Maharashtra govt to launch app-based transport service

Time of India6 days ago
The Maharashtra state government is currently evaluating the potential implementation of an app-based passenger vehicle service aimed at generating
employment opportunities
for the youth of Maharashtra.
According to an official release, "the app-based rickshaw, taxi, and e-bike services for passenger
transport
will now not be limited to private companies. It is proposed to give one of the names, such as 'Jai Maharashtra', '
Maha-Ride
', 'Maha-Yatri', or 'Maha-Go', to this app, which will be launched in collaboration with the
Transport Department
."
This information was given by Transport Minister
Pratap Sarnaik
. With the final approval of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and both Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, he expressed confidence that the said government app will be operational soon.
Minister
Sarnaik
said that "discussions have been started" with private companies, including '
Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology
' and 'Mitra', to develop the app under this initiative. It includes all the necessary elements to maintain transparency in the system, and the app will be ready soon.
Through this, special financial support will be provided to Marathi youth. To provide employment to unemployed youth, a loan will be offered at an interest rate of 10 per cent through Mumbai Bank for the purchase of vehicles, as per the release.
This was assured by Mumbai Bank Chairman Praveen Darekar. He stated that, with the assistance of Mumbai Bank, financial support will be available to unemployed youth. Additionally, an 11 per cent interest refund will be provided in the form of a subsidy by Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation, Bhatke Vimukta Corporation, OBC Corporation, and MSDC. Therefore, this loan is interest-free, as per the release.
Minister Sarnaik further stated that the regulations for this app are in the final stage, as per the Aggregator Guidelines of the Central Government. "Currently, private organisations are making huge profits through unauthorised apps. For this, those companies are looting drivers and passengers. Since the government has ample machinery, technology, and manpower, if it develops such an app, it will benefit not only the passengers but also the drivers."
In this regard, a meeting has been organised by the concerned parties at the Ministry on August 5. MLA Praveen Darekar, a technician involved in app creation, and government officials will be present at this meeting, where the government app will receive its final form, the release stated.

Maharashtra labour & industry dept goes AI: Rs4.95cr approved to build ‘super portal' by September

Nagpur: The state govt has cleared a Rs4.95 crore proposal to build a comprehensive digital platform for its Industry, Energy, Labour and Mining (IELM) Department, integrating everything from public services and internal portals to real-time dashboards and multilingual AI chatbots. A govt resolution issued recently grants administrative and financial approval for the ambitious e-governance project, which is to be implemented through the National Informatics Centre Services Inc (NICSI). The project has a strict deadline and must go live by September 30, 2025. The unified platform will consolidate multiple portals and services under one roof, including the Labour Commissionerate, Mathadi and Security Guard Boards, and internal systems such as LMS, DISH, BMMS, IWBMS, Cess, RPL, and others. New Delhi-based UNEECOPS Technologies Ltd has been empanelled for design, development, and maintenance of the proposed portal. Among the highlights is a full-fledged AI-powered chatbot, built using natural language processing (NLP), that will operate on the website as well as WhatsApp. The bot will be voice-enabled and offer services in both Marathi and English. It will be capable of answering citizen queries, assisting with applications, providing scheme information, helping with document submission, and even tracking service status. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 22 Illustrations of a Husband and Wife in Everyday Life Watch More Undo The same chatbot will also offer personalised assistance based on Aadhar number or mobile-based identification. A WhatsApp Business API chatbot will also be deployed for grievance redressal, scheme promotion, and document-based services. Users will be able to lodge complaints, track tickets, and even receive multimedia communication like scheme brochures and alerts via WhatsApp. The department will also develop an interactive GIS-based platform, where key labour facilities such as worker facilitation centres will be geo-tagged and searchable by district or location. A real-time integrated dashboard will be built to monitor scheme KPIs, data across sectors, and the status of departmental services. The dashboard will support role-based access and draw data from various internal systems via APIs. The platform will be cloud-hosted, secured with extended-validation SSL/TLS certificates, and will undergo mandatory security audits as per GoI norms. All pages will be mobile responsive and accessible to visually impaired users. In addition, a new mobile app will be developed with all the website's features, real-time content sync, interactive UI, and feedback mechanisms. The app will be freely downloadable on Android and iOS platforms at no cost to users. The GR notes that all expenses will be booked under the 2025–26 budget head for the e-governance project. A dedicated manpower resource will be stationed on-site at Mantralaya for the next three years to oversee maintenance and content operations.

