Syrian govt says fighting in Sweida halted after tribal forces pull out
Synopsis Fighting in Syria's Sweida "halted" on Sunday, the government said, after the southern city was recaptured by Druze fighters and state forces redeployed to the region where more than 900 people have been killed in sectarian violence. More than 900 people have been killed in Sweida since last Sunday as sectarian clashes between the Druze and Bedouin drew in the Islamist-led government, Israel and armed tribes from other parts of Syria. Fighting in Syria's Sweida "halted" on Sunday, the government said, after the southern city was recaptured by Druze fighters and state forces redeployed to the region where more than 900 people have been killed in sectarian violence.
ADVERTISEMENT Druze fighters had pushed out rival armed factions from the city on Saturday, a monitor said, after the government ordered a ceasefire following a US-brokered deal to avert further Israeli military intervention.
Sweida was "evacuated of all tribal fighters, and clashes within the city's neighbourhoods were halted", Syria's interior ministry spokesman Noureddine al-Baba said in a post on Telegram.
Israel had bombed government forces in both Sweida and Damascus earlier this week to force their withdrawal after they were accused of summary executions and other abuses against Druze civilians during their brief deployment in the southern province.More than 900 people have been killed in Sweida since last Sunday as sectarian clashes between the Druze and Bedouin drew in the Islamist-led government, Israel and armed tribes from other parts of Syria.Earlier Saturday, an AFP correspondent saw dozens of torched homes and vehicles and armed men setting fire to shops after looting them.
ADVERTISEMENT But in the evening, Bassem Fakhr, spokesman for the Men of Dignity, one of the two largest Druze armed groups, told AFP there was "no Bedouin presence in the city".The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor also said "tribal fighters withdrew from Sweida city on Saturday evening" after Druze fighters launched a large-scale attack.
ADVERTISEMENT Fighting nonetheless persisted in other parts of Sweida province, even as the Druze regained control of their city following days of fierce battle with armed Bedouin supported by tribal gunmen from other parts of Syria.

US pointman on Syria Tom Barrack said interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "have agreed to a ceasefire" negotiated by the United States.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later called on the Syrian government's security forces to prevent jihadists from entering and "carrying out massacres", in a post on X.
ADVERTISEMENT He also urged the Syrian government to "hold accountable and bring to justice anyone guilty of atrocities including those in their own ranks".Barrack, who is the US ambassador to Ankara, said the deal had the backing of Turkey, a key supporter of Sharaa, as well as neighbouring Jordan."We call upon Druze, Bedouins and Sunnis to put down their weapons and together with other minorities build a new and united Syrian identity in peace and prosperity with its neighbours," he wrote on X.Barrack later held a meeting in Amman with the Syrian and Jordanian top diplomats, during which they "agreed on practical steps to support Syria in implementing the agreement", the US envoy said in a later post on X.The US administration, which alongside Turkey and Saudi Arabia has forged ties with the Islamist president despite his past links with Al-Qaeda, was critical of its Israeli ally's recent air strikes on Syria and had sought a way out for Sharaa's government.Sharaa followed up on the US announcement with a televised speech in which he announced an immediate ceasefire in Sweida and renewed his pledge to protect Syria's ethnic and religious minorities."The Syrian state is committed to protecting all minorities and communities in the country... We condemn all crimes committed" in Sweida, he said. The president paid tribute to the "important role played by the United States, which again showed its support for Syria in these difficult circumstances and its concern for the country's stability".But Israel expressed deep scepticism about Sharaa's renewed pledge to protect minorities, pointing to deadly violence against Alawites as well as Druze since he led the overthrow of longtime leader Bashar al-Assad in December.In Sharaa's Syria "it is very dangerous to be a member of a minority -- Kurd, Druze, Alawite or Christian", Foreign Minister Gideon Saar posted on X.The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said at least 940 people had been killed in the violence since Sunday.They included 326 Druze fighters and 262 Druze civilians, 165 of whom were summarily executed, according to the Observatory.They also included 312 government security personnel and 21 Sunni Bedouin, three of them civilians who were "summarily executed by Druze fighters".Another 15 government troops were killed in Israeli strikes, the Observatory said.Syria's Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa on Saturday evening said that after the first phase of the ceasefire, which began on Saturday and involved the deployment of security forces to the province, a second phase would see the opening of humanitarian corridors.
