $48 billion in losses to online payment fraud in 2023. Real-world examples include Mercado Libre using USDC to pay suppliers in Brazil and Mexico, which streamlined payments and reduced costs compared to traditional bank transfers. SpaceX also leverages stablecoins to repatriate funds from Starlink sales in countries with highly volatile local currencies, such as Argentina and Nigeria, demonstrating their utility for wealth preservation
Cross-border payments and remittances through traditional fiat systems are often characterized by high fees (6-10% for remittances), slow settlement times (1-3 days), and limited accessibility, especially in developing economies with underdeveloped banking infrastructure. Stablecoins drastically cut remittance costs (to less than 1%), enable instant transfers, and provide USD-pegged stability in volatile markets. They offer a digital alternative for the unbanked, allowing for USD-denominated accounts globally. For example, the EU's Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation (MiCA) specifically mandates that issuers of e-money tokens and asset-referenced tokens maintain reserves to fully back stablecoins, manage them properly, and ensure redeemability at face value. This suggests that "blockchain transparency" is a necessary but insufficient condition for overall stablecoin transparency; robust regulatory oversight and consistent, independent auditing of reserves are equally, if not more, critical for building widespread user confidence and mitigating systemic risks.

The bank highlighted the ballooning government bond market as a major source of financial vulnerability, as owners of these assets are increasingly hedge funds that take on debt to buy bonds to benefit from small changes in prices. The BIS said: 'The post financial crisis landscape has government bond markets at its centre and asset managers of various stripes as the key intermediaries. As a result, a key risk today is liquidity stresses in government bond markets.' Bond markets were at the centre of a financial storm caused by President Trump's 'liberation day' tariffs on April 2. A sharp rise in US treasury yields and a decline in the dollar forced Trump into a partial retreat by announcing a 90-day pause on proposed tariffs for most countries. April's bond sell-off was exacerbated by the actions of hedge funds that were dumping their holdings of US bonds. The International Monetary Fund has also warned the UK's gilt market is more vulnerable to shocks due to the presence of hedge funds, that make speculative bets on bonds, rather than more 'patient' long-term investors like pension funds. The future of US tariffs is under question as the White House approaches its July 9 deadline, after which 'reciprocal' levies are due to come into force for more than 100 countries. If tariffs go ahead as planned, it would 'represent a further step towards greater trade fragmentation. These tariffs could accentuate the decline in productivity growth as supply chains come under further pressure. Ageing populations and less migration will reduce supply capacity', the BIS said. There are a few things that mark this nuclear fusion reactor out as unusual. For one, it is rather small: it could fit on a table top. For another, this research model currently has a little more gaffer tape than you might expect of the energy technology of the future. But the biggest difference between it and its competitors is that this nuclear fusion reactor, in a warehouse north of Bristol, is actually working. And it is on the cusp of doing something more unusual still: making money. For those who think they may have missed the development of a panacea for the world's energy problems, though, this isn't that — yet. Rather than being a solution for clean electricity the plan is simply to cure cancer by alleviating a desperate shortage of medical radioisotopes. 'We have got thousands of drugs going through medical trials that use nuclear medicine, and at the same time you have got the supply dwindling,' said Dr Tom Wallace-Smith from Astral Systems. Radioisotopes are chemicals that can be used to diagnose or treat cancers. Some, such as iodine-131, are crucial in treatment. But many of the most important ones are made by bombarding other chemicals with neutrons. Currently, doing so relies on ageing nuclear reactors, some of which regularly break down, and none of which are in the UK. Doctors are increasingly concerned about shortages. 'There's this real mismatch, which is constraining the industry,' said Wallace-Smith. This is where he thinks they can help, using nuclear fusion as a new way to provide the necessary neutrons. Nuclear fusion harnesses the processes found in the sun to join together two hydrogen atoms to become one helium and a neutron. The neutrons can then in theory be used to generate electricity. For clean power advocates, if we could get it to work it would be a solution to climate change, providing unlimited carbon-free energy. But to achieve it requires controlling conditions similar to the sun, while also getting more energy out than you put in. Companies and governments around the world have been working for decades to make a practical reactor. At Astral Systems, the company co-founded by Wallace-Smith, who did his PhD at Bristol, they have just such a practical reactor. Or, in fact, several. But the difference is that they aren't looking to get more energy out than in. They are simply looking to make the neutrons, in a device that can sit on a table. 'We don't have enough neutron sources in the UK to make what we need for medicine,' said Simon Middleburgh from Bangor University, which has one of the devices on order. 'The long and the short of it is, this is a compact neutron source.' He said Astral was one of the 'most exciting British nuclear companies to emerge in 20 to 30 years.' As well as making the radioisotopes currently used in medicine, he said that having a small source that could be used in a hospital would open up new isotopes, that currently degrade too rapidly to be transported. 'It opens up a swathe of new isotopes that could be used to treat people and to diagnose people that we don't have available to us at the moment.' But how? Most fusion reactor designs work by containing a plasma in a magnetic field then heating it up to extremely high temperatures. Astral's is different. It uses high voltages to fuse hydrogen together in plasma around a cathode, which then as a consequence starts emitting small quantities of neutrons. 'It's like a neutron light bulb,' said Wallace-Smith. The physics of this has long been well understood. Wallace-Smith's metaphorical light bulb moment came when he helped show that hydrogen isotopes were also bumping into the walls of the device, and more reactions could then occur there, raising the efficiency several times over. 'This meant the plasma is less a light bulb than a spark plug,' he said. It also meant they could get more neutrons out. For now, they are well short of getting more energy out than they put in, although Wallace-Smith doesn't preclude getting there one day. Simply by making money, though, he has done something that very few have achieved, in the 60 years we have been seeking fusion. 'We have shown you can do fusion now, and there's real-world immediate applications,' he said. 'That's the surprise.'

The private equity firm at the centre of a string of bidding wars for British companies is leading the £1.7bn race to buy the owner of Argos's store-card operations. Sky News has learnt that KKR is the frontrunner to buy NewDay Group, which is owned by the buyout firms Cinven and CVC Capital Partners. KKR is not in exclusive talks, and other parties - said to include Pimco, the asset management giant, KKR, and a Bain Capital-led consortium - remain in contention to acquire NewDay. Some of the bidders, such as Pimco, have been interested in pursuing a deal to buy NewDay's consumer loan book rather than the company as a whole; others including KKR are understood to be interested in acquiring the whole business, but potentially with its existing shareholders remaining invested for a period of time. NewDay, which took ownership of Argos's store card business last year in a £720m deal with J Sainsbury, the supermarket giant, has been exploring a sale or stock market listing for months. Last November, Sky News reported that NewDay's owners were lining up investment bankers at Barclays to advise on a process. NewDay is one of Britain's biggest privately held providers of consumer credit services, with about four million customers. Last year, it reported £213m of underlying pre-tax profit, with new customer acquisitions up 36%. It also launched a technology and lending partnership with Lloyds Banking Group, and launched the pilot of a technology partnership with Debenhams Group in the final quarter of last year. KKR has become engaged in bidding wars in recent months for Assura, the GP surgeries landlord, and testing equipment provider Spectris - both of which are listed on the London stock market.