Minister orders passenger bays under Metro 4 stations after staircase safety lapse

Thane: Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Monday instructed MMRDA officials to develop passenger bays and transport hubs beneath the elevated Metro Line 4 stations along Ghodbunder Highway. The development came after Sarnaik pointed out how the staircases of the eight elevated metro stations on the route were descending directly in the middle of the widened highway following a TOI report in May. We highlighted the situation where a possible coordination failure between two MMRDA departments led the Metro 4 route team to construct the stairways landing on the same medians, which were scheduled for removal by another team working on highway expansion leading to potential wastage of public money and delayed schedules in addition to posing risks for metro passengers. Later, the Thane UBT also wrote to the metropolitan commissioner. Meanwhile, Sarnaik met MMRDA officials last month, following which a site visit was scheduled for Monday, where the minister instructed them to formulate a remedial plan. Sarnaik indirectly admitted the lapse, saying, "We are facing a technical situation. The staircases between Gaimukh and Kapurbawdi currently land in the stretch between the main road and service lanes, posing potential risks for passengers getting hit by passing highway traffic. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your donations can help this little boy see again clearly Donate For Health Donate Now Undo To fix this, I have directed reserving the service lane below each station as passenger bays and hubs for feeder buses, autos, and taxis." Sarnaik said the proposed modifications will be submitted to Shinde by month-end for approval. "No extra cost is expected as the existing contractor will handle the modifications. We aim to begin Metro 4 trial runs by early 2026," he added. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai

OpenAI Reportedly Planning Affordable 'Go' ChatGPT Plan Ahead of GPT-5 Launch

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, appears to be developing a new subscription tier aimed at users looking for a more affordable AI experience. The potential new offering, reportedly named 'Go', is expected to fall below the current Plus ($20/month) and Pro ($200/month) plans, making ChatGPT more accessible to a wider audience. The first hint of this new pricing option emerged from a user named Tibor Bhaho on X (formerly Twitter), who shared a screenshot suggesting internal references to the 'Go' tier in the ChatGPT web app's source code. While OpenAI hasn't officially confirmed its plans, the timing coincides with rising anticipation surrounding the upcoming release of GPT-5. Currently, ChatGPT offers a free tier, the Plus plan, which provides access to advanced models like GPT-4-turbo, and the Pro plan designed for developers and power users. If the Go tier comes to market, it could fill a key middle ground — offering more functionality than the free version while being lighter on the wallet compared to existing paid options. What features the Go plan might include remains unclear. Industry observers speculate that it could provide access to simplified or smaller model variants such as o3 or o4-mini-high, potentially excluding high-end tools like OpenAI's agent features or the video generation tool Sora. In this way, OpenAI may strike a balance between affordability and capability, catering to casual users without overwhelming infrastructure or licensing costs. Beyond pricing changes, OpenAI seems to be quietly experimenting with new interface features as well. Some users have noticed additions like a 'Favourites' tab and a 'Pin chat' option, which could help users manage and retrieve past conversations more easily. These features, however, appear to be part of limited testing and have not been rolled out broadly. Meanwhile, excitement around GPT-5 continues to build. OpenAI has been working on the next-generation AI model for months, though its release timeline has reportedly been delayed several times due to internal safety reviews and performance evaluations. Speaking recently on a podcast with comedian Theo Von, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted that GPT-5 is nearing its debut. Sharing a personal moment with the model, Altman said, 'It was a weird feeling,' after GPT-5 answered a complex question faster and more accurately than he could. 'It responded instantly and correctly,' he added, noting how the interaction gave him a glimpse of the technology's potential. As competition in the AI space intensifies, OpenAI's rumored budget offering could be a strategic move to expand its user base and maintain relevance across diverse user segments. While code-level discoveries like this often point to features in development, there's always a chance plans could shift. Until OpenAI issues an official announcement, the details around the Go plan — including its launch date and exact capabilities — remain speculative.