According to the United Nations, the fighting has displaced least 87,000 people.

The agency has already arrested several individuals in connection with the case, including former IAS officer Anil Tuteja and former Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma. Congress leaders have dismissed the charges as part of a broader campaign to dismantle the party's leadership in the state and divert attention from resource exploitation issues. For weeks, Russia has been attacking Ukraine with hundreds of drones and missiles on a near-daily basis. It has ramped up attacks consistently and mounted the largest barrage with 741 drones and missiles on the night of July 8-9. Russia is actively expanding its drone production capacity and could soon attack Ukraine with up to 2,000 drones at once, according to Major General Christian Freuding, the head of the Situation Center for Ukraine at Germany's Ministry of Defense. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In an interview with the German military's 'Nachgefragt' programme, Freuding said that such mass deployment of drones could present a major challenge for Ukraine's air defence systems, which are not optimised for intercepting large volumes of low-cost drones simultaneously, according to a translation of his remarks. From a high of around 500 drones and missiles on Ukraine in overnight attacks, Russia went to raining more than 700 drones and missiles in a matter of mere weeks, suggesting it has huge stockpile, well-oiled production capacity, and smooth supply chains. Russia is not alone in its war efforts. China has not just kept the Russian economy afloat by making up for the loss of trade after the invasion of Ukraine but has also provided Russia with drones, machinery to make weapons, and dual-use goods used to make weapons. Iran has provided Russia with several thousands of drones and has also transferred the production know-how. Russia is playing low cost-high effect game against Ukraine Freuding flagged that the cost of launching these attacks is much less for Russia than the cost of tackling these attacks for Ukraine and its partners. While an Iranian-origin Shahed drone costs €30,000 and €50,000, one Patriot interceptor missiles costs more than €5 million, according to Freuding. The US-origin Patriot missile is the mainstay of Ukrainian air defence against Russian missiles and some high-end drones. Due to costs, Ukraine uses conventional anti-aircraft guns, interceptor drones, and electronic warfare to take down drones and reserves Patriot interceptors for largely taking down Russian missiles. Freuding said that Ukraine needs cost-effective air-defence systems, ideally in the €2,000–€4,000 range per interception. The development of such systems is essential to respond effectively to large-scale Russian drone attacks, said Freuding. 'Russia is trying to exhaust Ukraine's air defence supplies' With such continuous attacks, Russia is trying to exhaust Ukraine's air defence supplies, according to Michael Kofman, an analyst focussed on the Russian war on Ukraine, who serves at a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. 'They [Russians] target population centres because they're trying to exhaust Ukrainian air defence, and they know Ukrainian air defence will prioritise defending the cities and critical infrastructure,' Kofman told The Telegraph earlier this month. BRS to begin its preparedness for local bodies' polls with constituency-level meetings
HYDERABAD The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has decided to hold constituency-level meetings for key workers this week as part of preparing the party for the forthcoming local bodies' elections. Working president K.T. Rama Rao said the meetings are aimed at exposing the betrayal of the Congress government over the last 20 months. Asking the party leaders to focus on the Congress government's failures, including betrayals against farmers and other sections of the society, he said the meetings must discuss collapse of governance due to the incompetence of the Revanth Reddy-led government. He told the party ranks to prepare for local bodies' elections, likely to be held soon in the light of court orders, rigorously. He tasked the district presidents of the party with coordinating the meetings in every constituency. The meetings would see participation of the party sitting and former MLAs, MLCs, MPs, ZP Chairpersons, former corporation chairpersons, and senior State committee members. He wanted the meeting to highlight the government's neglect of farmers, including the non-implementation of the Rythu Bandhu/Bharosa scheme and its failure to address shortage of urea and seed. He criticized the government's inaction on irrigation and power supply issues, affecting farmers over the past 20 months. Asking the party ranks to educate/inform people about the Congress government's lack of sincerity in implementing the promised 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) and its deceptive attempts to push it with the help of an ordinance and also on the promise to enhance social security pension amount to various categories of beneficiaries. He also told party workers to remind people about the BRS' sustained public agitations and protests on the unkept promises over the past 20 months.
